Description
This is an original soundtrack for an imaginary video game called “Dichotomy” that takes influence from funk, soul, jazz, and disco. Two rival gangs occupy the streets of the city Midnight Metropolis. The uptown Neon Heights are always at odds with the Downtown Shade and this OST explores the culture of the two groups and demonstrates what happens when these two rivals from two totally different worlds collide. I created this soundtrack with Garageband using Garageband instruments, DSK saxophone, and Stickz FXT using a keyboard midi controller. Please enjoy my original soundtrack, Dichotomy!

Artist comment:
Please enjoy this 48 hour OST!

Theme:

Two Worlds

How does it fit the theme?
Even in a single city, the life of those in Neon Heights and Downtown Shade feel worlds apart. While they may share the same roots, the members of each of these gangs express themselves very differently. In classic Westside Story-esque fashion, this OST explores how two rival groups are different and what happens when the worlds collide. Musically, I used varying musical styles (disco/four on the floor vs. funk/soul) to represent each of the two groups and tried to create something new when combined together. I think this soundtrack perfectly fits the theme and highlights that even two different worlds may not be as different as they may seem on the surface.

Great vibes in these tracks, the create a good coherant feel to the game, but having contrasting elements within them to get that two worlds idea

Great work on this, Downtown Shade is a proper vibe!

Great tracks that fit very well the game. Love the disco influence and the beginning of midnight metropolis reminds me of west side story. Good work!

wow, this reminds me  of celeste soundtrack, especifically the remixes of the mirror temple and celestial resort, good job

I thought I already commented  ><' I like the coherence but also the diversity of this soundtrack ! I also love the choices of sounds, it makes me easily picture midnight metropolis !

Groovy! Somehow, I can hardly think of any video game soundtracks prominently featuring funk or similar genres, and I have no idea why, because I can totally see this as a game soundtrack! (Maybe it's just the games I'm playing, though)

I think for the theme, it might have been interesting to explore genres that are a bit further apart, but the way it is now, it definitely makes for a very cohesive soundtrack. I think all four tracks are distinct, yet fit together very well and just generally sound really cool. And for what it's worth, I'm a big fan of the random trumpet hits :)

Thank you for your comment! I think I would have also liked to explore more contrasting genres and that would have added even more to the theme correlation. Given the time constraints and the fact that I have never written anything in some of these genres before, I'm still happy with what I came up with and found it to be a great learning experience. Your constructive feedback is much appreciated!

Amazing composition and uniqueness of each theme. Neon Heights is RPG-ish I wanna go adventuring with it, Downtown Shade is jazzy, Midnight Metropolis is so chill I can picture driving through the city, but the Menu Theme, oh mannn, too bad I won't start the game coz I just want to chill and keep listening haha. Your mix is of amazing quality and I love the stereo panning too.

All of them fade out, are they meant to loop or will there be longer versions of them?

Oh man, this jam is chokefull of amazing compositions!!

Thanks so much for your kind comments! I faded each of them out just after the repeat to show how smoothly the transition back to the beginning would be. Personally, this is my favorite way to listen to loopable OSTs, but there are probably lots of "right" ways to do it. Thank you again!

What an awesome collection of jazzy tunes. The menu theme is absolutely fantastic!  Reminds me of birdman from Pilotwings 64. I actually spent quite some time playing this track to improv over it on my e piano. Made my day!

1: Always a fan of the Dorian scale! Nice groove!

2: JAZZY

3: This track is chill while also having an endgame feel to it. Love that

4: This is some classic smooth jazz. Floaty!

I really like the jazzy vibe, this seems like it would be part of a game that would be a blast to play!

This was a solid contribution, and so much music written in a short amount of time. Great work overall!

Neon Hights - I like general beat and groove of track, but dislike that random hits of trumpets... sounds disturbing... (in Metropolis, trumpets sound much, much better, I don't know why)
Downtown Shade - nice jazzy tune with lively bassline, very nice.

Wow you got a lot of good music done in just 2 days. Really great and groovy tracks, nice work!

1. Is that a Gusty Garden reference at 0:57 in Neon Heights?

2. This got you a follower, my second all-five-star rating of this jam.

3. Very strong opening with Neon Heights, feels like it would fit right in Mario Kart Wii--almost reminiscent of Moonview Highway, at least in feeling. Downtown Shade is a nice followup, though I think it would be improved by the use of an actual saxophone. That opening piano riff of Midnight Metropolis is catchy as all get-out, which only makes the eventual synth even better. And, in contrast to the other three, the main theme is nice and chill--I love it!

Thank you so much for your kind comment! I had fun writing these so it makes me so happy that you enjoy listening to them. And there wasn't an intentional reference, but I'm sure all my music is influenced by Mario Galaxy to some degree. :) Great ear to pick that out though!
