Description
For this soundtrack, I came up with the game Nagisa: Princess of the Sea. I designed the OST around the concept that this game was a 2D, hand-animated JRPG, something in the style of "Sea of Stars" or "Super Mario RPG". I was heavily inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli as well while designing both the OST and the concept of the game itself. since I really wanted to capture the feeling of childlike wonder and terror that Miyazaki does so well.
The story of the game is that you play as Nagisa, the princess of the Sealight Kingdom who was taken in by the king when she plummeted into the ocean. The goal of the game is to save the sea from a spreading corruption that is infesting the various locations you travel through, while also trying to find the whereabouts of your missing mother. The game's OST is a blend of classical, ambient and electronic sounds, making what I believe is an eclectic group of sounds. I used FL Studio to produce the OST, which consists of seven songs. I like to believe that these songs make up the "demo" of the game, which reminds me of the hazy memories of playing demos on my PS3 but never actually buying them, causing their names to be forgotten.
Track one is the Title Theme, The Deep Awakens, which was meant to really hit the ocean theme on the head. I was inspired by the music of Breath of the Wild for this one, leading to the calming ambient theme that I ended up making. After that is Susanoo Town Square, which is named after the area that I consider the hub of the game. I mixed some classical instrumentation with a bit of a more modern sound, and I tried to max out the chill vibes with a simple bossa nova beat added in. If you head into the Royal Neptune Hall, Nagisa's home, you are greeted with Waltz of the Waves. This was definitely the most Ghibli-inspired song, with some classical Japanese instruments included as well. My inclusion to add more eastern inspired instrumentation was due to the outfit the girl was wearing on the picture theme.
Heading into the first unsafe area in the game, you hear the titular Forbidden Caves. My idea was for it to sound a little foreboding, but still very whimsical, my main inspiration being Waterfall from Undertale. Matching with that theme but upping up the foreboding elements is Battle in the Depths, the battle theme for the area. I leaned much more into the electronic, as this was essentially me trying my hand at the artcore genre in a way. Reaching the end of the Forbidden Caves you will find the Siren Maiden, a mermaid that has been corrupted that you need to save. She serves as the boss of the area, accompanied by the song The Siren's Call. Instantly when I began work on this theme, I landed on a kind of salsa-waltz combination, taking elements from both. This led to something both captivating and dangerous, perfect for a siren. Finally, after the grueling battle you reach a Save Point, which plays the song Place of Zen. I imagine the place you go to save your progress is some kind of Zen garden with huge lotus flowers. Both this song and The Deep Awakens are in a pentatonic scale, and both have arpeggios that go along the whole scale. After that, the demo is completed, wrapping up the whole OST.
Message from the artist
This my first time doing anything of this nature, in both making an OST/album/EP and doing a game jam. It was definitely challenging but also super rewarding to pull this together. I'm really happy I got to be apart of this and here's hoping to joining back next time!
Also, credit goes to https://www.instagram.com/kawaakar._/ for the wonderful picture theme and cover art!
Theme
How does it fit the theme?
The OST for Nagisa is meant to invoke a feeling of being whisked off into another world, somewhere strange, whimsical and even somewhat unnerving underneath the sea. The instrumentation does its best to capture the aquatic ambience and the nostalgic feeling of childhood memory.

Super cool Ruby!!!
Susanoo Town Square and The Siren's Cal ...that bass notes...They really added a very interesting color.
Battle in the Depths, 0:53, what is that instrument?
You make quite unusual decisions in terms of composition and they really surprise. Awesome!!
Thanks for checking my submission out! Also, that instrument you're hearing in Battle in the Depths is a shamisen!
7 diverse and cool themes, with their own spirit, style, motive and mood... cool! Everything is worked out in detail and is perfect as a soundtrack for games! Battle in the Depths is my favorite because... he's cool)
Thanks!
Good job making 7 distinct tracks for your OST!
There were some mixing issues in forbidden caves with the super high reverb on the bells causing the song to feel really muddied. probably reducing the reverb and maybe the panning back and forth of it would help a lot!
Nice job making 7 tracks, each with their own distinct identity!
My favorite was "Battle in the Depths", I think some more syncopation in the non-percussive instruments would make it drive more. I also enjoyed the interesting progression in "Waltz of the Waves". Great work!
What really stood out to me was how this was such a fun orchestral soundtrack that incorporated a lot more diverse percussion aspects, especially like battle in the depths! Every song felt really interesting, I do wish you had a bit louder and thicker instrumentation so that all your ideas properly come through, using more of the strings range could have helped do that. But overall i really liked it!
I really like the chord production in Waltz of the Waves, it feels super unique and reminds me a bit of the Wonder Egg Priority Soundtrack. Battle in the Depths was cool, I feel like the glitchy percussion didn't sit perfectly in the mix compared to the other sounds tho, this could maybe be fixed with a reverb bus to blend the elements together or making the glitchy percussion a little less mono sounding with some panning and more effects. I also felt the percussion, the clave in particular, in Siren's Call could be turned down a little (this is very nitpicky).
Regardless this is still a great OST with solid composition all around and I really enjoyed listening to it! Great work!
(after writing this I just saw that this is your first time doing something like this and that makes this even more impressive!)
I'll have to check out the Wonder Egg Priority soundtrack at some point (and the anime too, that one has been on the backburner for a while lol)
And yeah mixing is one of my weaker points, so I plan on improving that. I knew that clave was way too loud but the time I realized it it was too late haha
Thanks for your feedback!
This soundtrack is very pleasant to listen to! Your tracks are all really consistent in terms of maintaining the overall mood/feel. You had some really great ideas throughout all your tracks and I think if you expanded on them a bit more it would really take your soundtrack to the next level. This was a great listen, nice job!
The title theme is reaaally nice. Love the vibe, the feeling, it's simple but great.
The overall style and vibe are really cool, I love it!
Now for the more negative points, which I mean as ways to improve of course : First, you seem to often rely on very short loops and ostinati. My advice is, if you're going to create OSTs for a video game, ask yourself if you could hear it looping for like 3 hours straight lol. Of course it's very hard, but maybe you should make longer loops on the same idea or write loops that chain to one another with a lot of variation! The idea is just to break the flow of the loop from time to time.
On the same note, some Pan uses are very flashy, like the percussions in The Siren's Call which sounds cool but again I think it's tiring on the long run.
Overall it's still a cool submission with a defined style and it works quite well, I'm mainly focusing on detail thingies. Good job!
Thanks for the feedback and criticism! This is the first time I've been through the process of making an OST, but I really enjoyed it and it might be a career path I might possibly head down. So I really appreciate your thoughts and take them into consideration for my next project. Even if what you said are more down in the details, the slightest change can make a big difference. Again, thanks for giving great constructive criticism!
Well done, great job!
Another gem that is lacking ratings >:(
I love the theme of this soundtrack so much, every song flows well together & 100% would fit in a game.
My personal favorite is Waltz of the Waves. That one can be thrown nicely into a relaxing playlist
Honestly I didn't expect these many ratings since this is my first jam, so the feedback I've gotten has been more then enough haha
But thank you, I appreciate your thoughts! Your submission was great as well!
Absolutely nailed the theme! I love the composition and melodies. Very pleasant atmosphere. Great work!
Super consistent, I wish it was a bit louder, but it's super good really enjoyed it! You got so much done in so few days, utterly impressive! Love Waltz of the Waves, asian instruments over the more western waltz aesthetic works really nicely!
I really appreciate the feedback! Mixing is one of my weaker points so that's definitely something I'll keep that in mind! And definitely my sound selection is something im super proud of
I hear you I got the exact same problem, and spotting the problem and fixing it is DEFINITELY not the same thing ahahah
Well you nailed the "asian" like type of composition , its well coherent in general. I would say sometimes the mix on the drums is very well made but all the melodic elements are getting overwhelmed a part from that its pretty nice :) good job
I really like how consistent the instrumentation and composition is in all of these. The only track that ventures a beyond the core sound is Forbidden Caves, which fits right in with the 'forbidden' aspect and intentionally throws a curveball tonally. Each track stays in its' respective lane and fits right into the appropriate sections of the game. Great work!
Also, shout-out using GR6 for the Pro Filter - I thought I was alone in that, haha.
