the 2D world wrapped in a 3D cylindrical tower is cool; it reminds me of the 2D sections in Mario Odyssey. the artwork and spritework is really nice, and the game overall is aesthetically pleasing. i'd recommend adding stuff to the background, though, apart from just a blank green field. for example, you could have trees in the background that slowly rotate along with the player, further selling the cylindrical illusion.
i also think the level design is a little lacking in creativity, featuring mostly long-winding corridors and such, making the game feel more-or-less like a glorified maze. still, good job on your first GWJ submission! consider trying my game as well!
Nice art and soundtrack
Having a circular level is an interesting idea
This game is so cool! I loved the cylinder-like view, it was such a wow-moment when I started playing and saw it! Loved the art too!
thanks a lot for such a lovely feedback! :)
Awesome work! I love the aesthetic. Mapping the 2D game around a 3D tower is pretty genius. The game controls well, with a good jump arc and decent hit detection. The tower stage has good flow, and descending the tower instead of climbing it is a nice change of pace. :D Only had two teeny tiny little bits of feedback:
- Getting hit by enemies wasn't always clear. Wasn't always aware that I'd gotten hit until the game restarted.
- Coins would pass right through the character's head, though it looked like they should've been collected without having to jump for them.
Thanks for the feedback! It was very useful. :)
Fun little game! I loved the 3D illusion with the cylindrical view. The art and controls are great as well. The only thing I’d wish for is more sound effects. But overall, it's impressive considering the time constraints
Thanks for the comment! We are starting to mess around with sound design, and we had few things on our to-do list for this gane that we left out because of time. Definitely something we want to improve on our next game!
WOAH that was cool! I really liked the visuals of this game!
Thank you ! 😊
Never saw a platformer wrapped in a tower. Great idea! The art is neat.
I wish I was able to open the doors to go through :)
Beetles were hard, I would say. A few times they killed me, and I didn’t understood why. I was jumping on them at that moment.
The only problem I had was that I started to feel dizzy in the end. It’s super cool as an idea for a special challenge, but playing a longer game like this would be hard.
I must admit you were the first to call them beetles! hahaha I voted for an ant, my girlfriend is sure it's a spider, and my game jam partners called them cockroaches ! hahaha
Thanks a lot for your feedback!
That was extremely cool! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game exactly like this, with the 2d game on a 3d environment. Looking forward to digging through your repo to see how you accomplished that!
I would have loved to see some more mechanics, but totally understandable given the time limit. Great work, great art too!
I'm glad you enjoyed! Don't hesitate to message me if you need help understanding the code 😊
We made the game in 2D, with a fixed camera that gets the whole stage. Then we output this 2D to a texture using a Viewport node, and apply it (as a texture) to a cylinder mesh (the tower). It was a clever idea from @miphos !
That's how it looks:
Nice! Viewports are definitely something I haven’t touched (and probably should). Guess that’s my goal for next jam lol.
They are super useful! I edited my last comment with a image of our viewport if you want to take a look!
Nice idea! I wish you had more than one heart, though. It makes the game a little too frustrating for a jam entry. I find it confusing that you’ve added props like doors or chests to the environment, but you can’t interact with them.
Thank you Nubels! Those were all ideas we had in our to-do list but didn't finish in time! (having 3 hearts, opening doors and chests).
I really liked the way the tower rotates around! I reviewed your game on my live stream just now:
Thats cool! haha thanks a lot :)
This was such a cool idea and the controls felt great. i loved collecting the little fairies. I'm interested to look at the source code and see how you did this, great work!
Nice game! Unique idea for a platformer… and anything with ladders; those things always trip me up.
Thank you for your nice comment! We came up with ladders 3h before the release time hahaha
