This game is SO COOL! I really just want to download it and play it in my free time.

As a PS1 graphics fan and a Hearthstone enjoyer this was right up my alley, one of my favorite games this jam. I beat the game and tried several different strategies. The change rotation direction spells were the most fun to play with, are a super unique idea, and are the highlight of the game for sure and I would suggest making them the strongest card instead of the worst card in terms of raw power and actually winning the game. In later levels you spam restart because it wouldn't send you to the beginning of the run and there is no mulligan button for the starting hand. If this is considered cheating, some may argue that waiting to randomly draw strong cards is intentional, I would counter that more than a significant number of starting hands and initial draw sequences guarantee a loss even with perfect strategy; there are also initial hands that immediately win you the round like with the steal and nuke cards; in those situations I would argue that the game crosses the line to an unhealthy degree of randomness. When selecting cards between levels you always select the steal card if it is offered. Steal card for some reason when used on a steal card results in the player getting the opponents steal card and their steal card disappears. Steal is super overpowered. Steal card will always get 2 card value or more due to the fact it destroys an opponents card and gives you additional card to play. Your second priority when selecting a card to take is the kill highest health enemy card as it is the same as steal but worse by 50% because you don't then get the minion or spell card to play yourself. In third priority, you should always select nuke as it is more board clear. The downside to nuke is damaging your own minions but the downside is offset by the fact you have more minions in your deck than your opponent and you can whittle them down with your last 1/1 minion. Lastly, you should select barrage as a second rate nuke. None of the other cards are worth taking. There's no point in taking buff cards if you have them in your deck already and they give u less value than playing a new minion and the enemy is going to have removal and high attack cards to counter any big minion you play. This game highly appeals to Hearthstone players but Hearthstone players internally know the mana values of the equivalent cards and will be aware of any balance issues.  Amazing game in four days regardless, just needs a few balance tweaks. I hope the unsolicited criticism comes off as constructive, as I cant understate how much fun I had playing. This might come off as nit-picking to a lot of people for a game jam game, just wanted to share my thoughts.

This is one of the game's developers and programmers speaking. First of all, thank you so much for playing our game! There are some unpleasant bugs, the UX isn’t fully polished, and there’s even some soft locking. We’re aware of all these issues and apologize for any frustrations you may have experienced. Secondly, I’m also a former Hearthstone player, so I completely understand what you’re talking about! Yes, the balance is off right now, some things are way too overpowered. But many of the ideas came from my experience playing Hearthstone and other card games. We’re planning to release a post-jam version where we’ll fix all the shortcomings, add an enemy turn (with somewhat decent AI), improve the UX, and introduce new cards. Thanks again for the feedback, comments like these only motivate us to keep going. We have plans for this game because we believe the concept has potential.

I'm super happy my comment came off positively. Great to hear that you are an experienced card game player as I think we both agree that balance is important in this genre. I also believe this game has tons of potential while also being fun in its current state. I will be following the development in the future for sure. Best of luck for this game going forward, I'm excited to see where it goes. I think there is a huge market for this game because of people like us who are former Hearthstone players that want to try something new in the genre.

Yeah, absolutely, Hearthstone in 2015-2018 was peak content, engagement, and balance. Back then, the game wasn’t overloaded with too many mechanics or cards, and card power levels were reasonable. So I agree. It’d be great to see more interesting card games that could match the depth and replayability of Hearthstone from those years. We’ll do our best not to abandon this project and to create something truly engaging.

You're absolutely right in my opinion about feature and power creep in Hearthstone. As someone who played extensively in 2016-2017 I would agree that they were the golden years. In regards to Like a Record, I think having a bunch of different viable strategies like flooding the board with minions or buffing one of the minions to be super big would be cool options. Having one super big minion made it so I was very concerned with the direction the board was spinning so that I could get it to hit my enemies biggest minion and dodge any steal cards. It really played into the game's theme. The AOE spells like nuke and barrage really subverted the theme in my opinion because it didn't matter how the record was spinning; maybe make them hit the side of the record that is facing the card. Maybe change how the -3 health card works so that you are really concerned with what card it lines up with, like if minions could block it and take the blow or if a spell card could reflect it. My favorite part of Hearthstone in those years was feeling like there were so many viable strategies that I could enjoy and experiment with that would have fighting chance against the most meta decks. There are so many cool and unique directions that Like a Record could go in. I had a lot of fun trying to figure out the best and viable unique strategies in Like a Record and I think the game should lean into the unique aspect of the spinning playing field. Maybe I would be as extreme to say that all the cards should be effected by the direction and how the two records face each other. I'm excited to see what you come up with and experiment with; the game is well put together and it seems like you're focused on having a really great design.

Took me a bit to get the hang of it, but the unique visual kept me playing until it clicked.

I really like it!! It's like inscryption but on a round board. Really creative use of the theme. Visuals are also quite polished!

Such a interesting concept for a card game. Visuals and audio feedback is great. You should really make this into a full game.

you didn't have to tell me to suck balls at the end and for that I'm giving you five big stars

Incredibly good art and one of the most fun game loops I've seen this jam. Could definitely see fleshed out into a whole thing. Bug is unfortunate.

Damn that bug, but I will at 100% try the fixed version. Do you want to add something or is this the complete game?

Submitted(+1)

okay not only is the artstyle banger but it delivers a creative and fun game mechanic that holds up really well??? hats off

Came here after seeing it on stream — the loop interpretation is honestly genius.
It’s not random at all if you really stop and think about it.
Loved the DJ record setup and the guy in the background — funny, smart, and super well made!

dang what a vibe, great job!

Wow it's super polished. And it got a cool style (love the guy on the cover, he wants to eat me), the music is super nice too, camera sequence and everything, it's really nice.
Honestly i have only one feedback. It's super difficult to read the cards when they are shaking. Maybe some kind of other feedback for selecting would work ?

Yoooo! This is excellent, I immediatly get inscryption vibes (and, in my eyes, that is very high praise). Amazing stuff.

I loved this vibe, it was super dark and surrealistic- and that song was so groovy!

Sick artstyle, athmosphere and implementation of the theme, very fun!!

Amazing game, a lot like inscryption. Loved the deck building and having to think ahead. Halfway through I got a unity error though.
