Cover

Description
This is an electronic and ambient cover. When "composing" the tracks I would listen to both the original and the remake's soundtrack and take what I liked from both into my tracks.

Storm King - I used distorted woodwinds to pay homage to the original. I really wanted to make it sound alien or as if there were giant creatures or spaceships in the sky, I made use of bird and whale sounds to give it a "big manta ray in the sky" feel.

Flamelurker - The flamelurker is a fiery and big guy so I made a bass with distortion for the melody that felt big and hulking and fiery.

Maiden Astraea - I've always liked the original's inconsistent melody so I tried to follow it as closely as I could just with synthesizers. I wanted this track to feel different so instead of using more orchestral percussion like the other tracks, I used a more electronic drum set.

Penetrator - In the original, the music for the Tower Knight and the Penetrator is the same, so I made this track with the intention of making it suitable for both the Tower Knight and the Penetrator but I ended up wanting it to just be for the Penetrator. I used a glitching choir to (somewhat) replicate the classic "ha ha ha ha ha" 's in the original and a distorted piano to represent a corrupted knight, towards the end I use a piano that becomes more distorted as it plays.

Maiden in Black - I took some inspiration from the remake's rendition of Maiden in Black and made an intro, but I like the original's use of silence so I didn't make it as long so I could use as much silence as possible while following the original OST.

I used Logic Pro X as my DAW. For the textures I used Polygon 2 and some samples I recorded from a Moog Matriarch. For the synthesizers I used Vital. Orchestral tools and Spitfire Audio libraries for the orchestral parts.

It sounds so soulsy... We need remake with this soundtrack. I really love souls-like games and OSTs from them and I'm happy that I listened to this^^

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

This is awesome! I am not familiar with the game, but listen to the soundtrack of the remake a while ago and your cover is  stunning. Love the blend of ambient and synth sounds and orchestra. The sheer amount of music and the arrangement/production of the tracks is insane.  Keep up the good work, love it!

Thank you!

Quite a lot to get through but I think it all came together well. I think "Penetrator" was the most cohesive overall and had the best flow. "Maiden in Black" gave off some Disasterpeace (FEZ) vibes with the instrumentation.

My my my, I'm not familiar with the original but so much to say!

You like experimenting and it really shows with the little details. Wonderful use of the neat little binaural panning which gives your tracks a sens of hollowness and space that perfectly fits the atmosphere.

I think you are clearly improving with a more controlled used of distortion, we can see it especially in Flamelurker, that bass is absolutely amazing. Also, I see that you took into account previous remarks, and for example you have a much more controlled use of glitchy/stuttering effects compared to your other tracks like "The Magician theme" (which is still my favorite of yours ^^).

Subtle use of panning for glitchy effects, but I think it could be even more pronounced for things like the glitching choir in Penetrator to add to that sense of danger/uneasiness (like the danger could come from anywhere kinda feeling).

Also, if I had to nitpick a bit more, I would say that your strings staccatos sound a bit weak in Penetrator, compared to the dynamic of the rest of the track. Same thing with the percussions accompanying them.

But that's just nitpicking and the overall submission is fantastic. Great job, I can't wait for your next submission!

Developer

Thank you! Glad I'm succeeding in controlling the distortion haha, it's like trying to tame a bull sometimes.

Also thank you for the nitpicks, I love hearing constructive feedback!

I'm really, really digging all the little sound design things you've done in Storm King - Definitely captured the alien feel you were going for.

The bass in Flamelurker is absolutely rattling my skull. It carries the melody very well, while also providing some intense low end. The texturing above it does feel a little bit drowned out by it, though. I can tell you had some fun with the stuttering!

Maiden Astraea is a really lovely electronic texture. I can picture it in a portal-esque game pretty easily!

Penetrator right off the bat feels like a bossfight. I mean, it is, but your rendition of it really feels like a bossfight. It's somber, and yet still intense. I really dig it.

Maiden in Black - Lots and lots of space in this one. Not to repeat what other folks have already said, but I'm definitely getting portal vibes.

Overall, I really love what you've done here. It all sounds really good!

Thank you for your insights! Sound design is probably one of my favorite things to do in my tracks so I'm glad it came through in Storm King

The Demon's Souls OST is one of my favorites, so I was excited to listen to this one. Did not disappoint! They all stay true to the energy of the originals while also adding something new- like we're in Boletaria but there's a glitch in the matrix.

Developer

Thank you! Going into this I tried to think about what the Demon's Souls soundtrack would be like if it were more futuristic

Very nice, reminds of Salt and Sanctuary and Hollow Knight a bit in atmosphere and style. Great job.

Every one of these is fantastic. I love how ominous and foreboding the pieces are, which is perfectly complimented by your instrumentation. Opting for Spitfire was a genius choice, I love what they've got. Great job!

Developer

Thank you, ominous and foreboding was something I was going for!

Storm King is very menacing, I love the timbres you chose for this one, and the way it ebbs and flows in intensity throughout the piece.

Flamelurker feels like a great way to expand on that intensity, it almost feels like a march towards certain death. The glitchy stuttering really adds to the feeling of something being wrong and is a great way to crescendo the piece without adding even more aggressive instrumentation on top.

Maiden Astraea is pretty much the opposite - it's a really nice break from the chaos, and really beautiful without sacrificing the interesting texture palette you've chosen.

Penetrator feels threatening without feeling like it's retreading territory you already covered with the other pieces. I really like the way it links into the previous track by using the stuttering to work as a through line even though they're otherwise quite different.

Maiden in Black is a wonderful way to end off this cover. I love how droning and melancholic it is. This one really feels like something you could hear in Portal 2 (or FEZ near the end), it's fantastically ambient and inhuman.

Really great work! I absolutely loved everything you made here.

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I take a lot of inspiration from the composer of FEZ so I’m glad you picked up on it
