Description
Hi! This is a recreation of the Route 113 theme from Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, made in Furnace Tracker. It's my first time using this tracker, I heard about it recently and was really looking forward to trying it out, since it can emulate a lot of chips and combine them with each other, which is amazing.

I have tried to recreate the sound of a Game Boy Advance as faithfully as possible (by combining low-quality samples and the 4 original Game Boy chiptune channels), so you could say this submission is a Game Boy Advance recreation of a Game Boy Advance song, made from scratch using different instrumentation.

For this, I've used public domain samples exclusively. Compiling, trimming and looping the samples has actually taken much, much longer than the song itself, I spent a few weeks doing it - the thing is, in order to make retro music, people often resort to using not-entirely-legal samples taken from copyrighted games, and I thought it would be useful if I created an instrument compilation that was entirely CC-0, no strings attached and legal, for me and other people to use in Furnace Tracker. So I've used this jam as an excuse to prepare a full instrument set.

I've called this compilation SuperPeRIL 1.0 (Super Penguin Retro Instrument Library - yeah I came up with that name first and then found an excuse to use it xD). Feel free to download the original .fur file from my submission and use these instruments yourself as well. No credits needed!

I don't usually do covers, but they're great for learning and in this case it's been a very nice way to learn how to use this tracker and also test some of the instruments I had prepared.

I meant to do more covers (at least one more - I have an unfinished Sootopolis cover somewhere) as well as an entry with original compositions inspired by Pokémon, but unfortunately my job is pretty crazy right now so I haven't had the time. Still I'm happy I've been able to compile the instruments and finish this cover at least. I'll be using this tracker again for sure, I really recommend it.

Thanks for listening and I hope you enjoy the track!

If anyone is interested, I just released the instrument set as a separate itch.io submission: https://pingudroid.itch.io/superperil-retro-instrument-library I also included the instruments as separate .fui instrument files, in case you don't want to use my template. Hope you enjoy!

Really enjoyed this! I'm also a big fan of recreating the sounds of old sound chips, so I know how much effort you must've put in to make those samples and it's really paid off! Love the choice of track, your version sounds great and thanks for providing the instrument set :)

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!

Kudos for doing trackers :)) I just seem can't get into it, going though a bunch of number which make it disorienting sometimes

This is certainly faithful to GBA, make me reminiscence playing GBA games with its memorable high pitch

Love that weird stereo lead thing, make me feel weird every time it come up :)) it sound like a balloon going though places

Although, the song kinda too fast the first time i hear it :/

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!

It is faster than the original, so if you had the original in mind it must sound a bit too fast at first.

Thanks for listening!

Never heard of trackers before, but sounds like quite the work. You did it excellent, it sounds really good!

Developer

Thank you!

Using a tracker is like making music on a computer from the 80s. They're the predecessors of modern DAWs, but new trackers are still created and maintained today. They're quite useful to make electronic and retro music in particular. I'm glad you enjoyed the track! :)

A faithful recreation, and the background you've provided is awesome. Seeing the length you went to in order to create a liability-free instrument pack is awesome. That's such a nice resource for the community.

Thank you for your submission, and for your contribution to the community! I've never used a tracker, so I don't know anything about them, so this might be a good entry point.

Thank you! Preparing the instruments was fun. When I have the time I'll also publish the instruments as a separate itch.io submission, this way people will be able to find them more easily.

Trackers are a bit strange at first when you come from a DAW, but not that dissimilar once you get past the vertical layout. Furnace Tracker is a good choice for a first tracker, if you ever want to give it a try.

Thanks for listening!

This is super cool. Love the either ear effect, it makes these retro sounds feel so immersive.

This was just pleasant, like a combo of nice sounds but also nostalgia. Bravo.

Wow, this sounds super authentic! I love retro games so even though I’m not familiar with the game this is from, the song still fills me with so much joy and nostalgia :)

I also think it’s cool that you took the time to make your own instrument set!

I love retro game music as well. I'm glad you got those vibes, that was the goal! Thanks for listening ^^

Your hard work sure paid off because this sounds quite authentic! The stereo effect is really cool and is probably my favorite part of this track. I definitely appreciate that you took this specific song from the games as it definitely gives me nostalgia without me really remembering specifically from where. Thank you for breathing new life into this track and for sharing- great job!

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad you like the panning, it's a very typically Game Boy technique I couldn't pass on the opportunity. I really like this track, and the fact that it's not the most "typical" is a plus. Thanks for listening!

Great job! I specifically really enjoyed the little panning bit that occurs throughout. Definitely gives me some nostaliga from my days of playing Pokemon Emerald.

Developer

Thanks a lot! I'm glad you liked it.

you did a great job of recreating something, ancient! Like, this literally makes me feel like I'm holding a gameboy advance all over again. Great job with the song!

Developer

Thank you! I'm glad it comes across that way ^^
