  • Absolutely oozing with style. Perfectly fits the retro aesthetic. Challenging but not too frustrating. Very impressed with the level of polish this has, even right down to the cutscenes
  • When I originally saw an email notification saying you joined the jam, I went "no way..." This jam was made for you. I don't think there's anything I can say that you don't already know. Thanks for joining! This was a real treat to play!

How does your submission fit the jam's theme?
Run, jump, and shoot through Grey Leno's twisted digital dimension!

Is it possible to make something like this in game maker???? I really love the aesthetic

Really excellent, especially for a one-week jam, I loved the art and the visual style

Wow, the vibe is unreal man, really liked the game, it's most likely the winner of this game jam :P

Developer

That'd be rad, though I feel like there are a ton of submissions way better than mine haha Thanks for playing!

Very cool and polished 2.5D platforming shooter!
Audio cues are on point and the music is great.
Love the art and the story leading into the gameplay too.
I kept hoping there'd be some kind of homing missile upgrade because I was so bad at running and gunning lol, but I did beat Leno on my first playthrough without running out of lives, so it wasn't too difficult for me in spite of my skill issues.
The minimap helped me a lot. It's not a big map, but I kept getting turned around anyway so including it was definitely a wise choice.
Overall, great game and congratulations on making a cool shooter!

Developer(+1)

Ah man a homing missile upgrade would've been amazing, wish I could've gotten some extra time to make that happen! Yeah the minimap was definitely a crucial addition, another thing I would've loved to have gotten in the original jam version. Thanks for playing!

How did you guys manage to make it look so good in only one week?!

Props to you guys, it's genuinely stunning!

Developer

Thanks!! Staying up late every night with no job definitely helped :')

Incredible visuals! The modeling and music are top-notch, and the game’s controls felt very natural and intuitive! Everything here just feels really well polished, lively, and fun, and it’s incredible to see so much work put into this in just a week’s time! Really great work!

Developer

Thanks sm!

Really awesome art style, I'm impressed by the art for the intro, tho the controls feels rather floaty and the falling speed is pretty broken, like I fall faster if I just fall down from an edge without jumping, and the boss fight took a little too long but was glad I that it didn't restart after a death.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yeah our artist killed it with the all the game's illustrations! Something was left broken with the jumping in the jam version, but I believe I fixed it in the post-jam build. Also added more pickup spawns during the boss fight, which should hopefully speed it up and make it more fair.

Really love the PS1-style visuals and CRT look, it gives the whole game a wild late-night TV vibe. The explosions and effects look super punchy in the screenshots and GIF – feels like it must be very satisfying to play.

Developer

Thank you! I was definitely going for that kind of "stay up really late while playing some old obscure game you could never beat when you were younger" vibe haha

Hi! I played your game and wanted to share some feedback.

I really enjoyed the old school 3D visual style, the post processing looks great and gives the game a strong identity. The story cutscenes look stylish and very polished. The game also reminded me of Metal Slug especially during weapon pickups and defeating enemies. The music fits the overall tone really well and adds a lot to the atmosphere.

As for the downsides I think the heavy blur from the post processing might be uncomfortable for players with weaker eyesight since it can be hard to see what is happening on the screen. The enemies also hit pretty hard during the first encounter while the player cannot do much until they find another weapon.

Overall the game left a very nice impression. Thank you!

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah I can see the CRT effect being intense. I tried toning it down a bit in the post-jam update, but if I had even more time I'd look into adding an option to just disable it (although it's kinda part of the aesthetic haha).

An amazing show from Grey Leno and I spent like half of the game not knowing that you could throw duck bombs and dash until I actually paid attention to the controls but that's on me. This game also gives off heavy Earthworm Jim vibes which I appreciate

Developer(+1)

Thanks! Yeah, EWJ was a huge inspiration as I love that game. Yeah, controls weren't broadcasted enough in the jam version, so I made sure to rectify that in an update.

I enjoyed it, loved the intro art and music. only issue was it froze on game over.

did you make your own crt effect? i  liked the way it looked

Developer(+1)

Thank you! Weird that it froze on game over, was it a full hang or did the buttons not work? No, I didn't make the CRT effect. It's an asset I used called VHS Pro!

I had the downloaded ver. on windows 11. it was full no input response, i don't think it was a full hang because the background seemed to animate.

Great work as always SodaRaptor and team! Really felt like a lost PS1 platformer.

Developer(+1)

Thanks! The subtle filters definitely help

Definitely a very cool side scroller shooter! I do think the game should let you run and shoot if you hold down the shoot button like in Metal Slug instead of making you sit still, and I feel like going back to the pistol after you're further in the level is a bit rough.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! We did some light playtesting and found that being able to aim at some enemies (like the turret head) was hard to do while moving so I ended up foregoing the Metal Slug route and leaning more Earthworm Jim where you sit still while shooting. But I can see it being preferential. Yeah for the boss I definitely should've had some more pickups spawn during the fight!
