No offense, but this game is SLOW. If it takes me 1-2 minutes to go from NPC to NPC, then it's not worth getting through the story, no matter how good it is. I got bored after only a few minutes because most of that was spent walking. The good side of this game, is the story seems great, the graphics are nice, and the music is pleasant.
Also, I don't see how it fits the theme of the jam.
Ni Nate, Thanks for that feedback. Sorry about that, I agree it is quite slow we didn't have much time to balance the game unfortunately. It something that I will definitely update after the jam is finished. As for the theme, the goal set out by the narrator is to bring the three NPC's back together, to unite. During the game, the NPC's ask you to complete a bunch of tasks, which if you fail, will actually bring the NPC's together, meaning you succeed.
wait how did u submit it 3 days ago when they were due last week? lol
Yeah, had a number of bugs that we had to fix and Jonas was kind enough to let us submit late.
oh that's nice
Yo!
I have to admit, this is the first time I had to do this, but I ran a Cheat Engine program over your game to speed it up. Could not bear with the slow walking speed, but I absolutely wanted to play the game!
(For reference: The game was sped up to about 5-10x the normal speed)
Anyway, here's my "sped up" experience:
The engine caused the character freeze on each dialogue to be on a 4 second timer instead of being during the whole talk, which meant that I could walk around while still listening to the NPCs talking. That felt great, as I could go exploring while they were still talking to me. (Could be a feature?)
Being the friendly neighbor that I am, I wanted to assure that everyone was having a great time!
So naturally, as soon as I heard the sentence "do not go near my garden" I was fire and flame to destroy it to the last crop.
Obviously, after hearing the dwarf-like lumberjack saying "do not go near my house with that fire", it was almost magical how fast my character moved towards his house.
And of course, after hearing that I am not allowed in any way to pick up a mushroom for the soup, I felt the primordial urge to collect every mushroom on the map.
To my regret, the speed-up came back to bite, cutting off the final scene mid-animation (as the animation was sped up too), immediately restarting the game without letting me listen to the end :(
But I digress.
Feedback:
The music is perfectly fitting, the art is amazing (I'm a fan of poly), the character animation is... non existent? But I understand that it''s really hard if you have to do it on scratch, I struggled a lot myself too... The other animations (cam, cinematics, etc) were on point!
The dialogues and humor were on point, the whole story was pretty cool too, I'm amazed at how big the game is (the world and interactions) in the short time frame that you had. It is big but it is not TOO big to get bored of it (except on normal speed, which I will get to now).
The speed:
Guys. I love your game, but if I hadn't sped it up, I would have closed it before even reaching the second NPC. Please consider speeding your game up. Making someone walk from A to B also means that besides those dialogues, the player does nothing other than walking.
Yes, I know that you put a sprint key in, no, it did not help my case at all: Sprints are cool in games where the sprint is limited, but if your character is slow and you can sprint indefinitely, you're basically forcing the player to press SHIFT during the whole session for no reason.
If I need half a minute / a minute to walk to each NPC and I have to do that multiple times, I am not going to have a great time. The same counts for the dialogues: I love listening to them, but please do not freeze my character, I get anxious if I have to listen to a dialogue and "not play the game" while someone talks for a minute on every dialogue. On a side note: The lumberjack sounded like a dwarf, but I liked it. I am however questioning the sexuality of the geologist, but I did understand from the game dialogues that he likes hard things.
tl;dr: Game is too slow, but it is hella fun! Thanks!
Holy, this is the longest feedback I've written here in.. ever. ahaha
Very impressed by the audio dialoge. And the low poly style looks great.
The character animations look a little blocky though.
But I think for now its really good
Good game! The visual style and music are perfectly matched. The dialogues are also well executed. Perhaps you can develop it even more. Good job :D
I would loved to have some subtitles, but otherwise it's a great game, the world is pretty big and detailed and interesting to explore, great job!
Really impressive and good looking game. The story was awesome especially due to the dialogues. It would've been nice to put a walking animation on the character. If you did all the 3d modeling in Blender, then you can also make some animations there. It's a bit annoying at first but definitely worth learning for the next game jam. Good job!
Fun story. Great dialogue.
Scope is probably a bit big. A smaller more compact island might've been easier to work with. Or at least increasing the movement speed.
Great work!!
Yeah super true. That's the main lessons we are taking away from this jam. We still had content to implement but had to cut it short. Thanks for playing :)
Cute game, I love low poly art. The dialogue was great and I think you have a good place to work off of if you wanted to make a fuller game. Check out my game if you can :) Good job!
Thanks, yeah have a bunch of stuff we wanted to do and the scope ended being big regardless. I've rated your game :)
I couldn't find which trees to burn.
Very relaxing and comfortable music! The dialogue was hilarious! The poem at the start, and the whole tone of the game is fantastic!
Low poly bush and ripped trousers.
Thanks for playing. We had loads of fun with the dialogue. If you go directly down from the lumberjacks house there should be a tight cluster of trees within view of the NPC. Otherwise you can actually burn the guys house!
Awesome game!! :3 voice and dialogue on spot haha the art too , but again the dialogue made the game for me :3 great job and game idea
Thank you so much. It was a lot of fun to make. We had to stop ourselves from laughing during the recording sessions :)
The voice work is fantastic, great dialogue. Really enjoyed the feel of this game. Player movement felt a little bit slow but it's not so bad in the world made here. Impressive work!
The granny is my new idol haha, the voice made me laugh alot x) But she kept telling me "The soup is not ready yet, come back later!". Maybe she was becoming senile xD Hilarious game, the one on this game jam that made me laugh the most haha, nice job :D
Thanks for playing. Not sure if you got stuck, but at that point you can go and talk to the geologist/grandson on the other island with the volcano. Glad we could make you laugh!
Hahahaha, great dialogue and music! Diggin the level layout and art too, well done. Just wish I could move a little faster (even with shift).
Thank you, we had a great artist and composer work on it! Sorry about the characters speed, it was a weird balance to get right. We ran out of time to get the animations done n the player so it really feels like the player is slow.
Nice game
Thanks!
best part of the game is the granny! some pretty funny shit right there!
Haha yeah she was great to voice. She's a character I'd love to revisit in another game.
Nice graphics, sounds and controlls. But i did talk to all three people and then was stuck and didn't know what to do next.
Sorry about that, we had a huge bug, but have fixed it now. There are plenty of funny moments if you'd like to play again :)
cool concept and great title right there body
Thanks!
