Well, a legit click-spamming game. Who'd have thought?

Liked basically everything. The character portraits and the cutscene backgrounds, like yo. And the electronic theme arranges, not expected but I like em.

And for the gameplay I started with the Jam version. Concept is very interesting. And then I tried the post-Jam version just now. Hakkero's control feels much better so props to you!

Hey look! I featured this game in my showcase video (you better at least watch your game's showcase to the end, because there's a reason I had to take two more days to publish):

This has got to be one of the most polished games I've seen in the jam, especially the UI, that is some AAA quality UI designs and animations there. The gameplay is simple but sometimes I find it hard to tell what is going on on screen, especially bullets just come from every direction and you are spam clicking to pray that hakkero  hits the bullet you want. Aside from that I do like the concept despite it could use some work.

Also the art and music speaks for itself. While I do not mind the mix of styles for the art, the music style is consistent and just really catchy in a good way. (Also first stage sounds very terraria like.) Please tell me where is the OST if you have released it somewhere.

Also one note, extra stage is a bit bugged at the moment and I do look forward to play it to the fullest. Your warnings can't stop me from experiencing pain.

Developer

Ayy, OST is going up probably same day as end of jam

About the extra stage bug, if you used the newest version that should, maybe, might be gone (I hope). If you found something new or different to the bug that keeps coming back in the comments below though lemme know

So much stuff coming together in this! Groovy music and beautiful portraits are probably the biggest highlights for me. Nothing really struck me as missing, and the genre combinations of visual novel and boss stages was a good choice.

Gameplay does feel a little unpolished (most of my time devolved into sitting in the corner and button mashing) but I really like the idea of deflecting projectiles from a narrow road while a boss flies around shooting bullets. I wish I had any clever suggestions.

This was fun! I just kinda spam my trigger buttons and move where i need to be, but it's really cool. The music absolutely slaps, my favorite is the first stage theme

also u should totally put the Hakkero art somewhere so i can reference it for fanart, jussayin

Developer

Thanks! I should probably ask the artist for Hakkero about that actually…

Making bullets disappear- ha! I love that trick. Kinda wish I had a wider range of movement to actually do some dodging but it all worked out. Portraits are hella kawaii.

It's fun and unique. I think Hakkero spasmed out a few times, but the game is forgiving enough (on Normal and Extra, at least) that it didn't bother me. Overall pleasant and with good music and visuals.

Also got affected by the Extra bug.

"Spam Clicking with Thought" is not something that I ever expected to work as a game mechanic, but it works really well here. Presentation was also top-notch.

likey

hitboxes were hard to figure out at first but pretty cool albeit a tiny bit cramped once i got it. hitting the boss has a rad effect but since their invincibility frames are so massive it kinda seems like it just happens randomly. i would say turn that down and bump up their hp so you gotta worry about hitting them
favorite part: you can whack away familiars and they stop shooting atcha

i am very good at sans-like things so i was doing great on kosuzu until she just decided to stop shooting and leave the screen at 1/3 hp

Developer

Very cool

About that last bit uhh I’ll put this in a readme when I have the time but try the oddly specific advice from the comment below and see if that works.

(It was a bug I knew and had fixed but only implemented for the main story bosses whoops)

the game seems to break when you continue (even on later playthroughs without closing the game) and the last pattern on the extra stage also broke? it's fixed with an alt-f4

Developer

Yooo damn, could you let me know what version (mac or windows) you were using and what happens when the game breaks?

Submitted(+1)

I'm using the Windows version but it's through WINE on Pop!_OS 20.10, so this might be on me if it's not reproducible on native Windows.

I reached the final heart on Extra, but the boss ran off-screen and bullets stopped appearing.

As far as regular story mode goes, I was in the first stage on Overdrive. I died, continued, and then noticed I wasn't doing any damage so I got killed again to see if going back to the menu fixed it. I was then stuck at the tutorial pattern without being able to deal damage until I Alt-F4ed.

Alright, thanks for letting me know. The first is an bug that I remembering happening on both the first stage boss and the extra stage boss but apparently only implemented the fix for with the latter. If you do want to play the extra boss some more, you’ll have to hang out on the lower half of the screen and wait for them to start coming towards you. Once you deal some damage to them after that they should travel to the right but not off screen. (Very odd and specific advice I know)

The other I’ll have to look into because I’ not entirely sure why that happens. Glad you found a way around it I’ll have to put some kind of warning about that in a readme file.
