The art is cute and the lore is nice. I wish there was other ways to progress the story other than to keep sleeping.
What a cute pensive game!!!
Thank God I read the comments or I wouldn't have known what to do D:
Loved the story and ambience, I think it is QUITE good ^_^
The gameplay is interesting, but it's a little too much trial and error. Still, the logic behind almost every level was "take the longest path"... there may be something you can do with that.
LOVED, ABSOLUTELY LOVED the min character's sprite, SO adorable ^___^
Thank you for mooming, she's still so precious ;_;
Very sweet story. Gameplay is simple, but it does its job. Good effort!
Cute Mumei sprite.
I like the small light effect surrounding Mumei.
Good use of DDOLBANG sprites!
The story is nice and I liked having Kronii appear everytime to help Mumei. Cute ending!
Some improvement suggestions:
- Looking at the console I see a lot of errors. Make sure you check them and fix the issues! Most of them were about missing or improper signal connections.
- There was a dialogic error about trying to start a timeline that doesn't exist. Make sure you've tested all your NPC dialogues before shipping your game! XD (I believe it was triggered by one of the two shades that are side by side near the middle of the village)
- Consider putting your game into an aspect ratio fitter control, so that no matter the size of the window, your game displays in the intended aspect ratio. This is important because I originally had the browser window in a square shape and completely missed the timer at the top of the screen as well as having HUGE sprites for Kronii and Shiori when they showed up in dialogue sections.
- I got a funny bug where I reached the memory item after time ran out (apparently I could still walk), so I got to see the memory but then got the "time rewound" message. It still counted as if I got it, which is cool. XD
Good job submitting your game!Very cute! Despite the bugs and the lack of clarity, I really enjoyed the story, very good job on that. And Lil' Mooms was really cute, too.
To future players: Once you're in the large area, just talk to the top-right shade a few times, and sleep in the house a few times. The other shades are buggy and might make you unable to interact.
All that aside, I hope you had fun on this project, nice job! :D
Thanks! Oh I absolutely had fun. I've discovered a love for pixel art that I didn't know I had.
Then there's the writing part. I've only ever written narrative-essay style stories, so having a visual medium to replace the descriptions, while conveying exposition and emotions exclusively through dialogues and expressions was a unique experience.
I don't know how well I managed to execute on those things, but I tried XD
Really like the storytelling in this one, but I do agree with the consensus that it feels like the majority of the map wasn't necessary (which isn't a bad thing, it happens!)
I think if it was just the time trials with some more storytelling, maybe including Shiori and Kronii since they're already present, I think this would be a great submission!
But all things considered, you did a good job on the art, and putting everything together, since it sounds like it was a little last minute. Would be great to see you come back and add some polish and trim or tweak some of the currently unnecessary mechanics . Good work!
Can't promise that I'll come back to it, though I really want to. This time around I had the excuses of limited time and lack of experience, which let me set aside my concerns. But if I come back to it later, I'd want to do the song justice. And for that, I'm gonna need to go on a whole training arc XD
If I do tweak things, it'd mostly be adding storylines for the other shades, and having them affect the mazes. And of course, exploring more of the little side-story Shiorin and Kronii have going on. Maybe different endings if you rely too much on Kronii and she overuses her powers.
I liked the story telling elements of the game. Along with other comments here, I also hit the bug where the interactions stopped working and had to restart. It wasn't clear at all that that sleeping was the main way to progress, which makes the rest of the map kind of a waste as there's no point in walking around and interacting (which causes the soft lock).
Thanks for trying it out, I'm glad people at least liked the story, though it ended up way different that intended XD
So, about the map... this is what happened:
The original plan (that I failed to execute on, partly due to time, largely due to skill-issue) involved you running around and talking to the other shades between your sleep sessions (which would remain the main progression mechanic). Talking to a shade would give you dialogue or action choices that would make the mazes easier or harder.
I kinda had them added since the beginning, but couldn't do anything with them in time. I considered implementing the interaction mechanics during the grace period, but the shades' individual storylines would've ended up lackluster, and introduced countless soft-locks that I would not have had the time to find and fix. So I just left it alone.
Ironically, a soft-lock scenario SOMEHOW made it through, anyway XD
Had to bang my head against the game for 15 minutes before I actually got to the gameplay part, nearly gave up haha. The beginning is still unclear and abit buggy but the gameplay part itself is well thought out. I also got the bug mentioned in the comments where no interaction was possible after interacting with some shadows so yea. Theme of the game was good implemented :D
Thanks for having the patience to try to make it work for that long! My bad on that ;-;
The few people who played during the grace period were able to find the sleeping mechanic, so I thought it didn't need more clarification. But I realize now it's not clear at all XD
I still haven't the slightest idea what's causing the interaction bug, it should NOT be possible :D
No problem! I first found the sleeping mechanic after I sadly encountered the bug where i couldn't interact with anything anymore and after afterward when I only started to sleep I slowly understood I had to talk to the first shadow on the right again. I think i consistently triggered the bug while talking to the one with the "go away with that nasty light" shadow and then trying to talk to others... I guess I was just really unlucky by trying to talk to everyone after some sleep sessions.
I can't really rate the game as I can't play it, or am too dumb to play it.
I talked with the first shade, switched screens to the second screen, talked to another shade, the one with the "..." dialogue and then nothing worked anymore. I could go around, go to the house and click sleep but nothing would happen. I couldn't even talk to other shades or the same shade again. I also didn't find anything else I could do.
I don't know if I just missed the obvious thing I should have done or if there is a bug.
Ah, I didn't make it obvious so that's on me. The darkness doesn't help either...
Just above where you enter the second area, there's a shade (it's the same one, but you can't really tell because they look the same XD)
Talk to him a couple times, and then you get access to the sleep mechanic. Convoluted, I know. Sorry ;-;
Note: When you can't sleep anymore, just go back to talk to him again.
Awesome game but kinda buggy around the edges. Had to restart several times after trying to talk to shades which causes the game to sequence break and locks sleeping out. But the mazes are fun and the story is very cute. Love it <3
First comment, thanks, I kneel! <3
Could you tell me the situations that lock you out? If it's fixable, the grace period is still going (I think?) XD
Yeah basically after reaching the main room when you try to talk to some shades around the corners and then go back to the house and try to go to sleep nothing happens like the button appears and can be pressed but nothing changes for some reason. If you skip the shades and just beeline for the house and do nothing but sleep until the end it works fine!
WTHelly. There should be no connection between those things... 0-0
