Cool idea, the art and the feel was great well done!
If Inscryption and Russian Roulette married and had a Tarot card child.
Incredibly fun and addicting, with easily learnable rules and phenomenal artwork!
I really enjoy the mastery element behind the game, as your growing experience helps garner familiarity with the various cards' points values. This was a super cool and original interpretation of the theme, and I love all the smaller subtler touches, like the grass on the tabletop swaying, alongside the oddly suitable music.
My only recommendations are to increase the synergy between cards, such as Suns and Moooons getting an extra +2 if placed side-by-side, and the rare glitch that would leave me unable to exit the Game Over screen. Fantastic work overall!
It hardly needs saying, but the art is amazing! I like the feel of the game, but I couldn't engage with as much of it as I'd have liked to as I encountered a bug whenever I won where I was stuck on the Victory screen and I had to force quit out of the game – the Pull Out button worked in that it made the opponent reveal its cards repeatedly.
From what I did manage to play, I was not sure as to how much agency the player really had? It seemed to be along the lines of a blackjack where the player is shooting for the moon with as high a total as possible, with the opposing dealer's cards being hidden, but not much in way of options in how the player can manage the RNG, like the tarot cards maybe affecting gameplay apart from just an associated score.
Despite technical difficulties, I was pulled in by the aesthetic side alone to try things out which is sometimes half the battle.
Impressive stuff!
The game felt really polished and well made.
I liked the visuals alot too, although at times it could be hard to see things clearly.
Great job.
I absolutely love the pixel art style, especially the way both the cards and the 3D models maintain that pixelated aesthetic. It’s visually consistent and adds a lot of charm to the game. The "jazz-like" music that plays during the tarot card interactions is fantastic—I found myself humming along to the melody, which adds a relaxed, enjoyable vibe to the gameplay.
While the art and music are strong, I’m still trying to understand how the gameplay fits with the game jam’s theme, especially when it comes to the risk and reward mechanics. It feels like the AI card placement could be more tied to the theme of escalating risk. Perhaps you could introduce a system where players unlock more powerful cards when they win. On the flip side, if they lose, a random card in their deck could lose its value, adding a strategic risk element to the game.
The pixel art for both the cards and the models is beautifully done, and the consistency between the 2D and 3D elements is impressive. It creates a cohesive and visually appealing experience.
You’ve done a great job with the audio, and it pairs wonderfully with the game.
Overall, the experience was really enjoyable. The music and pixel art are definite highlights that give the game a unique and polished feel.
Tying the risk and reward mechanics more closely to the theme and adding consequences for winning or losing could help strengthen the gameplay loop and make the experience even more engaging.
Super cute, I played "the tower" card every time because so pretty. Love the scene and the mood.
I think the game play was a bit random, I don't know if I was playing it correctly, but there was no way of knowing what the card values would show?
If you didnt have the player lose completely, and had the cards remember their value. It could have been a nice trial and error way of playing.
Overall very much enjoyed the art and mood, good job
This kinda reminded me of Inscryption which is one of my favorite games of all time :D
I really liked how it felt like I was progressing/improving through playing each round by figuring out the point value of each card. Also props to fleshing out the art and environment outside the card game.
I suggest that maybe in a future iteration it would be cool to play with a set hand of cards where my hand doesn't change every time I place a card, which could heighten the game's strategy and tension.
Also, there could be more info about the opponent's hand when you're playing, like you can flip over their card to see what they've played but in exchange, they can take a card out of your deck which could be an interesting dynamic.
I think you’ve got a solid base and would love to see it taken further!
Love the overall art and aesthetic. Walking through a weird train ride in an endless void playing tarot cards is great. And the card art is really amazing! The tower being a ferret and "mooooooon" had me laughing.
On the gameplay side I felt quite frustrated. As the player I'm doubly blind - first in knowing the value of the tarot cards, and secondly in knowing what my opponent is playing.
Re not knowing the value of my cards - there is some cool hint at verisimilitude in having to "learn to read" your cards by learning the values, but if that is the experience you were going for it needs to be fun for me to fail and learn.
Re not knowing what my opponent is playing - This plays well into the jam theme of pushing my luck, but I do think you need some feedback mechanism along the way. I need something to sweat about and decide if I want to push my luck or not. Right now the decision is binary. If I know my card values and have played high cards stop, if not, keep going and hope I get high cards.
Some other random thoughts - If you want to stick with the blackjack-like point comparison game, minor arcana seem like a natural fit and then you could use the major arcana for some other sort of system, maybe each one has a power that allows you to change the board state in some way.
I could also see the idea of a tarot read playing well with some sort of abstract combo system. "Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood" is a good reference to look at, where they give each card 4 numbers representing is strength in fire, water, earth and air and the sum of each of those determines the choices available to you.
Overall though, great jam game! Well done to all involved!
Congrats on completing the game jam! This game gives me old school Final Fantasy vibes, especially FF8, with the train carriages and the cards and the transition into battle. The mix of 3d and 2d pixel art (which looks great) is done really well.
Some general feedback and ideas:
This game idea has a lot of potential, I hope you guys will keep working on it. Well done!
Some really cool art guys. HUUUUGE FAN OF THE TAROT CARDS :D
The pixel art is beyond awesome
Awesome concept and art design. Ran into a glitch where i got stuck on the victory screen and couldnt move on. Only other change would be im not the biggest fan of the loading screen when entering the battle. But this was very well done in such a short timespan. :)
the art is so beautiful and I really appreciated the tutorial! very cool concept too!
