Did you work in a team?
Just me!

Was the resolution a challenge?
Sub-pixel resolution was the biggest challenge. I ended up having to write a lot of logic to ensure non-smooth scrolling and movement. Working with 8x8 sprites was also quite restrictive.

What did you learn?
I've gained a whole new appreciation for sub-pixel resolution, and all the behind-the-scenes magic that normally makes our lives easier. Also, the core mechanic of the game (where the player assembles a monster that can have a wide variety of shapes, sizes, movement speed and attack points) was more difficult to implement than I'd have thought, but I learned a lot about Godot's inner workings.

This is a really cool game, as you have to decide on which parts to use while making sure that you don't have a weakness. The gameplay's great and the graphics mesh together well.

Thank you! I've found I like the high-risk high-reward playstyle of using legs and tails, but obviously you die very quickly if you don't have enough torso parts.

This kind of gameplay is crazy ambitious for a jam like this. I am impressed that you were able to get the evolution mechanic in under the time constraint.

I do wish the controls were a little more ergonomic. I found myself having harder time moving up and down, sometimes having to look at my keyboard.

Developer

Thank you so much! I've been rolling the idea of an evolution mechanic around in my head for a while, and this jam was a good opportunity to try it out. I'm glad it came together.
The game works better on gamepad than keyboard, I think. I'm still looking for a way to make 4-directional movement and 4-directional combat work on keyboard. Something to work on. Thanks for the feedback!

A fun little game.

Going left is particularly nerve racking as the monster gets longer.

Developer

Thanks! I figured that putting the player spawn point in the middle rather than on the left would add some challenge, since it forces you to plan out your movements a bit if you have a long monster.

This is an enjoyable game. Love the idea of building a little creature from parts scavenged!

My only real issue with the game is, I’m supposed to collect DNA from the levels, which is dropped randomly from the monsters I kill, however, the drop seems random, but when I beat a level it’ll say there was 5 DNA and I might only find one. Not sure if DNA is hiding in crates or something that I’m completely oblivious to.

Very nice game with a fun concept! Well done!!

Developer

Thank you! There's a luck factor to the DNA drops - stronger monsters are more likely to drop more parts, but it's not 100% reliable. That could probably be rebalanced a bit.

I love the idea so much, and the creatures you can make are just weird and wonderful. The pixelwork for the parts is very good. (Is there a way to remove parts from your creature, or are you always just adding on?) Overall, an enjoyable game.

Developer

Thank you so much!

There isn't a way to remove parts per se, but some parts can overwrite others. For example, legs can go on top of torso segments. I was going to have a more complex monster-builder, but I ran out of time.

This was a very interesting concept! I love that you made it with Godot!

Developer

Thank you kindly! Godot is a very powerful engine, especially given that it's completely free.
