I enjoyed playing this game! Great job! The art style was fun and the enemies were cool. It was some what hard to get close enough to kill them at first but since they stay dead even after you respawn, I was still able to explore everything and beat the boss.

Also, I noticed you can speed run the ending:

Developer

:'D That's awesome! You're the only one I know of who found that! Awesome job exploring! I'm glad you enjoyed the art and the level. We'll pay extra attention to the enemy interactions for the next jam and focus on that side of things, as well as more dialogue and a better tutorial system to improve the puzzles and gameplay. Happy holidays and thanks so much for the review :

The visual looks really good, the house look a bit odd but everythings else look really nice especially the boss. The animation are nice too.

Gameplay wise its nice but the attack range are a bit short, you cant really hit the green enemy when it is facing you. Also after it kill you, they will freeze at the same post like this.

Also, in the boss fight, you have a chance to stay in the invincle frame (the transparent look) and cannot interact with anything.

But still, nice game!

Developer

Thanks for the great feedback. I will extend the melee range and add some VFX to make it more obvious where the attack range is. The animations aren't perfectly synced to the hitboxes, unfortunately. Slowing down the enemy melee and adding a stun/dodge/counter system is part of the plan for the next edition. There are a few bugs like the paused enemy  that need to be ironed out for sure. Getting stuck in the invulnerable mode is not something I have come across before, so thank you for warning me! Did you make it to the end despite the glitch?

Submitted(+1)

Ya the game itself isn't too long  so i restart and make it to the end.

Developer

Oh good. That's part of why I didn't have the enemies or gates reset after a ko. I'll try and recreate the invulnerability bug on my side. (Were you using Windows 10?)

Submitted(+1)

I was using win11, tho i dont remember how i got into that bug since i only realised the bug half way through the boss.

Developer(+1)

Okay, I'll keep an eye out for it in the next round of testing. Thank you again for the feedback and advice!

Great game! I like the overall aesthetic & theme. The blend of 2D & 3D looks cool. I had trouble figuring out where to go & what to do. I also, felt the enemies were packed too densely in & levels felt cramped

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! I'll make a tutorial level after the contest to help people. Maybe add some extra tip dialogue to Grandpa Joe so he can help players who get stuck. You're the first person to mention the cramped feeling, but I think you're right. I'll see what I can do to open the world up in the next version and maybe zoom the camera out a bit more too.

Super cute game, I think the artstyle and music is really charming, really liked the parallax scrolling on the background.  This definitely feels like a throwback to some older platformers!

This game was really hard, it could use some tutorials but it sounds like you know that already.  I would have never thought to hit a tree with the characters tail.  I loved the juice in it in this game, however  I would have probably gone with a different sound effect for hitting someone with an acorn.

Great submission thank you for the fun!

Developer

Thanks! It's good to know the art and music were well-received. Thanks for mentioning the parallax background, btw.

I have a background in old-school games and was worried I had made it too easy or obvious—once the skills and layout are known it could be speed-run in under 3 minutes. However, it's pretty unanimous that I need to soften things up for the next jam and find other ways to extend the gameplay and keep it fun. The more feedback the better and I appreciate it all! Next time I'll slow down enemy attacks, add a stun effect, and include a more obvious tutorial stage.

Hmmm, yes the acorns are supposed to be explosive because of mutation caused by the aliens... but some explanatory dialogue was cut from Grandpa Joe.  With more time, though I do want the SFX to be more different between MC and enemy attacks to make it more clear who is being hit.  In your case was it a lack of explanation, too much similarity, or was the concept simply too strange?

Here's a playthrough for anyone finding the game overly difficult or not using Windows OS. It's definitely beatable, but the combat system can be improved in many ways. Thanks for all the great feedback so far!

The control made it hard to play, anytime I got close to an enemy they killed me super quick and I couldn't tell if I was doing any damage. Thankfully on death, any enemies I did manage to kill didn't reset. I hit q, looking for other key binds and the game quit. Nice art though!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback. I'll dial back the difficulty and increase sensory feedback while attacking the enemies. The complete control layout is displayed in the options menu accessible from the main menu. Thank you for mentioning the "q" issue,—that was set up for debugging purposes and I must have forgotten to disable it in the script. Glad you liked the art!

Developer

**Playing tips to help people with the difficulty**

1. try hitting the trees with your tail.

2. the big guys are invulnerable to acorn damage

3. strike quick and dodge quicker

4. there are unlimited health + ammo pickups, as well as respawns (though there is a cooldown period)

**Hopefully this helps. For a future version of the game, we'll work to adjust the difficulty and add a tutorial system**

i liked the character and enemy designs, they look like 3d  are they 3d meshes or 2d sprites extracted from 3d meshes? (or animated so that they look 3d?)

Developer

Thank you. It was a combination of 3d and 2d art, all converted to 2d sprites. Main tools used on the art side were Blender and Clip Studio Paint.

The art style is adorable! Good job here! And the music fits well.

Where did you get that Godot Into? That makes it look very professional.

To me it feels more like a hard platformer than an actual metroidvania. Which is not bad. I struggled with the difficulty though. Whereever I went, I died withing seconds.

Maybe some guidance or introduction would help here.

Developer(+1)

Thank you, haha, glad you like it. Abrar did a very nice job with the music.

I used Blender for much of the art, including the Godot intro. I wanted something more fun and animated, but adore their logo and program.

Yes, perhaps you're right. In the future, I'd like to add more unlockable skills that open new areas, rather than just puzzle solving.

In a future addition, I'll take your advice and ease the player into the difficulty. I want to make it challenging, but not overly frustrating.

*The health-dropping trees reset every 10 seconds, to try and balance the difficulty... though some people might not realize they can hit them with their tail....

Thank you for the good points, an outside view is crucial for improving playability.

Game download only had .exe ??? not a folder ...it just gave an error when trying to download and open it up

Developer

The game is a Godot file, so everything is self-contained. It is a Windows-compatible file (not sure what you're using). Other possible issues may be caused by download interference of a firewall/antivirus. I downloaded it on multiple computers and seems fine, though I have to tell Windows that it is a safe file to download. Sometimes an anti-virus may mistakenly remove crucial files due to overprotectiveness.

Are there other details you can offer, such as the OS or version of Windows you use, etc?

ill try again today Windows 10

Developer

Perfect, please let me know if you still have problems.

Game crash after collecting the first green nut to the right :(

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the heads up. I'll fix a couple things and repost the file tonight!

Developer(+1)

I fixed the issue (at least when I play) and polished many other aspects with the 1.3 version. Have fun, and please let me know if there are any other problems you find :)
