Positives:
+The music! That is some certified SNES music
+the character sprite art also fits the snes theme perfectly
+the gameplay is also incredibly unique with moving units around and having them act on their own.
Suggestions:
>the tileset art looks a little bit more 8-bit than 16-bit but I still think it's cohesive
>I'd have preferred the game start with a tutorial or small battle I could have started on my own terms
>some sort of indication as to which enemy unit my units are attacking. Perhaps a hurt animation could have helped
>I couldn't get very far so not sure if there's a loop or not
Overall:
I enjoyed my time but my mushrooms have unfortunately perished. They will be missed and in my stir fry
I sucked at it but had a really fun time just messing around with the mechanics
Positives:
+clever implementation of being stuck in a loop! Using your partner as a weapon and mechanic was really neat.
+music was fun and goofy
+I liked the artstyle and it looked like it could fit SNES
Suggestions:
>an easier starting area with more room to mess with the loop between the prisoners. Probably just a skill issue on my end
>More sound effects for destroying drones and getting hit
Overall:
Insanely clever and well designed mechanic! Hitting enemies with enough speed felt really good!
Shoop da woop it's a loop!
Positives:
+the banter was between the two characters was pretty funny
+I like the character design
+ the music got me in the mood to not give up. I also liked the choice of sfx, I think I heard the AlttP monster death sound
Suggestions:
>I seemed to keep restarting to the title screen. I wouldn't mind just being back with the wizard immediately.
>Felt more like 8-bit NES art
>I would have preferred on controller that continue dialogue be mapped to "A" on Xbox
Bugs:
>the physics of my jump and the speed of my movement seem to have changed between screens. I was suddenly very slow and my jump was sluggish in the second platforming screen with the bottomless pit.
Overall:
I gave up but was still charmed by the characters and presentation. It kept me going and the new dialogue was fun. I kept dying in the bottomless pit at the first screen. Skill issue on my part
Positives:
+IT'S AN ACTUAL SNES GAME!!!! That's so cool
+I liked the main character's design. All the sprite art overall. This feels like a minigame in a SUDA51 game. Definitely has style.
+The music gave me life. Bopping tune
Suggestions:
>the lack of a sound effects when I shot and hits landed threw me off
>I wish the loop was more than just the music changing. Liek a harder version of the level with new harder enemies and hazards with the same layout or something.
Bugs:
In the browser I noticed some of the wrong sprites loading on the tileset and bullets as the game went on. That's genuine SNES game running through an in-browser emulator for ya though. I'd call that bug a positive
Overall:
Rad as hell! I wish I could make a real SNES game, that's so neat.
Must protect the gator at all costs.
Positives:
+I loved the characters so much. I would be friends with both of them though the crocodile would probably eat me.
+the gameplay was fun and simple, just the way I like it.
+ the art was very expressive!
+ the music reminded me of Banjo Kazooie, very super nintendo and fun.
Suggestions:
> The art while good wasn't really cohesive but like I'm being nitpicky. I would still call it a success
>The infinite scrolling I think wasn't the most inventive use of the loop feature. I'd go a little crazier next time. I feel like I could have leaned harder on looping in my game too.
Overall:
Awesome!
Medieval Gear Solid
Positives:
+The mood was pretty cool in this game. I like the MGS series and it fun to hear the alert sfx again.
+the guard design looked really cool and inspired
+the use of the pixel filter was smart to get a snes look but stay first person. Looked like a less crusty DOOM
Suggestions:
>I think sfx for acquiring the key could be helpful alongside the text on the screen you provided. Like a "bling" sound.
>Not really sure how this was a loop other than the fact you back to the start each time you lose. Nothing really changed whether I won or lost.
>While I thought the filter was clever there's no substituting traditional pixel art. I think using something like crocotile or sprytile would help with the 3D 2D look.
Bugs:
>I ran into guards a couple of times and didn't lose. I think a trigger might be off. I had to run into the guard on purpose to trigger the loss.
Overall:
I thought it had great use of color and could play a full game in this style if it had combat or the like. I think it missed the theme and constraint but was inspired nonetheless. I look forward to seeing what you cook up next.
Cowboys die twice, I died 3 times but got to the end
Positives:
+the sliding feels really good to pull off and the gunplay is snappy
+The enemy designs are fun
+the getting better stats each time you die was brilliant, I'd love more of that. Give me a double jump if I really flunk.
+I liked the ominous voice at first condescending and taunting turning into it getting flustered. I had to do all 3 loops to piss it off.
+some good ol rootin tootin megaman styled platforming
Suggestions:
>I wish the platforming was a bit less floaty and the level design was more challenging so I would die faster and get better equipped at a quicker rate or experience the loop aspect more.
>the second loop the only difference was blue lights. This didn't really impact my playing at all. I think a loop with more spikes would be cool!
>The visuals felt more NES maybe going into SNES territory on the tileset. Could use more shading and dithering to where possible
Overall:
A good time! I enjoy a good megaman and I think your loop on death mechanic was brilliant.
I got to Ann's statue and I think it got stuck in an unintentional loop where it fades to white and the dialogue pops up over and over. If I move away from the statue my screen stays white.
Positives:
+This 100% feels like a SNES game, the pixel art, music
+I especially liked the character art and the music track chosen.
+The story is very sad and piecing it together is heart wrenching.
Suggestions:
>I'd like to use my controller. Definitely not a deal breaker, just a preference.
>the trigger to change z-index of sprites of buildings could use some fine tuning. I wound up in front of the back of buildings a couple times.
Overall:
I was immersed in the world, and it feels like there is a lot of purpose behind the story. I may come back to it later if it's fixed as the bug halted my playthrough
Where the heck are the wind spirits?
Positives:
+I could code to this music pretty comfortably. I like it!
+the color choice was nice all throughout
+the world building and setting were a nice touch. I like the characters and the fact there seems to be a larger world outside of what we experience.
+character art was very nice
Suggestions:
>the overworld, trees, and school felt like they were made in ms paint contrasting with the character art.
> I would like better instructions as to what my objective is. I went straight to the professor and got the bad ending. I booted it up again and again couldn't find anything in the overworld.
>would love controller support
Overall:
Cool world and personality but no clue how to play it.
I got 5 loops in!
Positives:
+ The visuals of the characters and tileset definitely were very SNES
+the concept of going through the same level but different is a cool way to follow the theme
+the getting crushed animation was funni
Suggestions:
>I wish there was controller support. I also had to switch to my mouse to click buttons, I'd have prefered to just keep it to arrows and the jump button throughout the whole experience
>Not sure why there was Sonic ring collecting sfx in the music. Kinda through me off
Overall:
I had a pleasant experience. Marv seems like a chill guy, I hope he gets a less dangerous job in the future.
I escaped the lab!
Positives:
+the rat, he's incredibly rad. a bad dude with tude
+the animations, especially the levitation
+the grungy aesthetics
Suggestions:
>could have used more enemy variety
>the loop was more of an annoyance than a feature. I think my game has this issue too. Once you figure out what to do, it just kinda wastes your time before you can do it.
>the lack of controller support really took me out of it being SNES inspired
Overall:
I love the punk attitude and the sunglasses on the rat. The hand plucking his dead body was also a cool touch.
DISCLAIMER: I only made it to the third loop and then I accidentally exited out.
Positives:
+I love the character art especially! For that matter all the sprite art was pleasant.
+Also the music takes me back to Dragon Quest and the Tales games.
+character designs are solid.
+The variety of items at the shop
Suggestions:
>One thing I would have liked is a better indication of which party member is currently being controlled, maybe animating them when it's their turn.
>More encounters per loop to level up and have more of an indication of how much stronger my party has become
>I kind of wish the demon lord killed me faster and the grind overall was shortened so I would get stronger faster.
>Progression is pretty slow for a game jam game
>I would have liked a visual indication of which characters are buffed
Overall:
I like the concept of looping to grind levels and equipment, but it is time consuming. Overall, I had a good time though. It is very impressive that you made such good RPG bones within the timeframe.
I have no rhythm and I must scream.
Can't speak to the musical part because I 'm terrible at music games even though I think they're cool.
What I can give useful info on is:
I liked the art! The first alien gave me Evangelion vibes.
with ABXY I could have sworn there was controller support. Would have like arrow keys or WASD to input combos instead if keyboard/mouse.
I'm looking forward to watching the stream of this game so I can see what it's supposed to be like.
I don't play too many SRPGs but I know that it probably took a tremendous amount of time and effort. It shows and once you get into the gameplay loop it rules! The art and music were already fantastic to boot. For the gameplay my one recommendation would be some further visual indication of what phase of the turn I'm on.
The gameplay loop itself is satisfying once you get into it and I'd recommend it to SNES fans like myself!
The gameplay was a mixed bag for me but I like atmosphere above all else in the games I like to play and you excel at that. The style and presentation were unique and I enjoyed those aspects. The opening cutscene confused me and I thought the controls didn't work, I think using textboxes to give context would help on that front.
