Nice art style, story is good. There's a unnerving feel, however, the attack being so quick and the enemy's behavior being so simple makes you feel invincible and not scared. Overall, good game.
impressive work! i absolutely loved the ambiance and unnerving-ness(?) of this game. not much going on in terms of combat, but thematically, artistically, and narratively this one really stands out amongst the rest. everything worked well together to make one cohesive and haunting experience. my only critiques were the combat not having any consequence, and the choice at the end of the game was, realistically speaking, not really a choice if you paid attention. oh and the music was also really great. overall unique and charming entry, well done guys!
p.s. im happy to know that "nothing bad ever happened again" lol
Rat guy was my favorite character.
I really enjoyed the hand drawn art style and music fit well with the different scenes. I did find the gameplay a little lacking in interest. There was no damage or consequence really.
I am not sure if it was your goal but I was getting definite nightmare vibes. I think that was my favorite part. The ambience and mood were really well done.
Thanks for your thoughts. Yeah, the lack of consequence for getting hit was a pretty huge misstep.
I really loved the artstyle and the B/W choice!
Such an awesome game! I love the hand-drawn art and the sounds and music really worked well together
Very good game for one person! All the drawings are so nice and fit with the audio and overall theme very well. My only suggestion would be adding some health bar to make the game a bit more stressful and at the same time more player engaging.
So you managed to make your hand-drawn background an sprites work well together in a quasi-3d environment, something I struggled with. Along with the parallax movement, you achieved to present a unique and atmospheric visual style. I was under the impression you had more time and energy for drawing in the beginning compared to the end (I know I had), but it was fitting well with the concept of everything becoming darker and more abstract. I liked especially when it all shifted to white on black for a level. Smooth camera movement and suble zoom-in for the cutscenes also contributed to the mood.
The writing itself was a bit chaotic for my taste, but I guess it's also part of the charm. I think using some other font would serve the scenes well, for me it was kind of standing out from the general mood.
There was no real way to lose the game aside from a certain choice, and it made it a little less gamelike, but since it's a jam game, I did not really mind.
Overall, great audio-visual experience, simple, but smooth gameplay, a fun game. Congratulations that you managed to create this in such a short timeframe, especially if it's just the two of you.
Realized I forgot to leave a comment here... this was the first game the randomizer gave me, and my first impression was "so we're skipping right to the winner candidates, are we?" Make of that what you will.
As a bit of feedback, after the first two enemies I realized I could just jump over their heads, and that's how I got past most of the rest of them. Dunno if that's even a problem really, I do like a game that offers a nonlethal playthrough :] But worth mentioning, at least.
Wow, good game. Clocked in around 19 minutes give or take. Pretty lengthy for a game jam game imho. I don't know what you could have cut though since it was a well thought out story with a beginning, middle, and end. Would have been longer with mid bosses and since there isn't much fight mechanics, probably wouldn't have been worth it. The only thing I can think of is maybe emphasizing the last hit on the boss. Make it step back, show how angry and hurt it is, make it rush forward, then maybe do the last hit in slow-mo. Voices would also have been nice. Also, the art style kinda abruptly changed at the end. Maybe too emphasis they're off to better things but could be taken as just a rushed ending. Character is very likeable. Game reminded me of Valiant Hearts. Lovely game and thanks!
Thanks! It was originally going to be much shorter but I decided to add a few filler rooms so there's time to build tension.
The whole ending part of the game was DEFINITELY rushed; The reason the end cutscene looks so different is because I didn't have the time to color and shade it. Heck, the original plan was actually to FULLY ANIMATE it. Nope!
I also understand the want for voices, reading can get tedious sometimes. Thanks for your thoughts!
Lots of detailed and hand drawn art here. The enemies were super weak imo and the gameplay was a bit repetitive, but this was more of a novel/story telling game. Great work!
I adore this game sm, from the idea to the implementation, everything is very cool. I really like how you contrast cute and scary, it's so beautiful ahhh...
A very good game, especially for a solo dev! The amount of effort was well spread and makes for an overall well balanced experience. 10/10 would hit with a book again
Very cool idea and graphics. Very impressive for a one person show in such a limited time. I do think you need to add health and find a way to make it less repetitive with all the walking!
Loved the game. The art style is really good. The enemies were giving an off vibe like something is not okay (especially the rat friend) for me While the gamplay was pretty repetetive (walk, jump and slay monsters), I can't say that I didn't enjoy hitting enemies with the book. It was pretty satisfying for me.
Good game, but mostly a walking simulator. Would be reaally good if it had player health. The art style is really good. The game gives off a don't starvish vibe.
Thanks, yeah true I really shouldnt've skimped on adding health. I didn't really prioritize the losing aspect of the game until it was too late, with even the hurt animation being done at the last second. Oh well, I'll remember for next time!
That was awesome ! I just found the intro a little to long, but everything else was golden ! The art is amazing, cute and spooky at the same time, loved the dialogs with the goblins, loved everything !
If you're curios here's my playthough of the game, I streamed it entirely ahah.

NICE JOB!
Good game, interesting idea, just don’t like that you can’t die from these monsters and this makes it more boring
Thanks, yeah I had plans to add health but I decided not to because of how little time I had by the end. In reality it was a really necessary mechanic and I should've prioritized it early on, I'll keep this in mind for the future.
Nicely done. Loved the art. There's the potential for a lot of lore and background.
