One of the best entries here, at least for my taste, I'm not joking! I really like this type of games. I understood right away, that I couldn't trust the shots (because of the timer to use it again) to make a highscore, so I pretty much  dodged and only shot when was necessary! Well done!

PS: If you have the time, please try out my entry https://itch.io/jam/lowrezjam-2018/rate/293637 (don't forget to rate it : ) )

Cheers

Thanks for the positive feedback, I'm glad you liked my little game!

Will certainly try your entry!

Got a score of 227 before I realized that I could shoot. Now, I can't even match that score. :| Nice game.

I got 246. If you stay on the right and only shoot when necessary, you can make an highscore. But be careful, because sometimes it spawns 2 "asteroids" in a row.

Good tiny game. I wish the game would stop when you die to show you what your final score was.

Thanks for your comment! More quality of life features would of course make for a better game. In my entry for the jam, I opted to keep my game at exactly 1024 bytes, which means I had to cut out as many features as possible for the game to fit within that size.

Impressive for being 1KB in size! A minor thing; if you apply

image-rendering: -moz-crisp-edges

as well as "pixelated" then it'll scale pixelated in Firefox as well as Chrome :-)

Developer(+1)

Thanks. That's true, we'll have to wait until the browsers settle on a standard to keep the tiny file size! :-)

After spending an hour cloning your game to see if was able to make it under 1k, I ended up with a .jar file of about 3.5kb, with a bit more of compression I think I can make it 3kb. Then I realized I could actually download your code. I only have one thing to say, what the hell dude? Are you the God of Compression?

Happy people are downloading it and attempting the same in other languages! In Java it's a bit more difficult... But you can make code really short when you compress it by hand!

It's really hard to do what you did in java. Just the code for the window and keyboard input will probably consume about 512bytes. I remember there was a contest before, called java4k, although it's pretty much dead now, I tried to get some source codes of the games they used to create for that contest and I found 1 guy from who I learnt about "pack200". So using proguard + pack200 I managed to make 1.99 KB.

What is interesting is that Notch (creator of minecraft) managed to do Meg4kman in under 4KB. I don't know how he did it considering that it has enemies and 25 levels, it's pretty much a bigger project than this one. It's amazing!

Very simple game, but the fact you managed it in 2kb is insanely impressive. From a technical perspective, incredible work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for your comment! Just a minor correction -- it's actually 1024 bytes, not 2kb.
