Being someone who plays chess this game caught my eye.
The concept of the was amazing and so were the visuals. Kept me busy for quite a while!!
Loved the game I can see the hardwork and the harmony with which you and your team created this game.
Well played!!
Good luck for the jam I hope you like other games in the jam too!!

I like how polished this is. Very nice music that fits the tone well.

It would be cool if you had feedback on the buttons in the start menu, even if it’s simply a two frame “pushed” animation that transitions to the main game scene upon release.

Ya it was a 3 day Jam so we did not think that was important. And thanks I am glad you loved the game. I might try to develop this game furthur I will surely add this small finishes and that will make the game much better

Nice and straightforward game, with a good amount of polish. It doesn't follow the optional theme; though, which is a little suprising, considering that the chess board is an abstract design that can take on any sort of theme... But that isn't a factor in rating, so no worries.

That being said, the game has a major strategy that is (mostly) guaranteed to give you the upper hand (see below - SPOILERS - if you're stuck). Had this game featured all the pieces, instead of just the pawn, and have them arranged in different ways, other than their original starting points, this game would become an interesting puzzle game, that uses chess rules to create such puzzles. Something like those chess "scenarios", but whoever takes the first piece wins the game.

Anyways, congrats on your submission, and cheers!

(Bizim takımdan da selamlar ve saygılar bu arada. Elinize sağlık! ;))

Strategy (SPOILERS! You've been warned!):

The best strategy is to advance *one* pawn as far as it goes - column C or F is your best bet - and only after it reached its maximum safe distance, advance the pawn that is located at the 3rd left (or right) column from the original column (leaving 2 columns of space in between lanes) as far as it safely goes. That way, you'll end up blocking 6 lanes with your 2 pawns, whilst AI might end up wasting its pawn's moves on advancing on you, and even letting you block its pawns before they even move. Once you got the upper hand like this, all you need to do is find the AI's one pawn that has the longest safe path, and shorten its distance, by moving the pawn at the column *next* to it.

So far, this strategy consistently defeats even the Hard AI.

I really loved the concept but executing a full chess AI for all peices would not have been feasible in 3 days probably.  I am glad you love the game

Submitted(+1)

Yeah, probably not for the Jam, but if you guys want to develop it further, there is some potential... :)

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Ya for sure we would love to when we have some time

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

I get it, time is limited in the jam. I do agree with him though. Rebrand from “Pawn” Battle and add the other pieces in, then create multiple levels with hand-crafted scenarios and you’ve got a really fun puzzle game. Great job!

Developer(+2)

Yes that sounds gr8 and makes a good game

Developer(+1)

Thank you! After I finished the gameplay and AI, I was told that there was a way to win the game without giving a chance to AI. I would need to change the whole game's idea to avoid this situation, so I decided to keep this as a single puzzle game.

I don't know if you've heard if, but I'm the developer of Pawn of the Dead, which has randomized chess puzzles with all pieces. It doesn't have a "single hit" mechanic, though.

(Kudos to your team, too)

I'll give that game a go. Cheers!

The game is fun and simple concept. I do wish to see more theme regarding to seaside. Anyway, great team work!

Developer

Ya we could have changed the pawns into crabs and the board in a sea shore or something. I am glad you loved the game

Developer

Thanks! And you are right, I wish the game was related with seadside.

Submitted

Interesting use of limitation. I wonder what type of A.I algorithm you guys used for the opponent.

One thing that would've been cooler is if you guys change the chess pieces into a 'seaside' theme like the pawns could be a bunch of crabs or something, y'know. Anyways, loved the concept for sure. Well done guys!

Developer

Wow that's a cool idea we could have done that and thanks for playing

A bit easy and straightforward, but interesting concept!

Yes it was a little too straight but thanks for playing and I hope you liked it
