Developer Feedback Questions
I only had time to make a quick 1 take devlog video after work. Thanks for hosting the jam! I hope to get some fresh-eye playtest feedback.

Hey! Nice game you are building :) I did not play for long however.

Overall things:

  • I think it would be useful to input buffer the spear throw, as well as the jump, it would improve the controller feeling.

About the improvements:

  • I think some hazards are not different enough, so it could feel unfair if you do not see it because it is camouflaged. If its a conscious decision, its allright.

I enjoyed it :) Keep up the good work!

Thanks for playing! Yeah I do need to make some stand out more~ like the spikes have looked bad for far too long haha.

Hey so this game wasn’t really for me, as I don’t particularly enjoy metroidvania type experiences. I don’t really get on with backtracking for some reason.

However it’s clearly well made (and optimized, had 290fps mostly) and well presented with nice music and sound.

For me the moth/butterfly boss had too many hitpoints and dissapeared to quickly, making the fight a bit drawn out and dull.

The spear and seed mechanic are nicely executed, but I’m the wrong type of player to truly appreciate these gameplay elements, so it’s hard for me to be objective about the whole experience. I wanted to move faster and wall jump etc.

Developer

Thanks for playing! Yeah, exploration is not for everyone hehe.  I'm actually making the first real boss now. Hopefully it will be better than the current boss, you use your spear to get behind it and damage it.  (I'm turning the moth mosquito boss into 5 mini-boss encounters throughout the world, also they will be much faster to defeat hehe) Nice to hear it ran well! On some lower computers there is odd sprite tearing I need to figure out how to fix.

Nicely done game, good polish , just overall a fun experience to play!

Developer

Thanks for checking it out :D

KNOWN BUG:  There is a bug if you die at a boss it doesn't reset correctly...  You can hit ESC and go to the main menu and then Continue to try it again lol.  It is fixed in my version of the game (can't update the page until the jam is over~)

Pretty game! I managed to beat the mosquito boss and got into the purple mushroom area. I liked the mechanics and the seed powerup is really nice! I couldn't spontaineuously find any key, so maybe I should explore more. Here are my suggestions so far based on what I noticed:

  • The piano song is very relaxing and moving, but during the boss fight, maybe another more fast paced song would be appropriated;
  • Some hazards and spikes instant kill the player, maybe the game could be more forgiving about the damage;
  • While exploring the scenarios of the game, I personally found the botomless pits unfitting! But I don't know what to suggest here, because maybe the pits are necessary for the level design in particular, in some way that I don't realize yet. Otherwise, I'd suggest to try to minimize them;
  • If the spear gets out of camera (player's view), maybe it could automatically return to the player;
  • Maybe the player could destroy faster the mineral rocks;
  • The "scenes" could have some hints or NPCs suggesting to the player where to go or what to do, in order to minimize the chances of players getting lost (I did!);

That's it! Beautiful project that you have in your hands! Keep it up and bring it to RELEASE!

Hey thanks for the awesome feedback~ I think in the beginning it does need some more guidance, haven't really done a tutorial section yet hehe.  I do want it to be very open world and difficult like Hollow Knight, so exploration and finding upgrades is the main goal. Thanks again for the feedback :D

Really cool game, looks amazing , and seems like you have really put in the work, really nice.

I must admit tho, it is a bit of a tough start. Maybe it is because I just woke up. I will try again and ask my partner to try too as she might do far better than this for me.  Sadly tho, i must admit, because of the difficulty, I won't be a dependable player. If your goal is to go for a hard game, then you nailed it, nothing wrong with that, in fact some people will prefer that, however from a player base, I would suggest adding another world that is slightly easier. I am only suggesting this because your game is beautiful and I think everyone should at least try it, but if it is impossible to get past the first section without a bit of brain power then the exposure might suffer. Again if it is what you are going for, really cool, but if you want to build a bit of retention...

Good luck, not that you need it ;)

Developer

Thanks a bunch for giving it a try! Yes the metroidvania genre is know for it's difficulty and open world exploration, so I gotta make it quite hard for the core player base hehe.  Someday I'll have an easier starting kind of tutorial section. Thanks again for giving it a try :D

So I asked my partner to play it, she loved it! Figure things out and be lik "ohhh"...

Just something we saw, not sure if it is intended, or a bug, or now maybe a spoiler, but if you throw the spear and die, you respawn with 2 spears... Giving you a bit of an advantage.

Still, great game!

Developer

Thanks!! That's been a bug, I've fixed many times, but it happens in various situations haha. Hopefully I can squash them all :D

Wonderful and NEAT game. Controls and movement are smooth, atmosphere is mystic and music is relaxing (even  when some time after hearing it becomes repetitive).
It's one of those games where skills and brain are a must and I like it.

Nice work overall!

Developer

Thanks for checking it out :D I'm glad to hear the controls were good!  Someday I will pay a composer for better music for sure hehe.  Thanks again~

Would like to play your game, but can't install it with itch Intaller. Can you please provide a downloadable with Windows as the  target platform? If you don't choose this particular OS, Installer won't install it.

Developer

Thanks for trying.  Not sure why it won't DL. There is a zipped game file to download on the bottom of the game page~

In your game page settings, you can specifiy the target OS.  When you check the box for Windows, at the end it will look like this. Won't download EXE directly - itch App promises at least a minimum of security.

Developer(+1)

Oh I forgot to click that!  I think it will work now~ Thanks for letting me know :D

Submitted(+1)

Now it's working :-) Will come back with my gameplay feedback later. Thanks!

Great work, the atmosphere and the art of every part of the game is really nice and makes you feel good while playing, the hazards are really well made. Will be checking it out on steam!

Developer

That's great to hear, and thanks so much :D

Wow, this looks like a fully fleshed out & polished game!

I had some problem with the basic controls... dash and melee attack didn't work for me (playing with the mouse). Any idea what the issue could be?

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! Melee attack is on the mouse wheel, pushing it down. (I need to pick a better button lol)  Dash is unlocked after beating the 2nd boss :D  If you have a controller, it is much better I think.

Got it! I made it to the first boss (first prince?) and encountered a bug - after dying, the player character didn't respawn correctly (the boss fight restarts the player character is nowhere to be seen and the screen is darkened a bit). I'm attaching a screenshot.

The game is really cool so far! The spear mechanic works well and solving the platforming challenges feels rewarding. I liked the boss design also. The presentation is great, perhaps the music loop could be a bit longer as it becomes repetitive (but that's a minor detail, the overall presentation is a step above most other submissions - obviously this title has been in the works for a while :)).

Developer

Oh thanks for the bug report! I'll look into it~ did you die from him shooting you and he died at the same time?

Submitted(+1)

Yeah I think I died from him shooting me. He was low on health, not sure if he died also.

Developer(+1)

I figured it out! I forgot that I //commented out the code that reloads the scene when the player dies... so the boss doesn't reset when the player respawns lol

Developer(+2)

Hello and good day!

  • I found out about this jam right when it started, so my goal was mostly to build out the world.  I hope players have fun exploring it!
    • Building out an open world is quite tedious, but also really rewarding!
  • I started this game last October for the Metroidvania game jam.  I liked the end result so much I decided to make this a Steam game!
  • You can check out the Steam page here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2248230/YesterSol/  (The page is a bit outdated, making a new trailer later.)
    • Please Wishlist to help a solo-dev out :D

Your game really deserves to be on Steam. Good luck, wishing you the best.
