(x/post) A Castaway sneaking game. I see what you were going for, but mechanically there's a lot of problems. I had trouble picking up items that were next to me (I almost quit until I figured out it needed to be a distance away), the invisible walls and some of the forest felt pretty bad, and the actual stealth part needs work (in most stealth games, for instance, enemies tend to have an exaggerated turning mechanic partly to help mitigate parts where they path backwards instantly and spot you. Wilson in particular seemed to cause them to jerk around which made it a poor distraction item). But I do have to give props for attempting a stealth game as they're so tricky! And I know firsthand that it's beatable, so good job on that too. I definitely feel like you're getting better through these jams (especially considering this is a quicker one).
Castaway Coconuts was a ton of fun to play. I probably played this more times than any other game in the jam. Getting shot at is very unforgiving, but for me, I really liked jumping back into it and trying again. Great graphics and creative story.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for playing!
Pros:
Cons:
Misc:
After several attempts of getting 3 goons I took a stab at using Wilson and coconuts and it went well. After two successes I was still at full health, then I threw Wilson and it fell through the world. In terms of referential humour: A++ very good. In terms of gameplay though, less good. The difficulty overall was a bit high for a jam game, especially with the guards seemingly being unable to miss, but a little patience goes a long way. Overall it's a nice game, but a few small things cause some unneeded frustration.
Thanks for trying it out!
You start the game barely being able to move, it should really be a move of 0, I assumed the game was glitched and I couldn't move. In games like dishonored enemies have conversations while the player can still move around. You could just script it to end if one is attacked, potentially.
I was having a lot of trouble picking up the ball and coconut off the ground after I threw them. And then I couldn't put up anything else, seemingly and had to restart.
I wasn't able to get very far due to the above issue, but I also worry finding the last guy would be difficult since they all more or less spread out. Maybe some kind of compass feature would be cool? I think the idea of hunting guys through the jungle is neat, though. Like Far Cry base attacking thing.
Yeah the movement at the start felt weird both ways. I had it totally stopped and it felt like a bug. Extremely slow doesnt feel a lot better. The pickup thing I mentioned in another reply but its likely caused by being too close to them. Backup a bit and it will work most likely. Just ran out of time before I could nail down the problem. And there is a compass of sorts actually. I just never got it working in the UI the way I wanted. Look straight down. The arrow points to the closest enemy.
I'm trying to think of ways to signal "This isn't a glitch, you're stopped for narrative reasons". Maybe letterboxing? Like if the game starts and then you letterbox the camera, play the audio, and then unletterbox it when you want the player to start? I think that's a signpost people recognize. Maybe. I could swear I've seen this in games but I can't think of any examples to find on youtube.
Seems familar to me as well. Either way probably a reasonable solution.
I had trouble picking the coconut back up sometimes, and it would be nice to have feedback when taking damage.
Pickup issues were a bug I never got hammered out. But I had most trouble when standing too close to them. If you back up a little it generally works.
