I'm a sucker for terminal games and it was a blast playing this one!
absolutely great work and I love the different themes conveying different terminal styles in other games.

Developer

Thank you very much for playing the game and leaving such kind feedback. The Themes are also one of my favourites features so I'm glad to have implemented them.

On the first play it was hard to learn the controls. But once I understand the core it was really fun!

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing and for sticking with it to learn the controls. I'm glad to hear you had fun with it!

This game is quite hard even on Easy, and I found myself dying before I had time to learn the controls. In game jams, players usually only spend a few minutes with each game, so they might not get the chance to settle in and understand the mechanics. A softer introduction or a short, safe space to practice would make it easier for new players to appreciate the game.

Even after I got the concept of handling fuel, repairs and securing the vessel, the game was really hard on easy mode! That being said, I like the game. I think it is good.

Developer

Thank you very much for playing my game and leaving your thoughts and I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it. The idea behind the difficulty was to make even the easiest difficulty have threats to properly prepare the player if they wanted to go all the way through, I can understand that this would in turn create a barrier for entry for new players especially those less proficient with typing. I agree that adding a practice mode of some kind could then alleviate the barrier for entry so thank you for the suggestion. Overall, thank you for taking the time to play and review RETERMINAL.

Exactly, a practice mode. I remember in the old console days, the basic difficulty would sometimes only let you access a small portion of the game and help you get familiar with it. A beginner level difficulty that is chill and let’s you experiment and maybe even gives you feedback and tips about the game would help casual players that were not expecting a game that expects both RTS skills and typing skills.

Cause this game has a bunch of components you need to manage smart and you easily run out of fuel or get overflown by waste when you get started even on EASY which makes it difficult to grasp at first when you also want to rank many games. <3 I do feel the whole RTS with CLI mix is cool and unique!

Oh boy where do i start…

Pros:

  • Itch page: This pages is super on theme fort the game and puts you right in it.
  • Gameplay: Oh boy, this gameplay is so fun, i honestly love it when people take these kind of risks and make games mostly aimed at developer/IT workers to play for fun.
  • Goal: The goal is very clear without having to read a whole lot of tutorial.
  • Navigation: ey you know what, F*ck that mouse, keyboard only gang rules!! So this navigation also absolutely rules!
  • Game Option method: The game options are done in the same way the game is played, which feels very nice.
  • Theme option: Adding an option of color to the game is very neat.
  • Sound design: Minimalistic, simplistic and perfect. less is more.
  • Less is more!!

Cons:

  • Too many pros: This game is too good and i cant write out all the pros as its simply too many.
  • Im tired boss…: Im very tired from participating in this game jam and would like to sleep, but this game has kept me from that for a good chunk of time, so yeah… stop that.

Alright jokes aside though:

  • Missing unix features: A very universal feature of a unix terminal is the arrow up feature where the already typed commands get pulled back in the text entry, this game is missing that.
  • QoL Text editing: I understand that this would have likely taken too much time, but the game is also missing some very crucial text editing features, like CTRL+Arrow(right|left) where it would move the cursor to… opens game again > types text > holds control and presses arrow key > HOLY SH*T!! nevermind i guess… lets add that to pros…
  • Pros outmatch cons: By way too much…

I honestly hope you win this, you deserve it and if you ever update this game, ill be watching!

Thank you very much for playing and for leaving such a detailed review. It truly warms my heart to hear about how much you enjoyed RETERMINAL and hearing your appreciation for the various features I added makes it feel all the more worthwhile to have added them. Can't believe I didn't think of unix memory, if I return to this project or tackle a similar project in the future I'll be certain to add such a feature. Overall, thank you for your kind words and support!
