This looks and sounds fantastic but is quite buggy.
You get elixers with the first time interacting with the green orb, subsequent times they are removed from your inventory.

elixer's description says it will revive, but you can't use it on dead people.

interacting with green orb says it restores helpers but it does not.

It feels like it is really close to something cool and fun, but when two of your helpers are killed in the first battle before they have a chance to do anything, that is immediately lost.

Not sure how/if it incorporates the theme, but was not able to get far enough to really evaluate that.

Developer

Thank you for trying this game! Extreme rushing for the deadline has made this game full of bugs, I'm sorry. 😅

Updated version with bugfixes and new contents will be coming after the voting period!

I smashed the beast.

The texture and music create an interesting atmosphere of sad desolation.

RPG systems without traditional HPs are difficult to build but they are intriguing and a small jam game seems the right place to try to use one, especially when it can fit the theme like you did.

Thanks for sharing the game.

Developer

Thank you for playing! That's what I thought too, experimenting with battle systems in a small 1-hourish game. That said, too bad much of the content was not ready to be submitted. I plan to update the game with more skills and monsters after the jam.

I love the PSX aesthetic! The atmosphere is cool and the music is so nice! The PSX-style random battle encounters are also a nice touch.  Good job!

Thanks for playing!

I couldn't finish the game, it gives me an error: failed to load img/pictures/Header.png
Any tips?

Developer

Please copy folder img/faces and rename it img/pictures, that should fix it. Sorry for the bug!

ok, it works now

I love the audio design in this.  So chimy and ambient.  Reminds me of PS1 era JRPGs.  Especially with the menu interface.
I just wish I could play more of it.  It keeps failing to load images so I can't get very far.

EDIT:  I think it was looking for img/faces but it was searching for img/pictures instead.  I copy and pasted the folder and renamed it and it's working now.  This is either an unfortunate flub or and incridible piece of meta gaming XD.

I'll get back to you when I've tried some more.

EDIT 2:  OK made it to the Boss and... oh the revive system doesn't work and I'm down two helpers.  *Reads other comment* oh I can just use the Elixers... I have no Elixers and they won't refill... you're not making this easy for me XD.

I reloaded an older save and hoped the RNG wouldn't hand me any sneak attacks again.  Managed to beat the final boss with only losing one helper.  It was the only time I tried using magic, but I managed to get a hit in before Blinding fired off.

Obviously needs some hefty debugging, but the fact I worked so hard to get to the end is a testament to how lovely the art, sound and interface designs were.

Not sure how the Theme fits in, unless it's just the Ice and Fire.

Oh god thanks for playing until the very end despite all of this game's problems! Yes, the img/pictures one is a bug, as are the revive and the elixir ones. No time to playtest before submitting, but I definitely plan to update this after the voting period (with lots more content!).

The main theme is life and death, you can easily die, but you can also easily be brought back to life. Well it should be, if not for the revive/elixir bugs. XD

Second sphere wasn't reviving helpers for me, is that a bug or a feature? Ended up finishing it with only 2 helpers, as I was wandering for quite a while trying to figure out what "Right 3. Down 2." meant...

Audio was very loud, btw :) It was a calming melody, but I needed to turn down my volume quite a lot for it to feel comfortable.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for playing! It's a bug, I forgot to add revive function to the sphere as I was frantically trying to submit the game. You could still use elixirs to revive party members though. I'm also sorry for the audio being too loud, the settings' somehow reverted on the final build.

Right 3 Down 2 is the map's coordinate. The other coordinate should be on the green teleporter.

I like the idea of 1hp combat, and I think it can be really innovative if its fleshed out well!

Developer

thanks! definitely planned to update this with more monsters and skills!

Very rpgmaker!

I wandered around the cornmaze.

I got teleportated.

I fighted some goblins.

I luckily read the "do the copy of images" thing on the game's page.

I was not bowled over. But its a solid start.

Developer

thank you for playing! and thanks for the stream!

Took me a moment to get used to the controls (I prefer QE for turning) but then got comfortable with them.

Interesting concept, unfortunately I did not get far because of an fatal error: "failed to load img/pictures/herder.png". Tried it a couple of times but to no avail which is a show stopper.

I would not mind to see more of it, though.

Developer

Thanks for trying it out! For the error, copying the folder img/faces and renaming the copy to img/pictures should fix it. That said, the combat which is the main point of the game is still barebones so you might be disappointed. Planned to update it after the voting period though!

Yeah that fixed it! Thanks.

The turn based combat is a solid start, nothing to brag about and nothing to be ashamed off either. After all we all only had one week so sacrifices had to be made and corners had to be cut.
