Very cool idea for a game! Flying around in the beautiful environment was very relaxing, and the ambient music complemented it nicely. The control scheme for flying seems pretty unique and I love the bird-eye color wheel filter as a “natural” way of doing something that tends to be a scanner or radar in most games.
Unfortunately, on my Steam Deck I couldn’t get the game to recognize inputs from either the builtin controller or a Pro Controller to use the optimal control scheme, so I had a bit of trouble getting the hang of flying around with mouse+WASD. Even still, after a bit of practice it was fun, and the relaxed pace of the game meant I didn’t feel too frustrated by it.
When I first started, it took me a while to figure out where the bird I was supposed to talk to actually was - maybe that’s just me, but it might have been nice to have an arrow or hint overlay showing me where to go just to start. That said, I didn’t mind exploring the environment a bit since it’s so nice looking.
Congrats on the great entry!
So i'll say that i haven't finished this entirely, but i've taken at least one part to the rook - and i'm thoroughly surprised and loving the way this feels controls wise! It's a bit difficult to understand how this works starting out and there *is* some awkwardness (that could easily be ironed out in a non-jam release) but I feel like the thing that sets this entry apart from others is how good it feels to just control the character. The only thing keeping me from giving this 5 stars in the controls department is in fact the slightly unintuitive way it works - but otherwise, it just feels great to move around.
I really liked the idea of using selective color vision to find objects needed to progress, it feels like it could be used for a lot more than just picking the right object to fetch to an NPC.
Great entry!
I’ve experience the world through the eyes if the bird, and I must say it was really nice!
Flying around and observing the surroundings from up high felt great, the color vision helped a lot to highlight the objects you need to find and it fits the bird theme of your game.
That was an enjoyable experience! I really liked the setting and the graphics overall. The animations were smooth and everything fit together nicely.
I had quite a difficult time with the flying controls at first. I couldn't (don't?) understand why take off was a different button than flap. It was pretty counter-intuitive in that way. It was also really challenging to take off or land in a controlled manner; some kind of hover mode would have been nice so I didn't have to crash into the control panel at speed with great precision
Once in the air and soaring though, the flight felt _good_. I wanted to do some aerial acrobatics, like fly through some rings or something. That would have been a cool addition. Overall the aesthetic was super relaxing, like Bee Simulator or something.
The dialogue and story were nice, though I wish the typing effect could be skipped wish a button press. I'm impatient and a fast reader so I've kind of learned to expect that from a dialogue system.
As far as the main objective of the game, it mostly worked well. It was a bit of a frustrating trial and error figuring out what to do next sometimes, like when I first started and didn't notice the intended first piece next to the rook, bringing him useless garbage instead. I also had quite a hard time figuring out the green section since from the colors I had done I guessed green might be next but absolutely couldn't find any and assumed that green was not a color for a while. It worked out in the end though and after green it was pretty smooth sailing.
The color wheel mechanic was quite cool, especially the part where the color of the water altered the color of the part you're looking for, that was a very clever idea! Great job overall in making such a polished feeling game in a week. :)
Thanks!
The same button you use to take off also works as brake and you can use that to hover. I guess you didn’t try to brake then. That is actually the best animation of the whole game.
Also in dialogues pressing (X) (or [E]) during typing makes the sentence appear fully instantly, exactly like every other game. Odd it didn’t work for you.
But thanks for playing!
The bird vision was a neat way to have a really cool visual effect that was relevant to the gameplay too. The movement was neat, though a little clunky. Having A be both launch and flap might have made more sense. I did appreciate the controller support though.
Overall it was chill and I enjoyed flying around and exploring, but it got tiring eventually.
Oh, and when you pause it only pauses you, the rest of the birds keep flying around :) Also, it would have been nice if Start on the controller also opened the menu.
Definitely a unique concept, I love the idea of filtering for certain colors. I found the controls a little janky and I wish I didn't have to press A every time I wanted to go up. It was a bit confusing that B makes you take off, but also makes you brake. I couldn't find the blue piece the rook mentioned and eventually I gave up looking. There is a lot of potential here tho, keep working at it!
Very interesting game. I enjoyed being a bird. Having an actively wing-action was a good one. I just had a hard time with Keyboard and Mouse. With controller the controls worked much better. Good Job!
I'm afraid the pacing kills it for me. After half an hour, I'd only found one piece, and didn't see myself getting any closer to finding a second. There are some really neat ideas here, though: the way the bird controls is cool - I just wish the WASD controls weren't so jerky. And the colour wheel vision is a really neat idea.
WASD contorl is a bit less than optimal because the limited time I had to calibrate controls I had to split between keyboard and controller. Controller is <italian chef hand gesture> btw, try that out
I love, love, love this. A touch of polish, and this could absolutely be a game I waste a lot of time in, just because it feels and looks nice.
The only thing I’d say I want is a hair more direction with what to look for. After the first piece, it just says “find more pieces”, but I went around looking for a red piece for a long time and couldn’t find anything.
Overall, this is likely a game I’ll come back to for a quiet moment.
Well done!
It was annoying at first as I was trying to figure out the controls on how to fly, but they were pretty smooth after figuring them out. In such flying games, I tend to nose dive just to see if I get this special gliding/acceleration feeling.
I had limited time when deciding to play this, but I lost track of time while flying around. Sadly I couldn't get to find all the parts but I will be playing it again after I go through all the other submissions.
Very good work, if you plan on continuing it, I hope it becomes the next Stray but this time with a Parrot!
Thanks! I actually wrote a guide on where to find each of the parts, check that out if you get lost
I love the flying in this game! It's so enjoyable and relaxing to float around, and I didn't find it too particularly hard to control, although the camera did do some weird shenanigans from time to time.
I would've loved if falling allowed the birb to gain speed. I find myself diving straight down constantly thinking that I could just swoop down towards the rook.
It does gain speed! The thing is you are so small compared to the scenario you can’t really feel the speed gain (the bird would feel in the air pressure in the wings, naturally).
I thought about adding some visual wind trails in the tips of the wings to help visualize that, but was rushing with time and put that aside.
I had some issues getting used to the camera having a mind of its own when flying and being hard to control. And parts have to be found in specific order which was confusing at first. Regardless, gathering them one by one was satisfying, and the color wheel is a pretty unique mechanic and made finding parts even more fun!
*** I HAVE ADDED SPOILERS TO THE GAME PAGE FOR ANYONE WHO CAN’T FIND THE PARTS ***
The game was fun! I had a hard time finding the parts but flying around and listening to the music was calming.
