Beautiful story. I've actually seen multiple Touhou fanarts about it too, but as a story it's a first for me, and hits really different.

Everything that makes up the game is excellently done too.

I've made a showcase of this Jam, and of course this game is in too, even though there's not much to do in a VN (only contains Act 1 so not like it's spoilers):

Everything in this was well made and put together excellently.  I'm a very stoic person (not trying to brag) and this...made me cry.  That demonstrates your powerful storytelling.

I hope the people who made this do work in the future, they could easily be professionals.

A very emotionally-heavy entry with a lot of heart. I always hurt to see characters grow old and die, but you made it work so well

I cried, and the game filled me with dread at the thought of growing old. This game is definitely succeeds in inducing intense emotions, which I assume was the intent, so great job.

As for the card "gimmick": to really tell whether it was effective or not, I'd have to visit an alternate reality in which I played the game without it, but I like to think that it made me more engaged in the story, especially early on. It certainly did not detract from my experience, and it was integrated in the story in a clever and emotionally impactful way.

Also, the scope of the game feels just right, and as an outsider to the development process, I can't think of anything to add or remove that'd improve the game. Not only that, but what's in the game is polished to the point where I could easily recommend it to people without the context of it being a jam game.

All in all, great game!

Ayy thanks for enjoying. yeah that was part of our intended feel we are trying to convey, which is also why I put those warnings up and not spoiling the ending. we placed a lot to attention to the overall presentation and try to polish every bit we can. Normally I like to polish the game until it feels really complete and solid.

When a game pushes a glorified version of its characters where they operate on pure, raw emotions, it usually is a hit or miss. This one's a hit in my book. If there's one thing I can say about this game, it's that it's... cohesive. The music, art, and writing play into each other very well. (SPOILERS) The premise that Marisa grows old and dies and Alice is sad about it isn't much on its own, but uh, you explored it to its fullest and managed to make this simplicity itself captivating. At least, that's how I feel.

Ayy, thanks. We tried to make the story that has a logical progression and character arc to complement why the ending happened. I will happily tell my writer about this.

I gave my thoughts on this before but hot damn

  • On-point atmosphere
  • Interesting mechanic woven deeply with the narrative
  • very gay

While last I saw it, it needed some editing I think it’s astounding that you wrote around a mechanic so well and still had time to polish the FEELS to boot. This might be the best game I’ve seen from this jam when it comes to incorporating its main mechanic in its story, great-ass job and keep the MariAli fans fed.

Developer

Ayy, thanks. Reasons why we were able to polish this further is because we had an extension and we only have one mechanic. The story is pretty much set and we do not need to add any new system of the game, so we use the time to enhance the experience. I will say the playtesters helped us a lot in terms of ironing out the bugs and writing errors, you included :) .

God damn it, the pretty screenshots tricked into believing it might not end like I was thinking it might. I read quite a few Marisa X Alice fan made mangas so you can guess why I'm saying this xD
Overall, I like the visual, relaxing music for most of it and lovely atmosphere. You guys made a pretty nice Jam game 😃👍

I'll be looking forward to other such projects 😊

Developer

hey, thanks for enjoying our game. There is a good reason why I don't want to reveal parts of the story. We did try to make sure the presentation is on point to what feelings we want to convey.

fantastic

i expected it to end on act one. it did not

whatever you have set up for the card game ai is perfect. it seems to get faster at matching over time as the two get to know eachother more with it being like 100% in the last two which is awesome (or im just lucky)

the font is great and there's the awesome 𝓉𝑒𝓍𝓉 𝑒𝒻𝒻𝑒𝒸𝓉𝓈 with cool colours which i never would have expected from a jam game

in the technical aspect this is the most functional unity visual novel i've seen. doesn't run poorly, buttons are good, font isn't arial

and of course the art and text is wonderful throughout
Developer

Ayy, thanks for enjoying the game. I did indeed go all my way to suppress the Unity feel of the game. The AI does not get better over time but it is not pure RNG and yes, act 4 is always a scripted 100% match.  Most of the time was spent building the VN engine in unity, although it is quite flexible now I would say,  but it is not without a lot of pain went into building our own systems.

reply your bug reports here:

report anything weird you see or writing errors.

(except that random "..." appearance cause I already knew that can I don't think it can be fixed)
