The visual presentation on this one is absolutely killer. Love the designs for each of the bosses and the artwork as a whole. Loved the environmental artwork as well. Detailed enough to flesh out the personality of the boss, but also not detailed to the point that it gets in the way of the action

The slime and it's cube form especially reminded me of one of the first bosses of titan souls lol.

The sound effects were nice, although the music kinda felt non-existant sometimes.

I felt like more could have been done in terms of implementing the theme into the moment-to-moment gameplay of the game, but it definitely made me want to play more carefully when I did attempt to go for a run without needing to use health. ( Unfortunately failed at it though kek )

I get that your aim was to make the player want to upgrade their stats after every fight, but I kinda feel that the base stats of the player could've been increased somewhat just to make it feel a little better. I also feel that the area covered by your scythe is honestly a little too small. Hits didn't register sometimes when it felt like they really should have

It was also really hard to tell when the player took damage. The feedback both visually and audio wise wasn't really noticable enough imo. Contrast to the damage feedback that the boss's have which was definitely more noticable ( although this admittedly could also have been somewhat better as well )

The boss's themselves were fun to fight and were definitely pretty dynamic with the various attacks they had. The acorn was definitely my favourite one to fight. Although I felt that some of their attacks could have had some more anticipation to them since they kind of come out of nowhere ( eg : The slime's attack where it elongates itself and moves side-to-side )

I liked the snowman fight, although I'm not really a fan of how you need to hit the pillars. I think the mechanic itself of using the pillars to hit the boss from under it is cool, but I didn't know about it for a while and kept dying because I tried hitting his snowman form. This wouldn't really be a problem if making use of the environment was a mechanic in some of the other fights, because then maybe I probably would have realised that you need to hit the pillars instead of just going for the boss. The real problem is how different this one fight was to every other fight.

( Frankly, my issues with the snowman might just be a bit of a personal thing, but I think that it's definitely still worth taking note of )

Still, once I did get it, it was a pretty cool fight. And that penguin was cute.

I'm not really a fan of the order of the boss's being randomised though. Especially since they vary quite a bit in terms of difficulty.

But at the end of the day, this was still a damn good game all things considered. I absolutely love the scale of things. Definitely very titan souls-ey, but feels like it's own thing at the same time.

Wow, thanks for the extremely comprehensive feedback!

Incorporating the theme was definitely one of our weak points for this jam, our design iterations carried us further from the theme than I had realized until it was too late lol.

We have a post jam update ready to go that addresses a lot of the problems with the player's stats and feedback. We also tweaked the boss's hitboxes and patterns. We're just waiting for the jam to end before we publish it.

It's interesting to hear your thoughts on the snowman, that boss in particular has been a little bit divisive! Some people seem to love it and others have struggled with it. We decided to add a more distinctive 'failed hit' sound, and we're brainstorming ways to make the pillar mechanic more obvious. But that boss could definitely stand to be streamlined!

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this post! This kind of feedback is super valuable to us because it helps us see the game from an outside perspective. Thanks for playing!

Good job! Will come and play it more thoroughly, trying to get through a basic test run and at least give it a try! Trying to get to everyone I can!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for giving it a try, and good luck on your mission!

3.8/5 !

if you can re-save or re-rate ours all of our previous ratings were deleted by mis communication… sorry for inconvenience

Best of luck! If you get the chance to read in time!

Was able to re-rate this also..... this deserves 5/5 ! letting you know great job!

Is there a bug on the snowman boss tho??? Because I found it impossible to hit him at all....but I beat 4 other bosses

(1 edit)

read the other comments and figured it was some strategic thing and it was.....I am really really impressed with all the diversity of the boss battles but I do agree with the one comment it seems like every other boss the goal is to hit the boss and with the snowman this is no the case and maybe the snowman himself should knock over a pillar at the beginning so you know the pillars are even knockable lol

But I think I rate this as the winner of the Jam in my opinion... It is the perfect EXCHANGE THEMED BOSS BATTLE GAME in this jam next to a couple others that are equally well done

Developer

Wow, thank you very much! We have a post jam version that's a little clearer about the snowman, and it has some other bug fixes as well. We'll be posting it as soon as the jam is over :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence, and good luck to you in the competition!

Love the Zelda-like vibe and aesthetics of the game. The artistic design and patterns of the bosses are perfect.  Good use of the jam's theme. I think there's some unfinished content in the game. You currently cannot unlock the shards at the end. Also there's no fullscreen option but it was still playable like this. It was like a Game Boy experience :)

I think this is one the strongest contenders of the jam. Great job and good luck!

Developer(+1)

Wow, thank you very much! The shards at the end get unlocked if you complete certain challenges like beating the game quickly, or not taking damage, so they're kinda tough to get. The post jam version will definitely have some quality of life updates :)

Thank you for playing!

Good boss design, readable patterns and a pleasant soundtrack. The game turned out to be really interesting. Great job!

Developer

Thank you very much! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)

I liked the game. The bosses were varied. My favorite one is the snow man because you get to play around pilars as both protection and a way of hitting the enemy.

I think the slime boss should have a period were it shows its going to jump, I found it very hard to dodge. I also didn't undestand how each bosses related to the reaper role.

Overall, the gameplay is fun, and the visual aspect it also very well done, really liked the dash effect. It was a bit easy but there's always challange mode for that.

Developer

Thank you for playing!

I agree that the slime definitely could have used an anticipation animation. As far as the story goes, they're all just supposed to be powerful old monsters who have lived beyond their time.

Thank you for the kind words, and the detailed critique :)

Most inventive boss design in this jam for sure! Loved the acorn boss.
I feel that the game first speed upgrade should have been the default speed though. The game feels night and day once you get the upgrade!
I also feel that the boss are a bit too fast. It's sometimes hard to avoid things because of it.
Absolutely beautiful game as well!

Developer

Thank you so much! Yeah we had trouble picking a starting speed knowing how much the upgrades could add. We would like to release a post jam version with some stat balancing and bug fixes, so the feedback is greatly appreciated! Thanks for playing!

Absolutely beautiful and well done art! Super fun game where each boss was unique and interesting to play against. It feels like a very polished game. I enjoyed it! ^^

Developer

You are very kind! We're glad you had fun, thanks for playing our game!

It was really fun to play, and the graphics is really nice! I would like to play more!

Developer

Thank you very much, we're probably gonna flesh it out a bit more post jam, so stay tuned! Thanks for playing:)

Wow dialogue system, with interesting bosses and good pixel art, music. So good, remind me of moonligther!

Developer

Thank you, that's high praise, Moonlighter is great! Thanks for playing :)

I don’t know why exactly, but feel strong crypt of necrodancer vibes from this, thats neat.

Didn't really get how rejecting the help gets you new unlocks at the end(I assumed that "help" is boons that you can take after the boss, but i did run with no upgrades and healing and get only one gold sphere in the last room).

The controls are fine and so does music. Sprite work and visuals are great! Love the replayability, alas it has not much of a meaning in the end.

Developer

Thanks you! Yeah, unfortunately  I did a bad job of explaining the mechanic, but if you do a run without picking up health you get a reward. The other ones are for finishing as quick as possible, and playing in challenge mode, and hardest of all not getting hit during challenge mode.

Thanks for playing, and thank you for the feedback. I hope you enjoyed!

Submitted

wow, the game is really fun, the graphics are beautiful, the bosses are very well designed. It is diverse and unique. You really did well.

I'd love for you to come play my game too if you're interested.

Developer

Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed playing!

p.s. I swung by your page and gave your game a try, nice job :)

Fun little game, it feels a bit weird that the second boss seems to be the hardest and the hitbox were a bit weird, but other than that, your game has a nice replay ability. It also looks and sounds really good.

Developer

Thank you! The boss fights are actually in a random order, so I would be curious to hear which one you found the hardest. As far as the hitboxes go, I'm definitely planning to tweak them a bit post jam. Thank's for playing!

It was the mage

Developer

Ahh, gotcha! It can be really  hard for me to judge difficulty because I know the fights so well. Thanks again for playing :)

Ok, this one was too good. Why it reminds me of blasphemous + death door? I dunno.

catched a bug on the last boss, where he moves into the corner forever

Developer(+1)

Thank you! I've never played deaths door, but it's on my to do list. Blasphemous is great though!

We've had a couple of people run into that bug unfortunately. I already have a fix, I just have to wait until the jam is over to push the change. Thank you for playing!

Very enjoyable game. I loved the variety of the bosses, and specially the mechanics of the last one. Amazing :)

Developer

Thank you for playing!

This is such a fun game! It's both a chill out and a stress inducing game at the same time!  The bosses are very well done, big shoutout to the snowman and mad accorn!  The audio fits really well with the asthetic!

Would love to see this getting worked on after this jam! Cause if this is after 1 month I'd love to see what can we done with 3 months!

Developer(+1)

Wow, thank you very much! It's awesome to hear about peoples favorite bosses, it makes me feel like I did something right on the design front lol.

We definitely have a post jam bug fix version planned, but the game seems to be drawing a really good response, so we may consider doing a bit more with it :) Thanks for the very kind words!

Submitted

Very fun game! The bosses are well done and polished. The art looks great and music sounds great! I’ve got nothing else to say lol

Developer

Thank you so much! I take your speechlessness as a compliment lol :)

Submitted

Really fun game to play with interesting boss design, I especially enjoyed the snowman. The art and sounds all compliment eachother really well.

Developer

Thank you for the very kind words, I hope you enjoyed yourself :)

I fought that one boss the wrong way and it took me 3rd tries for me to learn to fight it.
Some bosses are more vary than other bosses.
But the game is very good, the visual and sounds fit very well.

Developer

Thanks for for playing! There have been a few people who have had a bit of trouble figuring out some of the fights, I'll probably try to make things a bit clearer in a post jam version. Thanks for the kind words!

Beautiful art. Too bad i didn’t how to beat the first boss. I couldn’t even damage the thing. So idk how the game goes after the first stage.

Developer

Thank you :) the bosses appear in a random order, so if you had trouble with the first one you tried, you can always do a second run and see if you get better luck. Either way, thanks for giving it a try!

Ah, i see. It was the snowman boss. After minutes of trying to hit it, i noticed its’ hp wasn’t going down. So i tried trying to discover its hitbox. I tried every part but i couldn’t find it at all. So i just gave up and let my char die.

Developer

Oh gotcha, the snowman needs to be knocked down by raising a pillar beneath him before he can be damaged. I was a little worried that it might not be obvious enough though. Thanks for the feedback :)

10/10 such a polished well-made game! Good job :D
