Synaptic Protocol is a solo tabletop game that invites you to explore memory, meaning and the thing we hold most precious: our identity. At it's core, this is a journaling game that uses evocative prompts to guide you through the reconstruction of your character's memories. What really stood out to me, was the way the game captures the emotional weight of what we chose to remember, and how it frames memory as both fragile and powerful and how isntrumental it is in forginng our "self".
Like many solo games though, Synaptic Protocol comes with one caveat: the depth of your experience is only as good as what you bring to it. If you're willing to open up and lean into the prompts,it can be a profoundly moving experience. If not, it may feel sparse. This isn't a flaw unique to the game, but rather something I feel many solo games suffer from so I thought it worth mentioning.
Overall, Synaptic Protocol is a thoughtful and resonant design that succeed in what it sets out to do: Asking us to examine what makes a memory worth holding on to, and who do we become if we can't. For players who enjoy solo games or those who want something reflective and introspective, it is an easy recommendation.
