It took me far too long to play this game, mainly because I've already seen two people play through it live, but I really wanted to finish it before the end of the jam.
Yes, the navigation is a little confusing, yes, you can miss the flashlight, yes, you can drop an object with a right click and not realize it because it doesn't make a sound when it falls...
But let's talk about emotion for a second, oké?
This ending touches me, it speaks to me, there's something that works, there's something beautiful about it. The atmosphere is great, the stop-motion aspect works perfectly, and I'll be here to see your next creations. keep it up !
I think the previosu comment sums it up quite nicely, It's quite hard to know what you have to do in ceirtan parts of the game, which can sometimes really lose the player and just feels frustrating.
Only thing i'd add is that the soundesign could have been a bit better, the interact sounds are really good, but the train sounds especially the wheels going over something sound was super annoying, for sounds that are gonna repeat alot always use multiple different sound clips and make them randomly loop with slightly different pitches. Also a walking sound would have been really good, much more immersive, even though the train is quite loud, I think a quiet but noticable footstep sound would have made the game much more immersive.
I really like the graphics, I think they look cool but my fps would drop occasionally and it was annoying, I am guessing you used a particle system for the fog/dust that sometimes makes it into the train? Unities particle system is actually quite bad and unoptimized and its better to avoid using so much.
The game is quite good but it is just really slow paced cause its not really clear what the player has to do, I really like the style it looks super rad!!!!
You should also play and rate my game roughneck, it will change your life and you will get 1 milion dollars in 2 weeks!
Play and rate to affirm 1 milion dollars in 2 weeks! (Refunds not accepted)
Thank you for playing! It's actually a custom volumetrics system that gets unloaded when it's away from the player. The problem is I don't unload the rest of the train so there were definitely a fair bit of performance improvements that I could have made. I've already made improvements to the directionless feeling by only changing the dialogue to more or less tell the player where to go, so a lot of the frustration could have just been fixed by better writing. Thanks for your feedback! I don't know if this game is worth continuing as is but I really like the style of a Tim Burton like game so maybe
really good overall. nice aesthetic. nice environment. very confusing story and gameplay but still worth a play.
I think the game has a very nice aesthetic. The choice to make most things in the game animate at a lower FPS is very unique; it gives everything a stop-motion-like feel. The "characters" (the manikins) themselves give me a 90s CG vibe, which I really dig. 90s CG is one of my favorite aesthetics, and I also love trains, so I think it’s a very cool environment.
That said, I think the game needs more work in terms of player guidance and visibility. At the beginning, I was a bit stuck on what I was supposed to do, so I was just walking around in circles until I realized there was a book on a seat. I think if the attendant had said something like “Please take your seat with the others!” I would’ve stayed in that area and found the book more quickly. After getting the book, you receive a key, but I think the key should either be automatically given to the player or make a sound when it drops, because I didn’t notice that I had missed it at first.
Some of the environments are also quite dark. Of course, the flashlight helps with that, but even the flashlight itself is located in a dark spot, which can make it tricky to find.
Either way, I did finish the game and I really like its style. I just think improvements could definitely be made in terms of guiding the player better and improving visibility, or at least designing the environment in a way that naturally draws the player toward important objects.
Thank you so much for playing my game! I maybe spent more time on the aesthetic of the game than I should have, I am not very good at designing gameplay and game loops themself so I really appreciate the advice and opinions on how I can improve! The real question is on if it's worth continuing this project or moving on 😅
Continue! More trains!
I really liked the style atmosphere the game had, the claymation thing worked really well I'd say. I struggled a bit with finding some of the stuff because of how everything is laid out all back and forth but that's mostly just me. Had me saying "ATTENDAWNT!?" and searching for that guy whenever I couldn't figure out what to do. The story made sense at the start with an expository statement telling you why you're there but by the end I wasn't to sure what the dealio was if that makes sense.
Overall, it had the spooky. 10/10.
Thank you so much for playing! This was only the first stage of 5 that I had completely written out but unfortunately couldn't change the story in time to only make it work for the first stage standalone 😭
I'll try and clean up the directions of the game so you always know where to go and what to do! I've got some studying to do!
Good game but no stretching camera so f*ck you
I take my loss with grace 😂
The gameplay was a bit confusing, it was hard to understand where to go in some cases, and the flashlight, necessary for reaching the end of the game was also hidden in the dark on the ground, completely missable. The concept wasn't too bad
Thank you so much for playing! I'm not very good at making game experiences yet, all my skills are in what you saw 😅 but I appreciate you taking the time to try what I had! I'll try to clean up what's here the moment the jam is over!
Ok so there's a lot of good here! First I love the kinda stop motion vibe of the animation, it's both creepy and nostalgic! The whole train was really cool with a good atmosphere too.
My main gripe is that the game is very very dark, so the items are almost impossible to see. I also ended up lost in the generator section and eventually gave up after 20 minutes of wandering. ^^' As for the items, it took about an hour wandering around without understanding where I was supposed to go, until I found the passenger maniffest: maybe having the attendant tell us "please, there's a free seat on row (whatever)" would prompt the players to go check there, and putting the manifest either on the seat or making it lit up a little more so it's easier to spot.
As for the key the attendant gave me, I assumed it was added directly to my inventory and didn't check the floor, maybe a sound cue would help? Like if I heard the key hit the floor, I would pick it up.
Also making the flashlight brighter when it is on the floor would help, as walked past it at first?
Overall a fun experience, I will try to get back to it later to try and finish it.
It has a lot of potential so I hope it helps!
Thank you so much for playing! Those are all things that I would love to fix right away! Unfortunately I'm not very good at game pacing or game loops yet but I'm really happy you took the time to play my game nonetheless!
I hope it didn't come off as me only complaining about it! I did enjoy a lot of things about it and it just needs a little polish!
Wow I love the concept. I struggled a lil with the puzzles but thats mostly my fault lol. Very unique mechanic and very smart way of conveying a story. I love it. This is probably my favorite game in the jam!
That was a very cool game! The teleporting carts was done very smoothly, I could only tell I got teleported by the ticking sfx at the end of one of them. I think it got a little confusing with the directions, that or I just wasn't paying attention to the dialogue enough, I tend to do that. In the end, I really liked the layout of this game.
I ran into 2 small bugs:
Oop, both of those should be really easy to fix! Thanks for letting me know and thanks for playing!
Do you have any suggestions on how I can improve the guidance?
off the top of my head, I got no clue XD
I mean my game also struggles hard with guidance so Im not the best at figuring it out either XD
Creepy for sure! Very well done :)
Really cool game! I really liked the aesthetics! Especially the animations and the little guys!
I wish the game was clearer on its goals, like where to go, when to pickup the flashlight for example. But the game is really cute, and I really liked the atmosphere for the ending!
Great job! especially for a solo team
Performance was a bit chuggy for me but I love the vibe of the game! The manequins are the creepy its so great
Couldnt really figure out how to unlock the doors. Im not sure if the flashlight was broken for me
