This was pretty cool! I definitely encountered a few issues though. One that was particularly interesting was that on the first level where you push a block around the character and block aren't locked on the Z plane so I ended up getting pushed off the front or back of the platforms quite a few times while trying to push it. XD

The double jump feels jarringly powerless compared to the normal jump, but I can see that the heights are pretty well tuned. Maybe a little less on the normal jump and a little more on the double jump to achieve the same overall height would have felt better.

Overall really nice work!

Developer

Excellent feedback! Thanks!

I decided to leave the z-plane accessible in order to raise the stakes and allow players to fall off the "front" of platforms when being hit by falling blocks... But maybe that wasn't necessary for the movable blocks. They are full physics bodies and the simulations are glitchy at times. If I had more time I would have implemented more hardcoded move logic, but I did this in a few days using the beta.

Every agrees with you on the double jump. I need play testers next time around!

thanks again!

The secret mechanics of shadow cloning is cool! ;) But seriously, the game is really unstable (but given the theme, this can not be considered a minus, lol). The first time I got stuck on the second level, and then game completely walled me up in the tutorial floor, because of which I had to restart the game. The second time something weird happened after that level and the game crashed altogether. In general, the feeling of chaos is conveyed well, and I also like the style

Developer

I wish I had deliberately made it so unstable! That would have actually been a really cool idea!

Missed opportunity!

Pretty fun! I really liked the Music and Sound Effects of your game. Something I found myself doing a lot was constantly jumping just because I liked the sound that went with it. The mechanics are pretty good for a platformer although I agree that the double-jump could be tweaked a bit.

I saw the comment saying that they encountered the phantom double-player bug. I don't know how I managed, but I was able to produce a triple-player bug while a fourth one was flying throughout the levels (I think exiting to the menu and re-entering the game might've had some influence to it).  Oddly enough I think that fourth pill finished the game for me because mid-way through one level the victory screen popped up for me. It was pretty quirky if I do say so myself.

Regardless, I enjoyed playing this! Nice work!

Developer

Thanks for the great feedback. That bug is soooo annoying! I don't understand why the level switcher is misbehaving so much 😳

What OS are you playing on btw? Wondering if that is making a difference to the bug surfacing

I played on the Windows version!

I dig the aesthetic of this game; it gives off a futuristic and interesting vibe especially with the colored lighting contrasting with the white blocks. I love it when the terrain does cool interactions (like the portal frame collapsing, or the unstable blocks rotating upon hitting other blocks). As for the platforming, the double jump feels a bit too weak to be sensible when it comes to gaining height, but I personally think it works alright when you need to adjust your trajectory mid-air.

Overall, I rate this a quirky/quirky game

Developer

That is brilliant feedback. Maybe I could open up that double-jump a bit more. Glad you enjoyed the little interactions. I had fun making the portal collapse :)

Really like the 2.5D style. Some of the jumps were a bit frustrating though. For instance hitting a block I wanted to get on top while in mid-air would cause me to lose all momentum then just fall straight down (event though I had enough height to be above the block). Maybe this is intended but I struggled with it.

Lighting effects and audio give it the quirky vibe you were going for!

Developer

Thanks. This is my first ever attempt at a platformer and I’ve implemented a few things that people recommend (coyote time, jump buffers, etc) but it’s still not as smooth as I’d like.

Really appreciate you taking time to play and review. Thanks!

I like the aesthetic of this game but it's very confusing. Why is there a duplicate of myself? Why do I randomly reset? How did I get stuck in a wall?

Developer

Oh no! You’ve encountered the phantom double-player bug 😔

I’m using Godot 4 and I can’t seem to track down why this bug occurs (it’s very rare and I can’t replicate it reliably)

Thanks for trying it all the same
