I still have a lot of work to do on the game. I don't know if I'll finish on time.

Kids, don't play this game: it was the Troll who guided my hand to write it and as he never went to school, there are a lot of syntax, grammar, spelling mistakes....

Submitted

hello.

Nice graphics. The game feels strange with the name you picked.

I'm stuck in the start of the game. I took the boot and weared it and the game said a raven moved from the tower with something shiny in his claws. I thought i could get some sand and put it in the boot but that didn't work.

And for "get boot" i recommend printing a line like "you got the boot" then press key and then the rest.

Submitted

For the boot, you may be right, but the image of the boot removed and the additional text, it may do a lot. And I already have a lot of waiting for a key to be pressed.

Submitted (1 edit)

How you put sand in the boot with only a verb and a noun?
> get sand or put sand or fill boot or insert sand?

You can fill and empty the boot with lake water. But filling the boot with sand is a good idea when the fish is not yet in the water.

Host

I understood the magic boots were to reach the apple in the tree (jumping), but now I'm at the bottom of the lake, and I don't know what to do.

I also got a point from hitting the hidden wall west of the lakeshore.

Submitted

What are you waiting for?

>wait

Host

This game is trippy.  There seems to be a minor issue with the screen that is displayed after the fish rescue displaying text before the image.

Hmm... I'm in the tower... if only I had a piece of string or a longer arm...

Submitted

You have a raven at your orders instead, it's better, isn't it?
Caw... Caw... (Croâ.... Croâ... in French.)

Submitted (1 edit)

Stuck on tower.

When you type "stand" the game tells "you stand up again" even if you are already standing.

And about the "wait" part. I think it would be better if you code that if player takes a few turns the fish shows up.

I got 3 points as well. Is there any for blowing on torch?

Submitted

The score is not really implemented...

Yeah... I can't make any more progress in the tower. Apart from the cool feature on level 2, and the non-communicative avian guardian at the top... I'm stuck as to what to try...

Submitted

At the top of the tower, 'whistle' or 'say caw'.

Go down to the throne room, sit on it and 'say  caw'.

Submitted

I haven't played this yet, but 'whistle' and 'say caw' sound pretty obscure. I'm sure I would never get this. Are there in-game hints that would suggest these commands are appropriate?

Submitted

I'm not sure of anything (and especially not in English).
The crow is perched on a gargoyle and it says "Caw... Caw..."
I don't know how else to do anything but whistle or imitate its cry.

Submitted

That should be okay. I still don't think I would have guessed it, though. You've now got me curious, so I'll try to play it as soon as possible.

I'm sorry but that is too obscure as it stands. Especially given the responses to things like TALK RAVEN and SAY HELP... If the raven responded with CAW? to those, then maybe I'd have got there.

I might have got WHISTLE in the end... I'd been trying virtually every other way of making a noise... but I think you're going to get players giving up in the tower without an extra hint. I completely get that the throne gives the hint that the raven is going to be the solution.

One thing you could do, is time how long the player has been stuck in the castle and change one of the examine messages, or add an extra environmental message, if they've been stuck there too many turns. Something like "The raven is out of reach. You wonder how you could get its attention."

Submitted

Don't be sorry. You're right to say what you say. If an experienced player, as you seem to be, is blocked then the game has a big issue.

Right, made more progress. Done the raven thing. Got the two objects out.

Stuck again, playing in the sand at the beach.

Submitted(+2)

About the "say caw" i think you can code that player can't caw at first but when he sits on throne the game prints "you feel like you can speak in the ravens language" and then the player can say caw. This gives player an idea of what has to be done

Submitted

I need to find a simple acceptable solution before the end of the Jam and I will develop this afterwards.

Can you complete the game in its current form? I've got an implement for digging, a source of light, and have closed the treasure chest, but I'm at a loss as what to do next.

Submitted

Yes, I will complete the game before the end of the CaveJam.
You will return to the burning tower in the last room (the dark room that is now lit by the fire) and you will find an object that will tell you where to dig with the shovel (you no longer need the torch and I will use it differently). I must also put the epilogue and prologue that will explain why this game title and why the troll has been transformed into stone, but also the essential role of the pearl in this story, which I did not have time to develop; a lot of work to do!

I don't have time to code the game this week but I don't want to end up in the CaveJam dead room, like apparently many people registered.
I won't have time to polish the game and debug it either, but that's the way it is and I have to deal with it.
I'm going to finish the game before the end of the CaveJam.

Submitted

Hey folks. I've just started playing "Talk to him about love" and I'm loving it. I'll post some suggestions for Auraes when I'm finished, but do yourselves a favour. PLAY THIS GAME! It's great.

Submitted

I spoke too early. This game gets quite hard. I got myself into an unwinnable position and started again. Now I think I've got myself into an unwinnable position again.

I've closed the chest and don't know what purpose that serves. I'm stuck in the Cave of Magic with an item that I need at the lake and an item that I need to light the dark room down from the king's floor. I can't take both items out of the exit, as it's too narrow. I can't take the first item, as it's too dark. If I take the second item, I end up back at the lake, but burn down the tower in the process, then I can't get back to the tower.

Does the butterfly east of the lake serve any purpose other than to lead you to the secret exit that serves no purpose other than to give you a point?

Any help would be most appreciated. Gareth, did you get any further?

From memory, Garry, the butterfly reveals the route back into the cave... so you can retrieve that other item. I imagine you've got to around about the end of what was there when I tried it. You're meant to burn down the tower... the idea, I believe, is that in the full game you'll be able to swim back there.

Oh... and French crows go Crôa Crôa apparently! :) I can't find what noise French ravens make.

Submitted

Okay. I'll dabble with the butterfly a bit more, but I get the feeling that it can't be finished just yet. We might have to wait for the final submission. I hope he finishes it.

You sound like you're at the end where I was. If you're getting the message about 'not being able to return to the tower in this version' then that's the limit of what is there so far.

It's certainly surreal. :) I felt referring to the chest as "he" was all part of that... I felt like half the inanimate objects had the potential to be alive in the game!

Submitted

Aha! I had to FOLLOW BUTTERFLY to return to the Cave of Magic. Let's see how I get on from there...

Ah, yes... I remember that being one of the slightly more obscure inputs. Getting the spade doesn't seem to do anything at the moment.

Submitted

I've been digging the sand until it looks like a quarry. No joy, I'm afraid. Maybe that's as far as I can go. I guess I'll have to put it on hold until the final submission.

Yeah, I think we will need to go back to the tower to retrieve the location as to where to dig. But that bit isn't in there yet.

Submitted

In the meantime, here's my comments so far:

Lake Shore:

You've allowed for DRINK WATER (bonus points for that), but it says, "There's nothing suitable to drink here." Surely, you could allow drinking the water or give a message to explain why you can't drink it, like "It's too stagnant to drink."
X TOWER: You've said "It's" and "It is" in the same sentence. If you're going to use contractions, it's probably better to be consistent and use them all the time.
ABOUT: "About what? About love." Love it!
Use ENTER as a synonym for GO.
Is it "raven's tower" (common noun) or Raven's Tower" (proper noun)? You've used a mixture of both ("raven's Tower") and it's used inconsistently throughout the gamef.

Outside Cave of Magic:
Add FEEL as a synonym for TOUCH. You've done it elsewhere.
SMELL BOOT: "Troll's" should be "troll's".
TALK TROLL: "These ears" should possibly be "His ears".

Inside Tree:
Needs its own image.

In Front of Raven Tower:
Needs its own image.
ENTER LAKE caused me to ENTER TOWER.

Ground Floor of Raven's Tower:
Needs its own image.
X LIGHT: "something glistens silently" should be "something glistens", or is it possible for something to glisten loudly?

King's Floor:
"King's" should be "king's", unless it's a proper noun like "King Arthur's".
"dances" should be "dance".
X TORCH: "opposite the throne one" should be "opposite the throne".
SIT THRONE: "crow's throne" should be "raven's throne" (for consistency). Crows and ravens are different. I just did some reading up. Crows make a caw sound and ravens make a lower croak sound, so maybe yours is actually a crow.

Top of Tower:
Needs its own image.

Cave of Magic:
When you open and close chest, it says "Does he expect something?" As a chest is an inanimate object, shouldn't that be "Does it expect something?"
INSERT PEARL: "the one if it" should be "it"; "He almost" should be "It almost".

Thanks. I'll make the corrections.

Concerning the graphics, I tried, as many here, to find tricks to overcome the difficulty. Lighting the floors of the tower seemed like a good idea to me; I'm not a graphic designer or illustrator. I understand the frustration and disappointment for the player, but he has to deal with it.

I didn't think that trying to make a little amateur adventure game for a Game Jam was such a serious thing. It's good that it's like that.

This is the final stretch and I will be very happy if my game is next to yours.

Submitted

Hey, it's already very good - probably my favourite so far.

Submitted

Geez, this game is hard. I am in the depths of a grim cell carrying a treasure map. There is no escape and I have run out of ideas. I need a clue.

In keeping with the rest of the game, it's a bit of a surreal solution. The map shows you where you need to go.

Submitted

Needless to say, I've examined the map, read the map, followed the map and several other weird and wonderful commands (no, it's not edible), but drawn a blank. Or so I thought.

I went where the map indicated using a Scott Adams' style command and, blow me down, I ended up back at the beach. Now I've finished the game with a less than optimal score and am wondering what I've missed.

There are a few little points for discovering secrets, such as the invisible walls early on. And a big ten pointer before you end the game, which ties in with the good ending.

(+1)

Went back to this one, just to check the above, so I thought I might as well get the proper (good) ending.

Yes, you are the king and master of this adventure. Congratulations.
I hope you get the gold medal, and if you don't like gold you might like the chocolate one.
If you don't like gold or chocolate then you'll only get my congratulations.

Submitted

I keep ending up in the grim cell carrying nothing.  Any hints as to how you get the map?

You get it from your cell mate.

Submitted

Thanks!
