Ahh, I can understand that confusion.
I THINK I see what the problem is with idle XP earnings.
Right now all of my active character - Outerworld team and Expeditions team - are all in a Soul Room, except one character. Seven hours have passed and all those who are in a soul room have 7XP, the one who is not has more.
So it would seem that the soul room does not add XP gain from the Soul Room does not add to XP gain from the main Expi feature, it replaces it. It also seems to reset current XP amount upon quitting the game.
I think you just need to find a way for XP to never to be removed, lost or reset, only added. Sounds simple in my mind, but of course I'm not the nerd here.
Well, not THAT kind of nerd ;)
I'm wondering if in a recent update you changed a few things.
Obviously you lowered the chance of freeze %age of Soulmancer's spell, but did you lower the chance of getting hammers from Expedition and did you drastically change the number of non-combat options in Outerworld?
Maybe I was lucky getting four hammers between the time they were added to expedition and the time that they started working and maybe I'm just being unlucky now, but there have been tweaks. I feel like that Lucky Charms cereal leprechaun getting super defensive over my hammers.
I used to be able to make a path with maybe only one skull in 20 levels if I wanted, now its hard to not have one skull in three.
In fact, I think that when I first played there were less non-fight options too, or maybe I just didn't really know what I was doing then. So maybe the question is, did you increase the non-fight options in a not-so-recent update and then undo it more recently?
I'm back at the very early stages. I started from level 1 with a noob team to try and build up some of the low level characters in the hope that some of the high level characters would appear in Expansion. No luck yet.
It is fine battling rather than solving puzzles, but if nothing has changed then it's just perception or luck. No worries. Good to know that nothing has actually changed.

Soul Room Exp Issue:
Looks like you might have been on to something; I noticed a point in the code where it could have set the XP of the character to 0 when adding Soul Room Exp. Great Find!
Other than that, a few effects weren't working properly, for example, summon. Those should be fixed now.
Another visual error I keep forgetting to mention.
When you have finished a long Otherworld run and it shows you all the things you've earned when you die, almost everything is listed in its own box. But anything that is used via the Sanctum hammer (not expedition hammer) appears over the screen rather than in its own box. Like a list of accessories has been copied and pasted on top of the regular end-of-Outerworld screen.
I just opened the game and there was an error in my Outerworld team's description.
Looking at their HP it was listed as 13/13, 14/14, 15/15 & 15/15. They all looked a little low, but as they were at 100% I didn't mind fighting. The level opened and they were all at under 50% HP. In fact they were at 13/30, 14/29. 15/33 & 15/35.
So the initial page showed their current HP as both actual and max. I usually stop Outerworld at a rest site, so I wouldn't have noticed this happening before so I don't know if this is a new or an old issue or just a freakish one-off.
Anyway, another issue to look at.
Also, do you watch any TV shows? I watch all sorts and am currently LOVING the new season of Fargo. Obviously I don't know if you've ever seen it, but the first two seasons were amazing and the next two were good but slowly getting worse. This season is superb again.
I could talk about TV shows all day long, but if you are not into them or you watch Ru Paul's Drag Race, Ice Road Truckers or The Voice then we have nothing to talk about!
If you do watch, just tell me your top three all-time shows. Don't think too hard, my top three would be randomly selected from my top 10.
Breaking Bad
Dark
Lost
Actually the first two will always be the first two. The third changes from day-to-day.
I will have to give Hell on Wheels a go. I have not heard of it, but anyone who has Severance, Sherlock and Love Death and Robots in their top sort-of-three has good taste.
I am very much eagerly awaiting season 2 of Severance. I will have to rewatch season 1 first though as it was an utter mindfuck.
Season 1 of LD&R was almost flawless, the later seasons had their highs and lows.
I'm downloading all five seasons anyway. If it hasn't grabbed me by the end of season one, I'll probably stop.
If you want to try Fargo, there is no need to see any of the other seasons or the original movie. Each season has no bearing on the other. They are only connected inasmuch as they are all true stories and they all took place in Minnesota.'
'True' can also be used to mean the truth that someone involved believed, no matter how insane it may sound to some of us.
But it's a great show. I would recommend season 1 or the current season 5 if you fancy giving it a go.
One more thing. Does the Equipment Generator work?
I always get a notification about Orbs generated, but not equipment. Though I am not certain that I have had it for 12 hours. Regardless, I don't think that either room needs a notification that requires me to close. A simple +1/2/3, the same as idle creds/XP would be fine, I think, for both Orbs and Equipment.
My slow PC gets really slow when the Orb notification is loading. I wonder if the Equipment notification is lost in the processing time. A simple +1 would probably not tax my machine as much.
Last time I checked it worked.
Regardless, I don't think that either room needs a notification that requires me to close.
I wonder if "Does X work?" would become more common if the notifications were less obvious?

I see, perhaps so.
My slow PC gets really slow when the Orb notification is loading.
I'll see if I can optimize this, as it shouldn't be that taxing on your system.
Something that has always happened now and then, and it is probably to do with my ancient PC is that when I load the game, instead of being taken to the initial menu I am taken to an empty screen with an arrow in the bottom right that asks me to 'leave this screen' except it doesn't do anything, so I ALT F4 and it is fine the next time.
