How does you game fit the theme?
Reality can be very subjective, the fear and imagination of a child can render the mundane horrific, monsters real. Confidence can erase them.
On his way back from fetching a bottle of wine in the cellar, the child is scared by the sudden darkness and quickly imagines his worst fears. The Walkman he chances upon is his only way to escape his nightmares and return to the entrance of the cellar.

Did you write all the code and made all the assets from scratch?
We wrote all the code from scratch and used some fx assets, which are all mixed and edited (credited on the game's page) as well as our own.

Atmospheric platformer with good animations

Developer

(personally it was my first jam where I did animation so I'm very touched ^-^)
Thank very much for playing !

Absolutely amazing! The art, the sound, the way the mechanic works, all of this was really fun!

Developer

Thank you very much for those kind words, we really appreciate ^-^

Really solid game, tying the "reveal the truth!" mechanic, which is done to death, to an actual object in the world like a cassette player which comes with the caveat of having to rewind it makes it really stand out, bravo. On the other hand, I feel the player moves a little too slowly when the tape is off. I get it's supposed to feel sluggish when you're not listening to the tape, though, so I won't count it as a fault, it's just a little nitpick of mine :)

Developer

I guess I'll be slower than that kid if I was stuck in the dark ahah
But i feel you and we planned to fix some details about that in a few.  No more nitpick after that ahah
Thank you for the feedback and playing !

This game is great, awesome atmosphere, a lot of sound effects, and a really dark vibe

I think that the tape mechanic is also really good, it is used to reveal platforms and hide enemies, which is kind of basic, but it does the job

I think that if you added the opposite effect when activate the tape, of let's say hiding other kinds of platforms and revealing other things, it might add a lot to the puzzle element of the game.

Currently, you have to activate the tape whenever you can, it'll always benefit you, there's not any part of the game where you have to think of "do I need to activate the tape", and it might be useful for example in a platforming section where you need to time the tape so it ends just when you're about to jump to a platform that the tape hides, a lot of ways that this mechanic could've been used in

And also just another nitpick is that the character resets it's velocity after jumping, it is a bit annoying but not the end of the world

Really fun game, and really fits the theme, well done!

Developer

Thank you very much for your feedback !

Oh I see ! For the jam, it wasn't our priority to complicate the level with too much platforms, simply create a spooky mood coming from a kid's imagination. But It's actually a very cool idea ! We planned to make some changes very soon, we'll see if we can do something about it in the next updade.

Stay around ! ;)

The game is really fun. We can feel the fear of the child when he hasn't got his headphone. I love the smoke effect in foreground, it gives a good impression of "hell". The art style is wonderful ! But the granny is horrible to ask us to search another bottle :')

Left a rating a while back but forgot to leave a comment, so here I am :D

I absolutely loved all the art and sound design, it really built the atmosphere for a beautifully creepy game. I'm honestly super impressed at how well the art all fit together and was consistent considering you had multiple artists. I've seen too many games where they would have 2+ artists and the game would look like a mess of inconsistent art whether it just be style or even pixel size (if it was a pixel art style). If I could give 7 stars for graphics I would have.

I wish there was more to this game in terms of gameplay and design. The Walkman mechanic is super cool and all, but I think it could've been explored more thoroughly. The couple uses of the Walkman was explored in the first minute and then not really expanded upon, just repeated. The "levels" started to feel repetitive with no real sense of danger whatsoever. However, I do feel that your team was going for a more atmospheric kind of game rather than a challenging one, which is understandable and you definitely succeeded on that end.

Just some other small nitpicks I can remember:
- it'd be cool if I could see in a clearer way how much time I have left on the Walkman before I have to start rewinding other than just the visual/audio cues near the end (for an indication more subtle than just a bar to show this, maybe the blue light circle radius gets smaller and smaller as time goes on, or it gets dimmer)
- maybe make the creepy stuff move faster for an increased sense of danger
- adding platforming to a horror game felt a little off, since horror games usually have slow movement to build suspense, but the slow movement (and even the slightly increased movement during Walkman mode) felt really awkward for me to platform with
- the death animation felt slightly too long

I don't really play these kinds of games very often so I feel like a lot of these criticism are because of that, and if so feel free to just ignore it, but overall it was a pretty fun game!
:>

Thank you for all your kind words ! ^-^
We was two graphic artist (one for animations and one for environnements) and it was kind of the first time we all work together, so it's so cool to have this such of feedback ! Soon we'll put an new update to fix all those details so... stay around ! :D haha

Really liked the atmosphere of the game. kind of scary but fits with the lights and sounds in the game. Great entry and nice work! An indicator of the tape "length" would be nice (but probably too helpful? Not sure).

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! We chose not to show any user interface for the tape so as not to break the player's immersion.  Instead, we added visual and audio feedback to warn the player when the tape is about to end.

I really loved the design of the shadow monster and the music is good. I did have a hard time when jumping  but overall a great game

Developer

Thanks for playing :)

Nous avons choisi de faire un saut plus lourd pour représenter la maladresse de l'enfant, mais nous aurions probablement dû aussi améliorer les animations du saut de cette manière

I love the aesthetic you have created. Congratulations

Thanks!
