This game was very fun to play through, and decently challenging. It definitely fits the theme, and I would definitely recommend it. It took me several tries to beat, but the strategic and resource allocating mechanics were engaging enough to keep me playing.

Okay, I've come back to this one 4 or 5 times now. I think it's an absolute MUST-PLAY for everyone who knows about or participated in this jam!
Where to start... The theme is captured perfectly in the gameplay loop. You're the last hope before the fall of humanity. Can't get more 'permanent' than that. How it pertains to it's genre is even better. These type of resource management games need to strike a place between strict enough to keep you thinking, and straight-forward enough to not instantly overwhelm it's users. This did a great job in that regard. Even though there's plenty to manage, the actual counters are minimal. Food, Wood, Military Strength, and Carbon. Should be easy, right? Wrong! The difficulty plays a huge part in making this so replayable.
The only criticism I have, I'm a bit torn: On one hand, I would like the initial harvest season to be longer. On the other hand, I quite enjoy the fact that you can very easily lose in the first year if you don't play intelligently. It's NOT a mindless game, and I respect it for that. Frankly, I'd have to play it with a longer initial season to see if there's anything to be gained from it. Other than than, I wholeheartedly loved this game. Keep up the great work.
I am truly over the moon after reading this! I know that the games I love are part of a niche, so I am overjoyed when I find someone who clicks with one of my games like this.
Thank you for leaving such a thoughtful review. It's so obvious that you thoroughly explored the mechanics. Your feedback about the season length is really helpful! I made a lot of balance changes to target food and productions costs during development, but I never thought about extending the season! It really helps to have another perpspective.
Thank you šš
Amazing work! The music and sounds were so enjoyable (only nitpick is an imperfect loop but it's a GORGEOUS imperfect loop). Excellent use of the theme. I really wanted to be able to resurrect a crater field but that would of course break a core mechanic, so it was a nice bit of strategizing to be challenged with. I was really bummed when my military scout told me the squids had a power of 28, so I raised mine to 35, and then the next turn when I went to war they had a power of 148... maybe a bit of balancing is in order? Haha! Good job.
I like the concept and the sprites look gorgeous. I had a bit of a hard time learning the basics of the game but it did click for me after a little while. I think it would be less overwhelming if you only got introduced to a few things at a time, like maybe only being able to build forests and factories in the beginning, and slowly introducing barracks and mines after the first year or something.
Great game though :)
DAMN this is a fun game! I'm still playing it, and I'll keep on playing it! Highly rated. Please turn this into a full game!
Wow I really like this! Once I figured out was going on, I was having lots of fun. I especially loved the use of the theme in this. The decision to sacrifice a resource producer for a quick surplus was even more weightier because of losing that plot of land permanently. And the art and music were super top notch. I suggest sharing this with roguelike communities as I think it seriously fills void in that genre. Nice job!
This is such a kind and thorough review. Thank you for taking the time to play!
Alas, the game is almost entirely deterministic. I originally planned for more randomness, but had trouble balancing in only a week. Maybe post-jam!
I am looking forward to playing City Limits, it looks like it's right up my alley!
Like BeamDev it took me a bit of time to figure out what was going on, but once I got the hang of it I had fun playing it for a few rounds! I like the simplified resource-management game, and the aliens offering trades/deals with me gave each year an interesting twist. Nice work:)
Thanks for playing! Devin Nelson is the mastermind between the soundtrack, check him out on Bandcamp! And his band, Gloomy June!
