Not too shabby, especially for your first 3D game. Two things I did notice, pretty long load times and the movement doesn't have any momentum. All in all, I would say it's a fun game

Developer(+1)

Thank you!
Believe it or not, momentum and movement that "felt more fun" were on the list of things I had hoped to add before the end of the jam.
But they were negotiable so long as it "mostly worked" and "was technically a game" ๐Ÿ˜…
I'm still pretty happy with how it turned out in spite of how low I set the bar, but there's definitely a lot of room for improvement on my next jam. Thanks for playing and leaving a comment :)

It is a fun platformer, I had fun playing it. The Grim reaper particle effects were cool. Great Job!

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much for playing and leaving a comment! I liked the particle effects a lot too, but it does cause some performance hiccups, so I'll use them a bit more sparingly next time ๐Ÿ˜…
I'm glad you had fun though! :

fantastic!!!! ngl the ghouls at the end scared me but this was very fun!!! i would play more. i only got more jumps each time lol

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! I'm glad you had fun, and I might make more of it sometime in the future, but it'll have to wait a while I think.
I put some serious effort into this, but tbh I really struggled with level design on the platforming sections.
Luckily, I was able to keep it short and add some extra polish in a few spots to keep it interesting (I hope it helped anyway ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคž)
Regardless, thanks for playing it and for the positive feedback!

P.S. there are fireball upgrades if the ghouls get you at the end, but most people seem to beat that section without getting any of the higher-tier level ups so, meh ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

realized I should have commented here and not on the main page lol

lovely platformer and great adherence to the theme! I'm miserable at platformers so getting to have 5 double jumps came in clutch lmao

Developer(+1)

All good, I'm glad you played it and had fun! Thanks for leaving a comment in either spot :)
I'm also not great at platformers, and I don't think the really basic movement system I had in this game lends itself naturally to precise movements, so giving the player some bonuses when they die works really well thematically and in terms of difficulty.

I liked the rouge like mechanics. I will say the game froze up pretty good a couple times. Seemed to be happening when it was loading the other parts of the level. Good use of the theme and cool concept.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, it's the checkpoints that do little fireworks. The particle emitters seem to be the culprit (especially with chibi death doing his little escape cloud thing)
I tested it a bit, but didn't realize how bad it was on some computers until I saw someone else streaming it. One of my big learning moments in this game jam ended up being that I need to put some more effort into optimization on things that look like they're fine, but actually aren't.

Regardless, thank you for playing my game! I'm glad you enjoyed the rogue elements and had a bit of fun!

Submitted(+1)

I liked the rogue mechanics, very nice work :)

Developer

Thank you so much!
Yeah, I wasn't sure they would work, but they mostly do :)

Submitted(+1)

What a great game id love it if you would check my game out aswell!!!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you so much!
I'd love to check out your game, but I am a little nervous about downloading games off the internet.
I don't suppose it's too much to ask for a version that I can play in a browser?
FWIW, I think you're allowed to update the files post-submission when adding new OS/browser support (people have stated as much on the ducky dev discord server)

If that's too much to ask, I'll still play it, but it'll take me a little longer to do it. I'm sorry in advance for being a weirdo about this sort of thing, I thought most game jam games would have browser support for some reason ๐Ÿ˜… (This is my first time in a game jam and I'm still kind of getting used to cultural norms in this kind of environment)

interesting take, I could see this doing well with a little more polish, but you got a good bit done in the timeframe!

GG

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much!
Yeah I feel like there's a bit of potential, but a full game would take a little something more. Not sure what exactly, but something lol
Regardless, thank you for playing and leaving a comment!

I liked the game. Very clever with the death upgrade system. You can just walk for a bit then kill yourself for an upgrade. Would have been cool to keep a death counter. Make that as a scoring system. Jumping felt a little funny. Think its the case that I expect the character to jump fowards a little more then it does. But I also suck at platformers.

Big take away is this fits the Theme extremely well. Death is an Opportunity, meaning that something pops up, and you should either take it or not. Able to die and having the Opportunity to upgrade or respawn checkpoint to my opinion fits it. I couldn't give theme 5 starts as I couldn't see the game being possible without upgrades. And I see it as you don't have to die, but it'll most likely make your life harder. And once the ghost came in, think that made it impossible to do.

Also, think I found 2 bugs. One I don't know, once the ghosts pop up, they are there till the game is completed. Don't know if that is on purpose or not. And when I got the fireball upgrade, think I also got the slowdown upgrade with it.

But I manage to complete the game and enjoyed, did take me a bit with the spiral.

A very thoughtful review! Thanks for playing my game and I appreciate the kind words!

I did make sure that you can beat it without any upgrades (but the vortex part did end up being harder then I meant for it to be, and a few double jumps go a long way to making it easier)
The vortex part is painfully-slow, or if you look carefully, there's a single platform that goes from the last light green area all the way to the last checkpoint before the ghost part. I've seen at least one person beat the final ghost area without any upgrades, but it's partially luck-based.
There is a bullet-time related bug though. I didn't notice until after it was posted, but I was debugging the bullet time upgrade (last upgrade I implemented before moving on to sfx) and you actually start out with it  (Forgot to remove it from your starting build ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ)
The ghosts are supposed to be removed from play at the end though and while it did work (at least once) before I submitted it, it may have been broken by something else? It probably doesn't matter too much but they are supposed to disappear.

Thank you for the super review though!
I, for sure, have a lot of feedback items on my mental checklist from this game jam now that I've done one lol

Submitted(+1)

Just earned a 5 star on Theme. I wasn't very sure if it could be done without upgrades. But if someone was able to do it without upgrade. Then I find that it perfectly fits the meaning of the theme

Developer(+1)

By all means, rate it whatever you think is fair!
But I agree with your mentality and I really wanted the game to have bonuses that were actually bonuses and not prerequisites for beating the game. In this case, it's the subtle difference between "death is required" and the actual given theme of the jam :)

Nice! Save it for Wednesday though :

Ah, my apologies. Sfx were last minute and could use some mastering. (Options for controlling volume didn't make it on before time to submit) But I'm glad you had fun in spite of the limitations!

Submitted(+1)

Pretty cool game ! I love what you made here by mixing platforming and rogue mechanics !

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! I wanted to see what a game like that would feel like and if it would work. It kind of does, but I'll rest on it and see how it feels in a few weeks ๐Ÿ˜…
Thanks for playing it and leaving a kind comment! :)

Submitted(+1)

It works really well, I think it got good potential !

Awesome game idea! I had some difficulty figuring out the platforms' movement patterns, but overall great game, i really enjoyed it :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you so much! Yeah, looking at it again, I think I made that second part a bit too tough ๐Ÿ˜…
(Insert "level design is my passion" meme here) ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

rogue like platformer is sick idea and you did justice to it!

Developer

Thank you so much! I tried my best and I think it turned out pretty well overall. I do think there's probably a bit more that could be done to really do justice to the idea... but it'd take more than the 4 days I had lol ๐Ÿ˜…

Submitted(+1)

Very sick, simple game very good execution. Just a small thing, when the checkpoint is reached, the game lags for a seconds, might as well fix that. But everything else is good, well done

Developer

Thank you! I appreciate the positive feedback. I did notice the lag too, and I know it is because of the particle emitters (which I probably used too heavily at a couple points) and I can probably get rid of it by changing the shape of the particles. I let it slide originally because it was pretty minor and seems to straighten itself out after the first checkpoint.
Are we allowed to make changes to the game post jam? I guess this would be a really minor change, so maybe it's fine?
Regardless though, thank you for playing my game and I'm glad you liked it! :)

Submitted(+1)

I got him! haha

When I learned that you get upgrades when you die and hit a checkpoint I started stacking on extra jumps and movement speed so I can reach the first checkpoint until I can basically fly around, I was flying in the ghost chase event, I had fun!

Developer(+1)

My primary goal for my first game jam was to just make a game. The second goal was to make it work fairly well. Finally, I'd consider it a matter of bonus points if it also happened to be fun, which I was not convinced that it would be lol! ๐Ÿ˜…
Needless to say, I'm glad you had fun and also thanks for leaving a review!
