Man, I'm an HRtP fanatic. To know I can't play it kind of tears me apart. I'm sure I would have had a blast doing HRtP but in 1st person.

I really appreciate your response.
If or when we get back to the project would you like to give input on the gameplay?
As of right now it's currently just a sandbox, but we plan to put a proper scoring system.
Hell if you are interested I'd be interested in getting someone on the team.

I understand you might not have VR but looking at we got, most of the VR foundation work is done.

I appreciate the thought, but I've got no real creative skill and I'm constantly busy somewhere else. I just like playing is all, I'm content with just looking forward to maybe properly play it... someday...

Then you must enjoy another game here: https://eizi.itch.io/touhoubouncebounceball

Heya, went ahead and cloned the repo and tried to get everything working on my Rift S, with mixed results.

First off, awesome job for joining the VR Crew! The Touhou VR scene only expands thanks to the efforts of heroes such as you folk!

Gameplay wise, I like the idea of a VR-sandbox where Reimu destroys everything with her orb in the style of HRtP, it absolutely plays to the strengths of VR! The destructible environment is fun to play around with and the props in the VR scene look true to form.

Below is some feedback on your next go at VR(both the Unity project and the game)

  • Try and implement snap turning for accessibility
  • Keep your teleport pointer visible even when you’re not pointing at a valid teleport spot (so the player knows the button is working)
  • Give your SteamVR Input names more accurate names, change the defaults ASAP. They’re used by players to rebind keys to their preferred VR device (so you don’t bind “SnapTurnRight” to “SummonOrb”)
  • Hitting the radio to swap music is a cool interaction, but not so cool when collisions can happen several times in a few seconds thanks to all the debris
  • Highly recommended you use SteamVR’s pre-made hands rather than a controller model. More immersion and is a very cool system to play with
  • When summoning the orb, do also reset the orb’s velocity, so it doesn’t bounce away when you try to summon it. Maybe you didn’t notice since you could hold the summon button down on the Vive wand touchpad?

hey thanks man!
I'm glad you like the idea and the design of the game!
Really appreciate the feedback.

Post jam update will be up soon, main goal is to make it more accessible, with fully functional executable file.

After that getting all the art in, and of course your wonderful feedback!

Stay tuned!

Didn't rate it, can't even play it : (

We understand. However your comment is very much appreciated :)

reviewing now because i don't think i'll have time to play the whole thing before the voting period ends so i'm just basing this off of the footage i found and the concept

no idea how you got vr in jam, seems super tough to be testing constantly but congrats on pulling it off. when i first saw how massive the team was i was wonderin if everything would come together communication-wise but it seems like you got a legit thing out with the minor caveat of no build version, making the already niche vr even more difficult to try

but about the actual game: both 2d and 3d visuals are great, while i could not try the controls for myself bouncing around the ball and shooting looked neat if a bit floaty. advanced touhou vr angry birds

still clearly kind of a testing room with no particular goal or progression but honestly i don't think anything other than sandbox would have been reasonable within the jam period

i tricked my mac into thinking it was a vr what a dummy so i was able to play this very cool game i felt very high and hey at least its better than vr chat so that's an instant high rating

For some reason, I couldn't get this working even after trying to run the Unity scene on the correct version and all, but at least the exe in that same github clone started up in the headset. I couldn't interact with anything (I'm using an Index for what it's worth, but I would think that it shouldn't matter much with SteamVR), although looking around with the music playing for a minute or two was still an enjoyable experience on its own.

VR is a magical thing, and I'm glad to see that people have already made a handful of Touhou experiences, so I'm looking forward to the post-jam build of this while I try out the others from older jams! Especially since it seems like you have a few things planned for this.

Thank you for reporting the issue with the project.

I think the main issue was that actions mapped to the controller did not get into the build. Even after doing some troubleshooting. We'll make a comment when we had time to get back to fix it.

I'll check if we can map actions to the Index while we are at it.

Please consider releasing a Quest version, thank you!

I'll add it as an issue for the future, but will not be finished during the voting period. Thanks for showing interest!

Definitely wish I could play this, looking forward to a potential non-VR version

I wish I had a VR so I could play and rate this one...

It's okay, we knew accessablity was going to be a challenge.

This is the fate of all VR games in TouhouJam
Everyone on the team however was excited to try something new and challenging.

Stick with us though and see what updates are in store. The possibility of a non-vr mode hasn't been denied, in fact we looked into it just a tiny bit to see if it's possible. That said, will definitely say that it wouldn't be the same experience when it does happen.
