Description
Genre: Lofi
DAW: Garageband, with an audio loop made in the Voice Memos app.

Paper Mario being part of my namesake, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make a cover for it! Sanctuary is one of the first songs from Paper Mario 64 that I heard and it's still my favorite, and I thought since the original song is so relaxing, I could make a version that's even MORE relaxing. I'd say the hardest part of this track was the part where the guitar comes in, because before I added humming you couldn't really hear the melody at all. That melody is a different leitmotif from the game by the way, the theme of Mario and Peach.

I said in my other submission that I'm new to mixing, so this song was my second attempt at achieving separation with EQ. Again, hopefully it turned out ok :)

Lovely lo-fi vibes! Nice job!

This is pleasant and soothing overall. Good work.

Drums are maybe a little pitchy and harsh and some of the synths are a little "flat" in that they are just sort of there, but this is hard to manage unless you have a midi controller and just play around with different velocities and getting in a groove.

Developer(+1)

Ah you're right about the synths, I probably could've played around with that a little more but since lofi uses a lot of loops I just ended up looping the same pattern. I'm assuming the drums could be fixed with some eq altering?

Thank you for listening and for the helpful input! :)

ya. I mean, some of this can just be gear quality at the end of the day, like if your gear sucks, making quality music, outside of synthy stuff can be kinda tough.

I used to write music with budget virtual instruments. It's a lot easier with real instruments.

Tho.... I did learn a lot by trying to make the budget instruments sound good, remembering back.

Ah ok, thanks! I do have a keyboard and midi adapter but overall my setup isn’t that ideal 😂 I guess everyone’s gotta start somewhere.

This sounds really soothing, specially when the vocals kick in. My only critique here is about the EQ of one of the two first synths that appear in the song - I think it’s slightly too loud, but honestly not even that much. Overall it’s a very nice and, well, relaxing, track!

Developer(+1)

Thank you, and thanks for the critique too! I’m always trying to improve, especially since I’m a super newbie to mixing/mastering :)

I love the feel-good vibe of this track and how it definitely fits the area that it is paired with. This is such a great, but often overlooked song from such a great game. I especially like when the bass comes in and at 2:21 there is a tight interval between bass notes that works so well because of the space that the higher layers leave for that harmonic interest to occur. The recording is also spectacular and pairs so well with the analog pad. Great work and thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much!! I just used my phone for the recording but I’m glad that adding effects like reverb and eq (and a little vocal transformation) helped it sound better :)

One of my favorite tracks from one of my favorite N64 games. Feels like something entirely new but still with that underpinning of something so very familiar. Overall I enjoyed it, felt very nice slowed. Great work.

Thank you! :)
