Very interesting!

I think it stops going through the door, even with both of them at the exit at a certain level (which was pretty hard, actually), and it doesn't go any further. For now I assume that may be on purpose.

You did a really great job on this! I actually think this may be a bit on the challenging side actually. The mechanics worked very cleanly!

To make it easier for some players, perhaps an easy mode where if they cleared with one character, they don't have to repeat that character too if they fail with the other one, as it can be hard enough even with just clearing one for many players.

Developer

Yeah you're right it stops there I didn't do more levels and I forgot to loop it back to the menu or maybe give it a game ended screen.

Thanks for playing and for the feedback man!

Finn & The Kobold look absolutely amazing, I really loved the kobold actually lol its movement was very interesting and I had a much easier time as it. Finn however, I had some issues with. The double jump seems to be inconsistent, there were times when I would land on a platform and it wouldn't refund the double jump so I ended up falling back to the beginning of the level. I definitely liked the kobold mechanics though, very well done. It's funny though when I started I thought you had to use finn as a climbable thing for the kobold since I was struggling on a kobold jump. That was until I went flying straight through him and back to the beginning lol.

Developer(+1)

Hahaha yeah at one point I had considered something like that, or have them help each other somehow, I didn't manage it in the end, anyway thanks for playing and for the feedback

Hey, game idea is really awesome and although the artstyle looks a bit inconsistent (It's hard to do art when you're a programmer so completely understandable xD), overall the aesthetic is great.

I love how the player model is finn, great choice, and how each level is actually two levels in disguise. It's a great concept! As some others have said, maybe when one character dies, if  the other one didn't respawn as well that would feel a lot better.

The controls can be pretty finicky at times, but I struggled so much with making platformer controls as well that I'm beginning to think it's just how everyone's first few platformers turn out. I think the idea is great, but a few small bits of polish here and there and this would've been an amazing entry as well. Still, it's really solid work, and I think it deserves a good rating. Nice job!

Developer(+1)

Yeah I tried to find stuff that fit well enough together  since I really am not good at art in general(I've tried to do some stuff this days, and while I can it's not great),

Yeah I agree, once this is done I might tinker with this a bit more to make it feel right, just this week I learned so much more about platforming and game design in general(also a loooot of stuff was in but wasn't good enough so I ended up removing it and going with a simpler design)

Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

fin the human with no jake? how could you sir? :)) nice idea with two characters controls being different on them might be cool for a two player team!  if one i would have made a button to switch between characters.

Developer

Yeah a lot of people said the same so I'll add a switch button, also a checkpoint when you get to the door, I tried to have them for the jam but oh well..

Thanks for playing.

Pretty cool to have to characters with different movement mechanics tackling the same level, that was fairly unique. It would be nice if for single player you could press a button to switch which character you are controlling. Lack of coyote-time feels really punishing with the human character, it's really easy to have your first jump eaten so you don't clear a gap. I also wish it didn't reset the whole level when one character dies, and would just reset that character instead, but maybe that would make it too easy.

Over all I think the idea is really cool, but maybe some numbers could be tweaked to make the platforming a bit easier or more consistent. Nice work!

Developer

Yeah.. I've got a couple of things to fix once the jam is over, I'll add some more lvl and make the curve a bit easier, also a timer.

Thanks for playing and for the feedback.

I really like the concept, having the same space navigated it different ways.  I think having a toggle between characters would have been better, and sprinting didn't work on my Xbox one gamepad.  It was hard to see the kobold against the background and the sensitive controls made it bit more challenging but the clearly marked wall jump zones helped a ton.

Developer

Hey thanks for playing, I might have made some mistake while binding the controls I'll have to check.

Thanks for trying my game and for the feedback

Didn't like it at all.

The text on the main menu floats off the screen.

Kobold feels very hard to control. But it's fine. Double jumpy wouldn't have double jump if you jumped out of edge.

I don't know if there are more levels than 2, but I couldn't complete second one. Double jump just can't get to the finish. There's no way.

But other than that, the concept is good. Yet game needs quite a lot of polish. Wish you all the goods to make it a better game

Developer(+1)

Hey sorry to hear that, I have yet to see that happen to anyone else but thanks for telling me, and yeah I agree the kobold is hard to maneuver, but level 2 is definetly doable.

Thanks for playing and for the feedback

Submitted

Now, how is it doable? The height of the lower platforms is higher than double jump character can jump. Or was I missing something?

Developer(+1)

You gotta jump on the very first platform and press L to sprint while double jumping to get to the second platform

Submitted(+1)

Excuse me, you can sprint???

Oh now I see it. I missed the tip. It's kind of overlapping itself though, so maybe that was my confusion.

I updated my rating, now the fun is not 1 star :D

Developer(+1)

Hahaha thanks

lovely characters and background with moody music.

Controlling the little guy is very challenging to me.

Submitted(+1)

Not a bad platformer at all, though controlling the kobold sometimes made me wonder if I was playing a rage-game in disguise :P  A wonderful job for your first jam, well done!  I think it would have been better off having a toggle between the two characters rather than different control layouts, having to switch back and forth made it feel unintuitive to control either character.  All told still a fun experience, congratulations and thanks for the game!

Developer

Yeah I can see that most people agree on the little guy feeling too fast, and I do get it(I wasn't trying to make a rage game but... I get it)

That said thanks for playing

Excellent level design! The kobold was a little hard for me to control since its so ZIPPYFAST but I love the idea of one level being traversable by two different move sets in their own independent ways. This could really get punched up by having some interactions between the two characters where they need to work together i.e. kobold lifts a pressure plate to make a platform for the kid to double jump onto, etc.  Maybe make the kid a wall-jump-able surface for the kobold?  Oh and as you've already heard from others, love the music. (Are the kid sprites from LazyHamsters? If so they did ask to be credited if you use their art, you could just credit them on your itch page description)

Developer(+1)

Absolutely I forgot to give credit but intended to get back to it, yesterday I just scrambled together the page for submission

Thanks for the feedback some of that I had tried to or thought about, I was struggling to get everything feeling right so decided to make it easier and have more basic controls. I wanna try and revisit this in like a month and try to see if I'm able to improve this.

Thanks a lot for playing.

Submitted(+1)

Love the artwork and music! The controls are a bit unintuitive but the game handles decently when you get used to them.  Playing solo I do wish that one character falling off the stage would only reset that one character instead of both, especially if the other character already made it to the exit.  Pretty solid experience all around though

Developer

Yeah I had a checkpoint going at some point but then ran into problems and didn't manage to keep it in, I wanted to have it so that if you reached the door with one of the characters it would save the new position there, but oh well.

Thanks for playing and for the feedback.

Submitted(+1)

Knowing about the double jump mechanic you mentioned in the comments helped get me through the first level. The running animation, cute art and the sfx change between first and second jump was so cute, I just ran around jumping so I could hear it haha. Loved the music, would have been great to have it loop! A bit tricky level design to play single player for me, but great work!

Developer

Hey thanks for playing and the kind words, and yes now that you mention it I should totally have made the music loop didn't think about that.

Submitted(+1)

Great job!

The controls are a bit hard to understand, is it made for 2 people or 1 person to play?

Seems like theres a cool concept here with guiding the 2 characters across the level, but I could make it to the first door. :(

The level, sounds and music are great!

Developer

Hey, i tried to get the controls felling right the whole week but I'm honestly not that satisfied, I'm sorry to hear that you didn't manage to move to the next lvl but I'll admit I did make them kinda hard since there aren't many(also just noticed the lvl select doesn't work :( must have made some mistake)

Anyways thanks for playing and leaving a comment

Any tips for getting through that first level? Im stumped at how to get the boy up there, woudl like to see the other levels!

Developer (1 edit)

I think I got u, I didn't make it clear enough that the boy can double jump, while the little kobold can wall climb/ wall jump, look for where grass is, that's where you can usually go with the kid
