I agree with ProYd about the slowdown effect. I was very surprised it led to dynamic slower music, that must not have been easy to implement. All the music in the game is very catchy and easily the highlight of the experience. The controls are simple in a good way, as well. It's a gameplay loop that is a bit familiar, but your powerups truly help it stand out. Unfortunately, this needs an extreme amount of polish in terms of visuals and presentation. Sound effects for deflections, more cohesive assets (I.E. a pixel font) and more screens to separate the instructions are the big things I can think of off-hand. Good luck!

You have a nice concept to expand further! The time slowdown effect is cool.

I like the game and see the potential, I have to admit, I saw this project submitted early and somewhat watched it to see what changes would be made since the games we made are somewhat similar in nature. I feel that the art and atmosphere is what really draws the player to the game. (my own opinion) and I did not see a lot of change in that area, regardless I had fun with it and I think a lot of others will too, Good Job!

Looks like a great learning project!

  • Innovation – The bouncing shield mechanic has been in other games, but it is done well here!
  • Fun – It is fun bouncing away the bullets.  I wish the controls felt a bit more like a space ship with some acceleration and deceleration.
  • Graphics – Looks like Microsoft paint prototype art, but it is kind of charming hehe.  If your bad at art I would at least get some cc0 free sprite art and recolor it / edit it to make it your own or for reference practice.  A parallax star background would look great too.
  • Audio –It is cool how the slow-mo changes the music too~
  • Polish – Not much polish yet, but it is a good start.  Things need feedback too, example: the shield could scale up a little when bouncing a bullet, some movement particles on the ship, some trails on the bullets, some screen shake, etc.

Great job making the game, keep at it!  Please check out my game if you like Metroidvanias or platformers :D

I liked how the music changed for bullet time and a good selection of tunes overall that just seemed to fit with the game. The twin stick feeling is real. Fun little arcade game right here!

cool game! gameplay felt smooth and it was really easy to pickup. pretty much no tutorial necessary. the UI and menu could be improved i think. it felt a bit confusing and took me a bit too long to find into the game. once i was in it was nice. also having multiple difficulties is a cool feature to have. thank you for sharing! :)
