Description
First Part: You've almost made it to the CEO's office. Only one more obstacle lies between you and them: The Drill Sergeant, a former Soldier who is now Head of Security at Evil MegaCorp. After losing it in war, his left hand was replaced with an electric drill augmentation that soon turned him into a firm believer in human-machine symbiosis. During the next few years, he augmented his body with more and more bionic tools, to the point that without his augmentations, he would no longer be able to survive. Don't be fooled by this, however: He knows how to use his tools as deadly weapons and won't hesitate to do so against anyone threatening MegaCorp. You will need to give it your all if you want to stand any chance against this foe.

...

Second Part: The Drill Sergeant lies on the floor, barely any lifeforce remaining in him. As the last augmentations are powering off, his brain finally stops being clouded by external signals and he realizes that he's been living a lie. He cannot be saved, but in his final moments, he finds redemption by telling you the access code to the CEO's office. He wishes you the best of luck. You will need it for the battle ahead.

Tools used:

Software: Ableton Live 11 Lite, TAL Vocoder 2 plugin

Hardware: A lot, including stuff we actually bought at a hardware store. Go watch our making-of video!

Message from the artist:
This is our (girlfriend + me) entry for the OST Crunchtime Composing Jam #2. After we had such a blast the last time, we knew we had to participate again. So this weekend, instead of building some furniture as we originally intended, we did a recording session instead.

When we first read the theme, we were a little unsure if we could consolidate it with out style; after all, recording analog instruments doesn't really feel very cyberpunk to me. In the end, however, I think we found a neat balance between manual recording and digital effects / post-processing. And I very much recommend everyone to use a vocoder on a set of electric drills, it's a lot of fun!

How does it fit the theme?
See our description: This is meant as a theme that plays during a boss battle against a bionically augmented human.

Really cool and creative entry, love that you used non-conventional things to make this, and going for what sounds like a 70's psychedelic rock cyberpunk song. Really cool track!

Funky time! Ooh, nice violin. Getting a very psychedelic feel from this. I like it. Vocoder time! Uh oh... "more than a human? WCGW.". Haha, I like how it sounds like he's literally ascending now.

Cool track! Definitely a unique entry. Also cool idea to have a making of video included.

I am totally down with Cyberfunk! Everybody loves a drill solo. The harmony drills are a great touch!

Really interesting to hear this done with a bunch of hardware supplies! The making-of video was also really fun to watch, thank you so much for making it and sharing it with us!

Good job with the recorded sounds. Not easy in such a tight window.

This sounds sooo 70s... psychadelic rock, early synths, vocoder... I know that cyberpunk is more 80s, but cyberpunk with 70s aesthesis would looks really cool.  Nice work.
And I hope you get that furniture fixed next weekend ~_^.

Heh, wasn't really our intention to have it sound so 70s, but yeah, I guess my musical influences show :D

Gotta love the creativity that went into this track, the making of video was very interesting, so thanks for the bonus content!

Ok yeah that drill + vocoder effect is awesome. And the heavily processed violin (I think) is great too. My favorite part is 1:27, such a satisfying progression and resolution. My personal preference would be for less reverb on the melody there so it really cuts through since it's such a beautiful moment.

Sorry you didn't get to make your furniture but thanks for sharing your talents with us :)

Developer

Thank you so much for your kind words! You probably have a point about the reverb and to be honest, I think we partly added it to cover up some slightly sloppy recordings.

The main melody has a strong jazz-rock vibe! The last part was totally unexpected (in a good way)

Nice track ^^

That Mixolydian bassline off the bat caught my ear immediately! Loved the vocal samples used. Great work!

Developer

Thank you! Yeah, mixolydian is one of my favourite modes and pretty much my go-to when I try to create a funky bassline.

A more innocent take on the theme. What a twist. I love the whimsical feel and the section with the robot voice ending in those ethereal voices. Nicely done!

That groovy bass line!

And very 70s surf-rock kinda guitar lead line, so cool.

Now I wanna go on whacking drilling adventures with this playing in the background!

Really unique take, I loved the bass line in the first section! Well done!
