Art simple but cute and charming, fits the magical girl quite theme very well, loved the "comic panels" that kept popping up. Story is very magic girlish too, also the classic cartoon/anime "villain" going "hey let's send my unique monsters after the protagonist one by one along a few grunts". I saw the main twist coming, tried to make the choices for the good ending and was happy to see the story actually worked as expected from there. Also leaves nice open hooks for a possible sequel, which I would like to play too. Music fits nicely.
Something that annoyed me a bit is that for a Sweet-based magical girl and the incantations do mention sweets quite often, there seems to be quite a lack of actual sweets during the game besides the giant lollipop. Like I don't think the protagonist even actually eats a single sweet during the whole game, despite stuffing herself with fried onions in several instances! There's several mentions of cooking, but never sweet baking! She could power herself up by eating sweets, she could need to improve her cooking/baking skills to improve her magic, (actually I may take that idea for a game of my own lol). Speaking of which, she's also supposed to be smile-based and then many of her pictures don't even have a mouth!
Thank you for this game!
It had more content than I expected, but considering it’s a 1-month jam, I shouldn’t be surprised to see some VNs in par with Nanoreno entries!
At first, the pixelized art (yet not pixel art) bothered me, but I got used to it. The heart dot on every “i” letter in the font too, but I also got used to it.
I feel like the main branching decision is obvious to the experimented player, however from the point of view of the character, the impact of decision X on event Y is not exactly clear, it feels like you just “unlocked” an event leading to a different path.
The cover change, esp. after bad ending, has a pretty strong impact.
About audio, I think the “hit” SFX repeated multiple times when characters are angry and shout is a little too much, as they don’t exactly hit stuff. It’s a bit similar to the screen shake in Phoenix Wright, but this VN is not really over-the-top, so I think it fits less well.
Now for the less glamorous parts, here is a list of typos I’ve found:
“Sily Noli!” -> “Silly” “sine you already know” -> “since” “‘mercenaries’(she” -> “‘mercenaries’ (she” (with space) “Hears Kingdom” -> “Hearts Kingdom”
Good story. overall I can't really say much without major spoilers, but I will say that there are some parts that just bug me.
Your art is very cute and a great fit. Audio on the other hand, while I know that it is common to have only piano in VNs I really don't think it should.
Gameplay is obviously limited to 3 choices. Though there are I believe 60 different combinations of choices, only one actually has a different outcome. Thankfully Ren'Py comes with a skip button.
All in all good job!
This was fun! The art was great, and I really liked the designs of all the characters. I really liked the idea of Octavina have ink powers, I thought that was a pretty creative power. I wish we could have seen a bit more of the way she fought, the little bit we saw was cool. I thought choosing which powers to use was fun. I didn't try out all the combinations, so this might already be the case, but it would be cool if there were multiple ways to succeed in combat, especially once you get more abilities.
The writing was good too, getting the endings made me reevaluate a lot of what happened so far, which enhanced the experience for me.
A small detail, but I also appreciated the differences all the characters had in their text boxes.
There was a lot more to this entry than I was expecting. The art is fantastic and the story is excellent. I thought I'd guessed the twist, but it turned out I was slightly off base. I thought I'd I think the pacing was generally good, though I did rush through things a bit because I was in a hurry.
I have two fairly minor nitpicks. The first is that some cutscenes rely much too heavily on text rather than images and animation. The second is the dearth of interactivity; there are a few decision points but many very long stretches of just clicking through text.
Still, this is a very strong entry, especially for something that was made in eight days, and I enjoyed it a lot. The sequel hook at the end excites me, too.
I really liked this. Especially the surprises at the endings, and the foreshadowing leading towards it. It does have a few grammar/typo errors, though. Still, it's impressive that you were able to make this in just 8 days.
