Great game always lovely to see a fellow GameMaker entry! Playstyle is great for these type of games shame I suck at them! Still managed to get to the dashing scorpion so I'll take it. I loved the little things like the particles and trails of rockets. Really added to the game feel! Keep it up :)

Would be great if you could check my game also <3

I wish I was a pro...

Solid love shown for the original Metroid, good stuff.
For me it was a bit too hard at the first mini-boss, I couldn't get back without losing a lot of health. Maybe an additional checkpoint could help?

Thank you for reviewing my game, I have come to your submission to return the favor.

It's nice to see a Game Maker entry. The game play feels excellent. It really does. I did find it difficult to jump over some spiked because of the low ceiling. The concept that you can fight the boss at any time but you must explore to get yourself ready is really good use of the jam theme. I dig the music and art too.

I see this is your first itch upload, so good job. Keep up the good work.

Hey, thank you for playing and leaving a review! This is the second ever game jam I've done and I'm still nailing down the format with the time constraints so I plan on doing more in the future. I left a pretty long reply with all the plans I have for the game in the comment below yours if you want to check them out the biggest thing is to make the game a bit easier and more forgiving since I decided to make it frustratingly difficult for some reason...

Love the metroidvania! I like that we both had the structure to start off at the final boss and work your way back from there, but took very different approaches.  My absolute 100% biggest addition I could ask for is controller support. The keyboard controls are terribly difficult to get used to. That being said, I beat it so it's not impossible!

Thank you so much for that video review. I love seeing you play it and give your thoughts in real time. It helps so much when I see people go in blind and how they learn the levels/design. I've been adding to the game post jam and some of the things I changed/added are:

  • Variable jump height
    • Makes dodging a lot easier and overall controls more snappy and responsive
  • Spike and level layout
    • All of the jumps are "possible" but some are super unforgiving with how pixel perfect you need to be
    • I made all of the jumps simple and easy but still able to fail if there's quite a bit of mess up
    • One spot in particular is the two flying manatee looking things (they were supposed to be hawks but I just stuck with the chunky bird look haha) that are in the thin part on the right of the tan level and you're supposed to shoot down at them in the air but alas, it's never explained that you can do that
  • Tutorial level
    • I had this planed for the Jam release but it was just out of my scope
    • It essentially explains the controls and mechanics at the beginning of the game so players will know they can shoot up and down without having to accidently figure it out.
  • Boss AI rework
    • The bosses are a bit ridiculous sometimes when their attack patterns go ham on you so I made a couple tweaks to make them more forgiving
    • I'm also adding a way to implement the dash and make it useful for the final boss fight. I'm playing around with I-frames that work with classic enemies but not with spikes so the platforming in the dash levels is still a challenge.
  • Controller support!!!
    • I realize the keyboard controls are super difficult to handle but I've never added controller support to a game before and just didn't have the time to figure it out during the jam period so I'll definitely flush it out for the full release
  • Options
    • Another thing that I ran out of time for
    • Looking to have the option to switch the controls around and sound/music volume control
  • Artwork
    • A lot of aesthetics were added to make the levels look more alive and alien since the levels looked kind of barren at the original release
    • I didn't realize the main character looked like a naked man until you mentioned it. I was laughing so hard when you said that! Its supposed to be an astronaut but I think a rework is needed for sure here.

Other than that, thank you so much for your video review and I'll take all of this into account when I release the full game! Also, I realized I wrote a lot here so I'm basically going to use this comment as my Dev notes...

Pretty cool that you went for a metroidvania! Controls feel nice and I like the graphics. Unfortunately I think the game is a little too difficult. Some of the enemy hitboxes are too big, and there are some parts where you have to make really precise jumps or have to take damage to proceed.

Developer

I definitely didn't explain the mechanics of the game too well. When my friends played it blindly they didn't know they could shoot up or when they're in the air they could shoot down so for the full release I plan on adding a pretty thorough tutorial. I also plan on flushing out the difficulty a bit more because like Vimlark said in his tips for game jams "make it easy." I went for the dark souls of MetroidVanias and it should've been toned down a little haha.

Man! Bold move to make a metroidvania for a jam! Always find them super impressive when done well because the increased difficulty in level/world design. This one did not disappoint! Really satisfying impact animation for the missiles too.
I think you and I both suffered from the same problem of thinking our game was too easy while developing it haha. It felt like you had to take damage from some of the ceiling enemies to get by them.  You also don't have a chance to kill them ahead of time because they are right above your head. Also the scorpion boss spawning adds could be toned down a bit. During one of my (failed) attempts at killing him he just about filled the room with little robots I couldn't kill fast enough!
Overall great submission to the jam. Well done!

Developer

Yeah I tried getting the game to a playable state to have some  of my friends play test it but it just wasn't ready in time. I kept playing it thinking "man this is pretty easy, maybe I'll up the difficulty a bit" only to see my friends play it and get destroyed on some of the levels. You're actually able to shoot upwards in the game to get those pesky ceiling enemies but I hadn't explained it at all and lot of people didn't know they could do that. I had a tutorial level planned out but alas, those deadlines really creep up on you huh?

For the bosses I really should've touched up on the difficulty, the scorpion boss goes zero to one hundred real fast if he decides do keep spawning in drones. Thank you for playing though! I think when I can update the game I'm going to smooth out the difficulty a bit and add a little tutorial section before you're thrown into the craziness of the game.

I couldnt jump from the start of the game and had no idea what to do.

Developer

Hmm, were the controls bugged in some way? You should have been able to jump with the Z key unless something went wrong when it compiled on your PC. It was made for windows so if you're on Mac or Linux it might not work correctly. Let me know if you figure something out.

Great game!

I would really like it if jumping can be use with the space bar also.

And what rafael_lopes8000 said also true..

Developer(+1)

Hey, thanks for the review! I really wanted to add controller support and especially some sort of option to switch the controls around but those dang deadlines come up so fast...

Submitted(+1)

That is a really good game, only problem for is that there were some parts where it looks like you have to get hit to proceed. Other than that it was really fun!

Developer

Yeah I might of made the game a bit too hard... I was able to get through the levels without getting hit but my girlfriend struggled a bit when playing through it and not dying. I guess Vimlark's advice about making your game easy makes sense since I literally played these levels hundreds of times and knew how to get through them. In future game jams I'll hold back on the spikes... but thanks for playing!

I think if it was a full release or something out of the jam it was good, for game jams you might want to create something that passes your idea, but not too hard. With so many games people probably won't finish the game. I didn't have time yesterday but today will try to finish it.

Really well done! One point off for using y (german layout has z and y switched) (nah, not really)

Very solid and polished !

Developer

Hey thanks for playing and leaving a comment! I saw my friends getting the jump and shoot controls mixed up when they were testing it so I wanted to add an option to switch them around but I literally made the title screen about an hour before the deadline haha.
