Very interesting take on the theme!! I really like how the assets are collaged together, it gives a beautiful vibe.

How did you choose to implement the Theme: Song of the Sea in your game?
The game is set in the ocean as a survival / resource game, with the risk of drowning or running out of resources along your journey. And there is plot relevant music!
Did you implement any of the optional Bonus Challenges, and if so, which ones?
It's set at sea, you can definitely drown by running out of oxygen and I'm JUST now realizing... I completely forgot about the jade bracelet one. Hmm.
Did you create your game in RPG Maker?

Hello. This was alot different then I thought I was going to play. Thats a good thing here
Spoilers
Im going to be real here and say that this game had high highs and low lows. The game play was the most fun I have had in this game jam for sure because you have a game play loop in it. But as much as I can say that I liked what you did for the gameplay it doesnt say much about the rest of the game. The story was almost not there. I mean i get that there was a story but me and my friend were puzzling to see it. The dialogue for the end was the only reason I know what the game was about because it was hard if not inpossible to see the story before it. Is the story good even after knowing it? Not really. The whole theme of that bird was pretty wierd. The theme I didnt really see. Saying that the background music that plays on the ocean is the song of the sea is not really what I was aspecting. I did like the art style from the view art pieces that were in there.
Final thoughts are that you need to look at your story writting. As I have said your game was the most fun in gameplay for sure. You just have to work on world building. Hope to see you around my friend.
Hey thanks for giving it a go! It’s a huge change from what I normally do haha. My last game had a lot of writing, I love writing -probably too much - and I was worried I was relying on it too much. So as a personal challenge I really tried to not have any text in this one except where necessary. Sorry if it felt confusing or not engaging, it’s all a learning curve. I love using these jams to take big risks and try very new things. I love playing survival / resource collecting type games and so I gave it a go haha. Always appreciate constructive feedback.
A beautiful game with really unique gameplay. It feels going between the mechanics of They Breathe to the esoteric representational dream sequences of Yume Nikki, and all for the service of a heart-breaking and very important story. Good job, I thoroughly enjoyed this game, and I feel like it has a lot of replay value to it.
As someone who lives next to a giant tree that is visited daily by many different bird species that I cherish a lot, this definitely felt very special to me. And sad, of course. But as much as everyone loves a happy ending, it's good that you showed the crude reality of that particular bird species. As horrifying as reality can be, it needs to be shown, and you managed to show it in a very appropiate way (not too cruel, not too crude, but still horrifying enough to create awareness)
You keep surprising me with how much you improve with each game, specially in terms of gameplay and art (this includes tilesets, sprites and CGs). The mechanics in this one were really interesting and they definitely make the game stand out (at times it felt like a twisted version of a virtual pet game).
The aesthetic and the art style of the game were also really amazing and quite fitting; it was cute, but at the same time it felt nostalgic and sad.
My main critique would be the music; I felt it was a bit too high/loud (I'm someone who has trouble with loud music/sounds all the time though, I know the struggle to find the right balance) and at times I felt it didn't really fit the game. It wasn't necessarily bad, I just felt I didn't fit the game. It doesn't ruin the experience though and it's just my oppinion (I guess it has to do with the vibe and feelings you expect from a game, and that obviously depends on each player, and I'm sure most players will love the music).
Overall, another solid entry by BroodyGaming with a new dose of really well presented/written sadness and really unique art style and gameplay and a really important message.
Great job!
Ahh, thanks for playing and giving me such good feedback! Always always a joy to hear what you have to say. I really do learn so much every jam, even if I sound like a broken record saying that. I didn't end up learning plug-ins for this one, but there's always the next. I really love critters and the ocean so I had a lot of fun designing and drawing for this one. I'm sorry if any of the music was grating for you, it IS so tricky to balance haha. Everyone's brains / ears / speakers are different lol. I'll just keep learning and growing though and helpful feedback like that is great to send me in better directions. I feel like in a weird way I'm always shooting for your level of polish in my games and it's really pushed me to get better at some of the small details of dev / game work that I would have otherwise not bothered with. So I hope to keep seeing you in these jams! It's always cool to hear your perspective.
I have to say, your games keep getting better and better! And by this point you've really refined your own unique style, which is a great thing to see!
Btw. I can't help but ask if the fact that you are playing as a bird in this one was in any way inspired by the bug in your previous game that had Hawk stuck as a bird for the last part of his playthrough of it :D
once again, a beautiful entry with ties to reality- definitely felt the heartache with this bittersweet theme. Once I read what the inspiration was for this, I knew I was in for a sad time, haha!
I love your creative uses of collecting things to eat and keep warm, I especially loved the cute little animations for the floof diving and eating- it felt sweet and innocent and ultimately hurt my heart, poor little thing..
I also love the intermission parts like when stepping on the notes and it zooming out to form an image that somewhat explains the narrative and changes to the land/the broader story (in that, it's human structure and / or our influence that causes the major changes to wildlife in the end- at least in the part that showed the buildings, haha; )
I'm glad you ended up keeping it with realistic expectations- as sad as it is, it's just what happens when it comes to these kinds of situations, especially for animals rearing extinction ): I hope we can help save these creatures and their habitat in the future!
The luck mechanic was a unique touch, and it all felt very fulfilling, gameplay wise whenever I was able to get them- and I also really loved the whale part!
All in all, another beautiful and heartbreaking entry! Well done! ;w;
aww!! thank you!!! I'm so glad you liked it and the emotions and story hit home. It was a huge challenge trying to keep as much writing out of the project as possible and I'm so relieved people are still relating to the character / themes. I really love survival games haha so I knew I just had to bite the bullet and also try to learn to balance that gameplay! Tricky and I really value your help and feedback on discord. I made some last minute changes based on some of the feedback I got from you. You're truly a huge asset and help in this little community and I appreciate every bit of time you give me <3333
Bonus challenge for next jam I try and make something not tragic??? pfftttt that felt wrong even typing it lol, gotta lean into my niche haha
Well, I think you did an amazing job with the limitations you set for yourself! And I must say, im incredibly touched and honored that you mention me as a source of help for things like this- aa im not doing anything special!! ;w; thank you! Also wao a non-tragic game from you sounds like it rly would be quite a challenge, but if you end up going that route (or not!), i'll be rooting for ya!
Saw HawkZombie's rating and I gotta say I am definitely sad (good)! Your source material was very educational as well and it just makes me very 'Awwww' about it.
