How does your game match the theme?
It's a pixelperfect gameboy game working to replicate hardware restrictions (f.e. only 3 layers, limited animation sprites) into a platformer. The space theme comes into scene with the world and narrative setting playing in outer space.

The art is stellar. I struggled with the movement, though. Only moving to the left/right while jumping wasn't intuitive when the character had a walking animation. The double jump helped me a lot. Overall, I say nice job!
Really nice work on the graphics, especially the title background! The palette chooser is a nice touch, but I always feel with palette choosers in games that it takes something away because palette is usually intentionally chosen by the artist, so having a random one takes away some of the soul of the art.
The movement and instant restart to the very beginning is fairly frustrating, and I was unable to beat the game because of this. Due to the full reset on death, I really didn’t like the blind jumps you had to make in some parts, even if it’s simple to make the landing. Just makes me feel like I have to memorize the level and moves, when the movement mechanic just feels tedious. That said, it did feel very old school because of that combination of mechanics haha
Overall though, very nice job, and nice on the Gameboy soul!
Hi there! I am one of the artists for Walter and we used a strawberry milk pallet from lospec. We did think that the shader would be a good touch some of it is readable some of it I found wasn’t. So we ended up grayscaling the images and going with the shader approach. I do have the originals if you’d like to see those I could put them in the gb jam discord. The level design it was my very first project for levels period! Lol you’re not alone there are others who didn’t like the blind jumps and it’s something I’ll be working on post game jam. Thank you for your response!
That was interesting and fun! The mechanics are quite unpolished, but I didn't find them frustrating.
I'm aware from other comments that the inability to move while grounded is a bug. And yet, it's kind of interesting? It's kind of like when people have to make those careful hops in low gravity. I found myself seeing how long I could maintain momentum before fully hitting the ground and stopping.
Question: I also noticed that I could jump slightly before hitting the ground, maintaining my momentum. Was this also a bug? It's a very interesting movement idea.
I'm not sure what the difficulty was supposed to be, but I found it fairly easy. I didn't even fall all the way into one of those pits of vines. [EDIT]: "Fairly easy" is a bad way to describe it. I did find the game challenging. Some of the jumps were tricky, and I had to react quickly to new obstacles. However, I thought it was a very fair challenge.
The art and music are very atmospheric. I especially like the menu art!
Great work!
I believe it’s because the collisions on the player touch the ground layer the actual constraints on the player and level aren’t touching at that point but they’re still interacting at some capacity. And thank you! We really appreciate the feed back!
nice cover art!
I liked it, maybe I was lucky but for a ragegame that felt easy
The soundtrack and the graphics are nice, the main menu is gorgeous
although getting momentum felt a bit inconsistent, probably bad timing on my part but I felt like all I had to do was spam jump, pretty fun game anyways :>
I like the art of the game, and the option to change color palettes is fantastic. The music/SFX are also well-made. Everything about these elements feels very GameBoy-ish, which I think is great!
The foundation for good platformer gameplay is here as well, but unfortunately it is held back by a pretty major bug - the player character is "sticky" and won't move left or right at all unless in the air, meaning you have to spam the jump button to make any forward progress. The game is still completable because you can be next to a wall without being on the ground to initiate a jump, but the process of finishing the game basically boils down to spamming jump while holding D.
If this was an intentional gameplay design decision, I do apologize for mistaking it as a bug. This gameplay element wasn't advertised on the game page, so I just assumed it was a bug.
I hope this doesn't sound harsh, as I do respect the effort you have put into the game and think it's a nice project, but I hope the criticism is helpful as you continue to develop your game-making skills. We're right there with you - our game certainly ended up with a few problems too, lol
For a first-time GameJam project, this is good! I hope it has been a great learning experience for you and your team.
yes it actually is a bug, and thank you for your very detailed review. It is our first game jam or for some of us it is. And the coders both work, volunteer and go to school it was very time consuming on them but they did a very good job considering their time.
You're welcome, I'm happy to offer helpful feedback where I can! I wish you and your team well as you continue your game development journey.
Basically a Getting Over it. I like it a lot!
Sadly I'm too clumsy for platformers...
and that’s ok! I’m glad you enjoyed it and gave us a rating!
Getting over it with WALTER
Good game with great audiovisual presentation. The gameplay concept is really unique and oddly addictive, like others before me have said you might have a killer gameplay concept in your hands that you could do more with.
It's only really marred by a few flaws. Sometimes you can't see below you, and that ends up leading to trial and error gameplay. I didn't know that I could jump on walls until I spammed up trying to not fall off a ledge, i just assumed that the "reset" option was for situations where you find yourself trapped between/before walls.
Good job, guys!
yes, the movement to jump is a bug and interestingly enough so is the wall climb and that’s my fault I added the level in using super tiled to unity and built it in just 2 layers one being the background and then the level in the foreground. The jump code was applied to the ground layer in unity and I labeled the whole level as ground so the colliders were all ground therefore giving wall jump as bob ross would say a happy little accident. And thank you sm for your extended review !
The sense of momentum and weight your character has is really interesting, and makes it feel distinct from any other platformer I've played. The level could be frustrating at times and I had to take a few leaps of faith without being able to see what was in front of me, but overall quite cool
Not a bad concept but I think it may be bugged? There was no way to move left or right without first jumping and holding left or right.
The tile screen is fantastic.
Neat game, the title screen is beautiful. I did find the fastest way to traverse the level was by spamming jump and moving non stop.
Good job. I really like the graphics and sound-design. Cool to let us choose a colour-scheme.
The gameplay wasn't for me. I think it's an interesting concept, but the movement feels very stiff and the momentum unpredictable. I ended up spamming jump like a maniac, and that did kind of work, to get through the level.
With polished gameplay, this could be a lot of fun. Keep at it.
This is also my first game jam! I gotta say, those graphics are great and that background music slaps. Great job!
It's an interesting concept, but I find it's very difficult for me to build up moment. It sort of feels like I end up just spamming jump on walls to keep moving.
Though, I think you could definitely develop on the concept. Because it is incredibly unique. Maybe some more midair movement and control might really help smooth it over.
Goodluck on the jam. Also I really liked the main menu screen. Great atmosphere.
