I was genuinely considering backing this game on patreon and donating for my copy of the game, but seeing the additions of 0.9.0 has changed my mind. I don't like any of it. The new tutorial is such a boring slog that you aren't even allowed to skip. It literally teleports you to the spot it wants and doesn't let you play the game until you sit there and do what it wants as it wants. Why is there no "I played the game before skip tutorial pls " button?? I don't like having to do stupid puzzles when before I just pressed a button. I don't like buying fuses that die immediately. I don't like paying for batteries to drive my ATV that breaks down and needs tires now. I don't like spending forever triangulating a signal only for it to vanish. It isn't more skill based its just more annoying. I don't like having my floppy drive fail 100 times in a row to gather the hash codes. Most of all I hate hate hate HATE the new controls. They're insanely clunky and are a massive downgrade. What was wrong with the ALT key giving me ALTernate states of action? At the very least the game NEEDS a legacy controls toggle.

I guess in a tl;dr: I cannot stand the direction the game is going with this update and I cannot in good faith give any money or positive reinforcement for the massive enshitification that has occurred. If/when these things are fixed I will gladly come back as I love the 0.8.2 experience.

(1 edit) (+39)(-8)

You know its called an "unstable test" right, like this is just a test of new features and functions and yes the difficulty is way way too high atm and people are making plenty of noise about it and the game being still in development meaning that this is all subject to change and you being like "I was going to pay for the game that I can play for free but now a test version of the game upset me so no promise money for you" is kinda entitled don't you think?

Support if you want too but this is a TEST version of the game that yes does deserve some criticism and much tweaking. In the mean time play 0.8.2 were the suffering is less if you don't want to help develop this iteration and come back when the kinks have been worked out, maybe then you can think about spending money on the hard work you have enjoyed.

(+11)(-3)

They re just gaslighting everyone.
Its a fallacy when they say "I was going to pay for the game that I can play for free but now a test version of the game upset me so no promise money for you"
If they had the money they would have paid for it a long time ago...
Mostly are just children without maturity, spewing bullshit over the internet for attention and just for lulz.

(+27)(-2)

Echoing what Kato said a smidge, but you need to realize that this game is in an alpha state meaning the game is nowhere near finished.  This means you can give feedback to try and help the devs course correct instead of acting like the game is completely dead and unsalvageable because something is over tuned or a just a bad change.

(+15)

Fr. I ain't a AAA game. One mistake should not make you quit, and if you don't want to give them money now, then just wait until it gets fixed, because it will, and soon hopefully.

(+8)(-11)

i was actually considering backing the patreon for a bit but i wanted to wait for the new build. and i cant even get past the tutorial because i cant wrap my head around the new controls. remembering "hold e to do what. press e to do how. wait how do i throw again?" is a lot more annoying imo then "hey im in grab mode. the e button grabs now".

and it sucks because i want to see the new stuff before saying how i feel about it

but i cant because of the new controls and the tutorial

maybe this update should of been split between the new content and the new controls. and not just lumping it all on us at once with not even a passing mention of a changelog eh?

i dont think its all doom and gloom just yet though

(+15)(-6)

You can skip the tutorial quite easily by just grabbing the keycard in the first area for the door, breaking the boxes in front of the second door, walking past the signal station, and then fixing the transformer. However the game in 0.9 has changed a LOT and you're going to be very confused if you don't do the tutorial to get acquanted with the controls, the new signal pinging system, the server & transformer minigames, the way upgrades for servers & the station work, the tapedeck machine, etc.

Maybe hers is just good at the game, but hers hasn't had an issue with running out of fuses, battery power, or even struggling with the new minigames. It's all rather simple and is intended to make the gameplay more involved, which it accomplishes when hers plays. And the controls are like this to make them more simple for new players and because the item interaction programming got massively overhauled. It's easier on the hands and more intuitive, with the option of toggling between what press & holding e do.

(1 edit) (+14)(-11)

It's a bit disappointing to see some people get so pissy about the game getting more content. Yeah it adds more challenge to the game, the last build was really easy to cheese daily tasks. Would you prefer the game to stagnate and not get new content?

In regards to the new controls, the newest version isn't even out for the public, it's an unstable patreon test build... they're gonna change stuff about it, likely daily. If they hear that a large amount of players prefer the previous controls, they may implement a legacy controls option, who knows?

At the end of the day, it's their game, and if they wanna add new challenges, or new controls, then they can do it to their hearts content. I'll keep supporting them because I love VOTV, and I want to see it grow and prosper.

(+7)(-6)

uhhh. it is out to the public. has been since halloween

(+14)(-3)

Maybe wait for the stable release, this is a test build for feedback only, it's not meant to "sell" you on the game.

(+9)(-28)

It's hilarious that, reading the comments, the only retort anyone has to your justified complaints is "erm, it's a beta test so like, erm, be patient bucko!" As though an update singlehandedly destroying any good feelings you had for the game isn't a horrifically bad thing for the devs.

(+5)(-3)

(+18)

Er...  Yes?  The fact that it's a shadow build released explicitly for testing is an important thing to consider.  While feedback is important, it's a highly unstable build which was shadow dropped, and most of the concerns brought up in OP's comment aren't even intentional; a lot of it is bugs (like the fuse problem), or unbalanced things that exist with temporary, unfinished values.  This is all explained and presented to players directly.

Imagine you bake a cake, and someone wants to eat your cake before it's finished.  You tell them, explicitly, "Hey, the cake is unfinished, the ingredients aren't all in it yet, this cake is not at all representative of what the final cake is meant to look like and you probably won't have a good experience".  You then eat the cake despite receiving those warnings, and then you talk about how shit and horrible the cake is and how you don't care at all about the cake anymore, despite the fact you willingly chose to eat the cake after it was explained to you that the cake was not at all finished and you are definitely not going to like the cake.

(+9)

the entitlement is making me cringe. ITS A BETA TEST.

(1 edit) (+25)(-5)

Have never seen more people cry and moan over a free update to their free unfinished alpha game. I cannot fathom how this update has singlehandedly ruined the game for people unless they are picky children with zero patience. They are adding new content and slowly polishing as they go, be glad they are letting you play with that progress.

(+14)(-2)

For real, the entitlement is nutty. Criticism is one thing (and there is much to criticize), but it's bizarre to me how many people are having tantrums like particularly spoiled children over this.

If you can't tolerate an undercooked build... maybe don't play the version that has the word test in all capitals in the title? If you really don't like the test version, drop your specific critiques to help the devs cook and go back to 0.8.2. The histrionics about how "ITS ALL RUINED NOW!!1!" is just embarrassing.

(+8)(-2)

A lot of it feels very similar to the idiotic "customer is always right" attitude certain people seem to have while shopping, where they threaten to "Take their business elsewhere" if they don't immediately get everything their way. Like, seriously, it's fine if you don't like certain aspects of the test version, that's why it's here. To find out what the players like and dislike in advance. Threatening to not play anymore does nothing but make you look like an entitled fool.

(+9)(-1)

Yeah fr. Like, I have my own gripes with the update, but I'm not throwing the game out for good. I'm probably just going to shelve it for a bit until next update fixes it.

(+11)(-1)

Let's go point by point here and talk facts.

The new tutorial: I believe this was rebuilt in order to alleviate the problems that were seen when new streamers came to the game. I saw a few people get confused about what to do and just never come back to the game. The idea is that forcing people to go through the steps means they'll *have* to do the actions to learn the actions. However, this only works for a certain kind of person and most of the people who have already played plenty of VotV *aren't* that kind of person. The "locked in place" bit of the tutorial is only very specific steps which you *can* skip if you know ahead of time not to click on certain question marks. In the end, I agree that a "I know how to play" version of the tutorial is needed though, tbh, with the amount of things to learn in this game, I don't really know what the best way of building a tutorial for this game is... and I say that as a game dev! Shit's hard. I don't think the current tutorial *is* the answer but I don't have much of a better one.

I don't like having to do stupid puzzles when before I just pressed a button: This is why there's a toggle on the save to turn the puzzles on or off. Personally, I got so fast at math (sub 4 seconds!) that I find the new puzzles refreshing but I also love that there's an option to turn the ones you don't like off. That'll be me and pipe game. It's easy but the controls for it make it a slog to play.

I don't like buying fuses that die immediately: This is a bug and I don't think the gameplay aspect of it is very interesting in this version. I assume something more interesting about the fuses will eventually get added in.

I don't like paying for batteries to drive my ATV that breaks down and needs tires now: This seems to have come from the fact that the ATV upgrades add so much QoL... I think MrDrNose may have wanted to rebalance the starting point of the ATV to be more detrimental so the upgrade path was longer and felt more rewarding. I, too, think the ATV battery is in a bad state but I could see it *eventually* being something more fun and interesting if, say, neutral-rolling the ATV recharged it or some other method of recharging it was available. Early game, 150 points for a replacement battery feels like entirely too much and I say that as a guy who sells all the trash on 2 floors of the base for 2k points. As for tires and other maintenance, I could see this stuff becoming interesting down the line but if you're a heavy ATV user early game, it does need rebalance work. Maybe if it comes with a spare and you've got a couple more in the utility closet alongside some ATV batteries (like how 8.2c added a bunch of stuff to the upstairs utility room) this could all be resolved as "feeling bad" to "feeling like something to prepare for in the later game."

I don't like spending forever triangulating a signal only for it to vanish: This is a couple of things. First, you gotta realize you can't fail signals anymore, which means some other bit of this has to be the failure/challenge. That's where "if you're too slow, it disappears" comes in; it is the new challenge which can also be upgraded via multiple pathways as you get money and pay for the upgrades. Secondly, signals sell worse than trash in the early game. I believe you're not really supposed to do signals until you do the *other* things you can do to make money, use that money to upgrade your stuff, then get signals rolling. Also keep in mind that there are bugs related to those towers breaking too much.

It isn't more skill based its just more annoying: It's annoying early on, I agree, but it does feel more skill based than the previous method because you're balancing "which radars do you drag vs call to your location" as you're balancing out actions against the cooldowns. It's a game of speed that you can fail but at least when you get it all done on time, you're guaranteed a signal instead of an RNG failure like before.

I don't like having my floppy drive fail 100 times in a row to gather the hash codes: This is another one that I think is supposed to be upgraded-related. Stability discs seem to not be present anymore but I could see their return if they were multi-use and prevented the hash code failure. Turning the management of satellites from "up or down" to "maintaining a health that lets you do your work faster" greatly interests me and I believe is the direction this is going... but once again, the starting point is simply too much to wait for. I think this little bit could easily see some rebalancing before the stable 0.9 release.

Most of all I hate hate hate HATE the new controls. They're insanely clunky and are a massive downgrade. What was wrong with the ALT key giving me ALTernate states of action? At the very least the game NEEDS a legacy controls toggle: I'm with you on this 100%. I completely understand why the new scheme exists (it's because of user testing and seeing people be unable to understand the ALT method on top of seeing constant problems trying to interact with multiple objects that have a different # of interaction choices and how it resets your interaction choice) but for everyone who has played for a long time or prefers to not have to hold keys down for single-shot actions, we should have been given the choice to revert. Personally, I think the true answer is adding "hold" "double tap" and "modifier" key bindings, which is a massive undertaking but one I always champion in games that have more than 5 controls to worry about. If I can just replace "hold R" with "T" I'd do that in a heartbeat. That being said, this shadow drop seems like the perfect moment to see "hmm, is this really better?" With the outcry over it, I'm curious to see how the stable release responds.

In any case, the point of all of this is (hopefully) a reasonable explanation for why things ended up the way they did and a hopeful outlook in where it means the direction of this game is going.

(+2)

I was relieved to find out that the coordinate towers constantly going down and fuses shorting out are completely unintended. I seriously thought that RNG was taking them out sporadically until I opted out of degradation for my save, only for them to still consecutively go down one-after-another every night. I think a good implementation would be lowering the fuse cost, requiring at least one fuse for the towers to operate, while multiple fuses can serve the purpose of improving triangulation speed, and have them fail only from lighting strikes or a fixed story/random event that forces the player to go investigate.

The ATV I see really no gripes with outside of still requiring fuel. Hope DrNose adds an upgrade that improves fuel efficiency in a future update, because it's a pain to keep having to buy cans, and the only things you can burn in the furnace for a good return on fuel are organic materials. The rest of the maintenance is actually great, I feel like everything is more interactive and I'm being rewarded for progression with the manual module installations and ATV upgrades.

Ditto on the control scheme, though. I really, REALLY want the radial menu back. It just feels more accessible and I got use to it being part of the game as a whole, and it doesn't help that certain functions still utilize it in an awkward and suboptimal fashion.

(+5)(-3)

I NEEDED the tutorial, even though I'm familiar with the gameplay, so much has changed for this version its truly necessary, if you had skipped it I'm sure you would be lost too, games like votv rely on its players to learn the loop and pay attention to the tutorial to understand the game and not rage quit when they cant get the floppy disk into the computer. so personally, I love the new gameplay, its more immersive and I'm a big fan of games that require a lot of work and planning, maybe because I have nothing better to do in life. and I understand the need to change the controls, considering "Hold alt+ R do this! Hold Alt+ click for this! Hold alt AND E AND click for this!!" is really confusing for average players, and simplifying the controls was a big step in making the game more accessible, but it's a very unstable build, it obviously needs balancing and fixing and a lot of improvement on the controls, but one bad test version shouldn't put you off,  stay on the stable version, its completely fine to wait for a stable alpha, but I feel like this is just a teaser to keep us going while they work on something I'm sure will put you back on, no game is perfect, and every game has undesirable bits of gameplay, but without that would it really be fun?

(1 edit) (+4)

In regards to the ATV battery, I've been thinking about it, and whether or not they make it rechargeable or not, I think a possible solution would be to make it so the battery doesn't affect whether or not you can start the ATV. Like say it has an alternator, but it only maintains enough charge in the battery to start the vehicle- other things like lights, turbo, radio, map upgrade, etc. would stop being able to function without it. So you'd still be able to use it if the battery went, but at reduced functionality. I suppose they could also add something along the lines of having a chance the engine doesn't start right away and you need to turn the ignition a few more times to start it, but it always starts within a set number of tries.
The controls, the only real issues I have are 1: The "press E" and "hold E" functionality should be swapped, 2: There needs to be a more intuitive way to throw held items or pick up other items while holding something, and 3: Bring back the old push/pull system. That weird "fishing line" system doesn't particularly work very well. You can't easily rotate large objects without a high chance of completely tipping them over, most of the time trying to pull a tall object upright  just causes the whole thing to slide along the floor, and trying to life the bottom of an object up to lift it onto a curb or something seems next to impossible.
I actually kind of appreciated having to go through the new tutorial as they made a few changes to the game that I otherwise might not have been able to figure out on my own.

(+4)(-1)

Everybody calm down. This is just a TEST version. It is RUSHED, it is UNFINISHED, it WILL get better.

Personally, I played for a few (in-game) days, didn't like what I saw and quit (until 0.9 stable comes out). I urge all of you to do the same.

(1 edit) (+4)(-9)

itch.io community really showing it's full of morons that don't know what the phrase "TEST BUILD" means. Damn dude it's no wonder the devs don't interact with people here.

You shouldn't be playing this unless you're testing it for bugs anyway. It's called a TEST build for TESTERS for a reason.

TEST build for TESTERS for TESTING the game, not PLAYING it. The game is NOT FINISHED and should not be judged as a finished game. Is any of this getting through to you? God damn.

(1 edit) (+6)(-5)

Dude, seriously there is no need to be a dick. This game IS FOR TESTING, which literally means to give your damn feedback on it to see what should be changed. This guy wasn't being mean or rude (which you shouldn't be as this version is broken) he was just giving his opinion on what should be changed on a TESTING version. So there is no need to be a jerk to him for doing exactly what they are meant for and being polite about it.

(3 edits) (+1)(-5)

Nah You kinda glazing OP Too. But I can see a gaslight a mile away.
While he wasn't a dick at first glance, we can see him gaslighting by mentioning: ''I was considering backing this game up but..'' my brother in christ, if you werent sold in the first 10 versions of the game then you are a broke ass and just wanted an excuse. Also using and creating unnecessary words like ''enshitfication''. Really necessary?
Irrelevant information but serves the purpose of his mental gymnastics to Garner people to his side
So, I feel its pretty valid that the guy above is being a dick. Fight Fire with fire and show the underhanded scumbaggery
OP Is malding, trying to cope and trying hard to believe that this 0.9.0 is the PLAYABLE version....
Anyways, The Devs are already aware of all the problems(We have a forms for that). Because unlike some clowns on Itch.io here, We have decent and serious people helping, suggesting, and actually contributing to the game. Not crying, complaining and doing jack shit over the forums while they do nothing with their life and just complain
