Neat game! I'm always impressed when someone can get a 2D game running in Unreal, but this works just great. I really enjoy the animations of the characters and the teleporting to your past self mechanic. It also feels really great to slash through bad guys. Awesome work!

This ended up being the last game I played of all the entries. And I can say that Xanderjam 5 went out with a bang! This game is loaded with fun features and challenging gameplay. The art and animations are some of my favorite out of all 24 entries! The music and sound effects fit perfectly.

The game crashed on me about half way through the first time around, but had no problems in my 2nd run through. The teleportation mechanic was really well executed and added so much to the game. The variable jump seemed so subtle at first but ended up being a  necessary mechanic to get comfortable with. Of course, I love the presence of check points too! I guess my only critique would be for more of the game. I think some of the puzzles and enemy interactions could be spread out and just have more of them. That's really all I can come up with is I want more of this to play!! :)

My time was 6:20. I might have stood around on a couple of occasions not realizing I was being timed lol. I will be putting together a devlog and including my favorites from the jam. This game will get another playthrough in the video, so we'll work on that finish time ;)

Seriously great job on everything. What a way for me to end the jam experience!

Wow thank you for your comment :)

Sadly the crashes happen because of a wrong packaging option. I already fixed the issue, but I'll upload the updated version when voting ends :)

Intruder!

Awesome graphics and music/sounds!

Here's a couple things I noticed though:

It was cool to run fast but slowing down during an attack or something felt a bit off. Not sure if this is required for the gameplay, maybe it is.

As already mentioned, having multiple kinds of enemies was a good way to stir up the gameplay.

The puzzles were pretty straightforward. I think there may be two ways for these (just my two cents): either make them more complex (with a difficulty ramp up etc.) or execution-based (like some Mario Maker levels perhaps? so that you can try and speedrun these). Also, some kind of indication which button does what would be nice (at least if going for complex puzzles).

The game crashed once but it ran just fine on the second try. My time was 5:20-5:30-ish.

Overall, I liked the game, wouldn't mind to play some more levels!

Developer

Yeah, the attack animation is something I would rework. I drew the character first, and then changed the gameplay, so the animation doesn't fit the play style.

Good take on puzzles. The ones that are present now would serve as introduction to more complex and fleshed out mechanics, but I didn't have time left to implement them :D

Thanks for your feedback!

It took me six minutes, but I wish it took me 20 ... I don't mean I wish I was worse at the game, but I want more of it! This was a blast to play and I hope you keep developing it. The clone and transport mechanic was cool, but it felt like I used it for the same puzzle solution in each new room. I'm sure with more time you'd come up with even more clever and enjoyable uses. I like a lot about this game. The flow is nice. The movement feels good. The music and sfx are just right, but I'm going to leave some feedback because I do hope this becomes a bigger project.

  • Moving so fast as a ninja feels great, but I'd like a couple more options ... a roll, a wall jump for sure, a back flip or double jump! This character was a joy to control, so I wish I had a few more options for freedom of movement.
  • Bigger hitboxes. Gimme some big ol' juicy hitboxes on my sword swing. I didn't feel very powerful.
  • I like the two different enemy types requiring different attacks, but I think you could have separated them even more with distinctive colors.
  • The animations that are in the game are awesome, so I'd love to see more in a future update.
  • You're scene transition doesn't compete before the player has control of the character and the other instances are acting, so I would sometimes die in room transitions because I'd walk into something or get killed by an active enemy I didn't even know was there yet. Not a big deal with generous checkpoints, and this is a jam game after all, but I did pickup on that a few different times.

Overall. Great entry and really impressive work for a solo dev entry. As Ernani said below, you blended action and puzzles really well.

Thank you so much for your in depth feedbacks, I'm really happy you liked the game :)

I thought about adding more movement options. I feel you because when play testing I often wished I was able to wall jump or double jump, however I know those options would have introduced some bugs and more play testing would have been required.

The game was something different when I started the jam. Then I drew the character and his animations and I decided to turn it into a fast paced platformer. The attack animation doesn't fit the play style, but I didn't have time to redraw it. That's also why I decided to give the option to slowly adjust your position when attacking. If I keep developing the game, I will definitely change it to a running attack in order to keep the flow going.

That's a good point on enemy colours. I used the same shades of red to indicate danger, but some differences would have been better.

Also a good point. I wanted to keep the action going, but I was a bit too cheeky with the level design (especially the pit with the electric wires right next to the spawn point).

Thanks again :)

Thank you, and good time!

The controls, specially airborne, are a bit clunky, but the game felt fun. The game crashes just after discovering the teleport skill. Then it crashes when clicking New Game over and over :(

Developer(+1)

Aaaw I'm sorry it crashes! It must be a packaging issue because it runs smoothly in the editor. I'll re-upload it when voting ends.

What makes movement feel clunky?

Thanks for your feedback :)

Very good looking and sounding game, but our main gripe was it was difficult to control. It took a lot of patience to get used to bending our fingers to touch the relevant keys. But in any case it was a game so well polished its hard to believe you managed it in a game jam!

Edit: I later saw it was controller playable by checking the game page. That increased the fun ten fold when I played it again (alone this time).  I still couldn't beat it though, since it kept crashing. But in any case you can ignore what I said about it being difficult to control, it's actually super easy using a gamepad. I updated our rating, because this game is really good.

The game was developed with A/D keys for movement. You're right, I can now see it being difficult to reach the F and JKL keys if you play with the arrow keys. Good thing you tried it with the gamepad though :)

I'm really sad it crashes. It's definitely a packaging issue :(

Thanks for the feedback!
