Hey there Honk Honk Studio , I got your game for judging so here are some of my thoughts. I love detective stories and thought limiting it to a train was a good way to keep it from getting too large to finish. The movement of the sprites looked familiar to me, choosing a tall base was a smart move since it made the baby really feel small in comparison. The story worked well and gave me enough clues to make some deductions, though some of the jokes fell a bit flat to me.
I've worked on a detective story in the past, and noticed you fell into a few pitfalls my team did back then. Contest deadlines make things difficult to give a lot of control to the player, but as a player I wanted to be able to make the final accusation since I had figured out who did it after the 'father's eyes' comment. I'm sure you ran out of time so had the detective solve it all himself, but it did disappoint me to just watch it happen instead of help solve it. This felt more like a visual novel than detective game, so if you want to add in more detective gameplay mechanics make sure to give more options for the player to interact (and make their own mistakes) with the clues.
Overall, you had an interesting concept here, I just wish there were more places I could interject so that I could feel like I really solved the mystery.
Thanks for playing! We wanted to make an unusual, funny, visual novel detective game that could be played in under an hour. In our planning phase, we chose to go for more of a story driven, linear game that played out like a movie. Our motto during the design process was, "That will get added to the re-release", and having more player involvement would definitely be our focus in the future. But our main goal with this game jam was to release an engaging story with a fun and unique artstyle. Thank you for your comments and playing our game! We hope you enjoyed it!
Incredibly charming game! Loved the implementation of the theme, particularly with the twist later on, and the humorous dialogue. I do agree with the other comments that I would have liked a bit more variability/freedom in the conclusion, but I'd imagine that was likely due to the time constraint. Amazing work, especially for your first game!
Thank you! We hope it was an enjoyable playing experience! And just wait till you see the great twist in our next game! Thank you for playing!
What a charming game. I overall liked and finish it. I don’t know if Detective Conan was an inspiration, but surely it reminded me that. Story and theme interpretation are really good, surely one of the most original of the jam, the game was easy to navigate and going forward on it, I liked this aspect. The problem is…I hoped to find myself the culprit and not being forced by story to find it and finish the game. Good job!
Thank you so much for playing! We're glad you liked our weird concept! Also, we would love to add in more player choice into our later games, but we're glad you enjoyed this one!
This starts out with a great quirky tone, as expected based on the title, and I loved it! It's not as strong from the midpoint on, unfortunately, and a lot of the little quips / humor get lost as more info is needing to be delivered. It's still funny, but I found myself missing some of the additional, early jokes.
The only other thing I would consider changing, is that I would've loved to have been given the opportunity to use the information given to narrow down and choose the culprit myself, rather than it just being told to me at the end. But, even with that, it was still a fun and interesting experience, and I love the idea!
Great work!
Thank you for playing! We're glad you enjoyed the jokes. We agree it lost a bit of the initial humor with the needed exposition, and if we are able to work on it further, we will definitely brush up the later jokes and include more agency at the end. Again, we're so glad you enjoyed our game!
Game had me laughing out loud a fair bit - especially at the beginning. Love the art - it fits very well with the theme. Would've loved to have had a bit more agency on the conclusion, but maybe that's just me. Overall, I had a great time with it :)
Hey, so glad you thought it was funny! And our artist is extremely happy you loved the art. We agree, if we had more time we would have given the option to choose the conclusion, so possibly if a remake happens we will include that. Thank you so much for playing!
Incredibly funny mystery story that comes together in a pretty satisfying way. I love to see a baby threaten to beat someone up.
OMG thanks so much! haha i love your enthusiasm for the game! Glad you enjoyed the story <3
fun game! very funny dialogue (literally lol'd several times) and nice art. second main character (trying to avoid spoilers here) is soo cute haha
Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, the second main character is a cutie ;)
The artstyle is somehow endearing. Funny dialogue! I like the story a lot.
Thank you so much! haha Yeahhh we thought the art style matched the story well. Glad you enjoyed our story. It was a blast making it
The story for this games is really interesting, makes me emotional, and laugh at some of dialogue. The narration for your games is pretty good. Recommended for someone need a story rich games. Pretty nice.
Thank you so much for playing! We really put our all and heart into this. Yeah, since this was our first game, we didn't want to bite off too more than we could chew, so we stuck with a story driven game to get the feel of putting a game together. Next game we will focus all on mechanics. We learned so much, and can't wait to start on the next game!
It was the dialogue for me. I laughed and cried. Next, can we have a mystery in the woods? luuuvvv
ikr! I cried too when going over the final read of it. Good idea for a mystery in the woods, I'll talk to my supervisor about it! haha <3 Maybe we could make a funny horror game in the woods? who knows!
also love that it's completely hand-drawn!!! i see that a lot of work was put into this game. with more experience with game mechanics and making games in general, i feel like Honk Honk! Studios will go far. Definitely the best game in the jam, Indie Game Makin Contest: Rebirth. it has a lot of heart and character <3
Thanks, Holly spent a lot of time on the art, and I'm glad you appreciate it! Yeah, since this was our first game, we didn't want to bite off too more than we could chew, so we stuck with a story driven game to get the feel of putting a game together. Next game we will focus all on mechanics...and maybe a little story of course. ;P
LOVE the story!! keep it up guys
Thank you! We really wanted to go with a unique story -- something to set us apart since we didn't go crazy with game mechanics since it is our first game. We put a lot of heart and soul into this game, and I'm glad you liked it!
really funny story rich game!! you really have to think to do the quests. love to see more from this new studio
Thanks for playing! Yeah we wanted you to explore the train more and talk to the quests so there wasn't much drive to do the quests.
What an incredible game! Fun, interesting, and well-done. Love the music and unique story line. Wonderful ending. Looking forward to the next game!
Thank you! Blake was up for hours trying to figure out the perfect score for the game. Glad you liked the music! Yeah the ending is...something haha <3
We are already thinking up the next game. We had so much fun creating this one that we can't wait to start on the next one!
CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS YALL'S FIRST GAME!!!! It's clever, funny, and such a tear-jerker. The art is so unique and complements the story really well. Can't wait to see what yall put out next
Thank you so much for playing! We loved putting this game together and hope that it shows! We learned so much! Can't wait to start on the next game!
