Oh no, it's not because it's actually repetetive. You did a great job, I was just a little lost so I was listening to it for way too long haha
And thank you for telling me, I'll give it another spin to see the end!
Very simple, and very fun! One of my favorite submissions, just because it feels like a near-complete arcade-y game for mobile platforms that I could see commercially available right now, whereas many jam games feel like tech demos. I also tried breaking it in some way and couldn't, so kudos on making it structurally sound haha
Great work! <3
You did a good job with this game! The idea is solid, programmed well, and the sound effects add a lot. But the execution has one main flaw.
You can barely see without using the lighter, which means moving around without it is really dangerous. Because the lighter has unlimited uses and is on a cooldown, it encourages the player to just wait around for 5 seconds, use the lighter to see the room, then move a little bit and wait for the cooldown again, lest they risk dying and restarting from the beginning.
A potential solution could have been to add some kind of threat behind you, forcing you to keep moving and take risks with your lighter still on cooldown.
Another option could be adding checkpoints, making it more of a fast-paced, fail and quickly repeat type of game where death isn't so punishing.
Please keep making games!
Really nice little game! The level is well-made, and I like how many unique situations you created within it (like trapping the charging station with the spikes above it, making some sections have a low roof to make it harder to jump over things, throwing in some branching paths, etc.). Having an entire (albeit simple) bossfight on top of that was great!
For some feedback, I think I would only point out the fairly obvious things, like a lack of polish on some of the animations and hitboxes. Other than that, this is great work for your first game!
I definitely think the main character's design, big evil robot boss's design, and the use of the theme are the highlights here. I hope your future projects carry on that idea of embracing creativity, and I hope you all don't let your sparks die!
Oh, and I think every game should have its main character bust a move at the end, it makes everything better.
After drifting through space for a few minutes without finding anything else to eat, I think I finished the game?
The music was driving me just a tad crazy at the end, but I think the idea is good and not too common, and the animated sprites for the different sizes of the fire are especially well-made, so big props to monk3y, the one credited for making the art!
Yes, I completely forgot to include the controls in-game, and only realized after we published haha
This is our first proper attempt at a game, so to see one of the creators of my favorite submission to this jam say such nice words (and give good feedback) about what we made, it's genuinely got me all giddy!
And I'm so glad you liked the artstyle, it was the thing we put the most effort into <3
That's so, so kind of you!
And also darn it, when making the sprites I even thought "There's statistically no way someone who is colorblind plays our game, right?", and it turns out I was a fool for thinking that haha
I'm new to art, so I have never done any high contrast/colorblind-accessible adjustments before. Do you have any experience with the process or technicalities of making something like that? I'd love to include it as an option for future games.
I have the same gripes with the gameplay as the others, but I think it's balanced out fairly well by the witty banter and cool overall style. The assets you guys used (the tilemaps for the levels especially) are definitely the weakest part of the visuals, while the custom stuff is definitely the best. So I think, given more time to make everything with that higher level of quality, you all can make something really special!
And I think it's a good indicator of your ability to write good jokes when the "No lights left meaning... No more cigarettes!?" followed immediately by the bone crunch sound effect made me laugh out loud! Please keep it up, this one is one of the best submissions in my opinion.
One little thing for if you end up updating this, I got softlocked in the room with the large monster skull that the stairs appear inside of. The character was trying to auto-move to some specific spot but couldn't, so all inputs were locked. Just adding an ability to restart the level when unable to use the lighter would be enough to make that less frustrating.
I'm not sure why, but the game isn't really playable for me. Might be something with the resolution, because it seems to be cut off when in windowed, but then doesn't accept my mouse input when in fullscreen. I've tried a couple times and couldn't get it to work. Looks cool, though, so I hope it gets fixed!
I am 100% sure the cover image is AI-generated. Not only does it not match the game's style (which is made entirely of assets), but I can literally see the artifacts when zooming into it. The dev also made a Flappy Bird game with yet another AI-generated cover image with crazy artifacting, and their other socials are filled with AI.
To then not disclose this in a gamejam, and even go as far as to put a "No AI-generated content" tag on it is shameful.
