The combat in this is very satisfying and I love how each enemy type is unique but still makes sense in the context of chess! The story and art are great too :)

One minor critique is that I think it would be good if there were a small period of invincibility after using en passant, as I often found that using it would lead me to lose a life

Truly grandmaster worthy! Love the story and the action-packed thrill of the game. Did find the bishops attacks and the king's massive hitbox of a sword to be tough. Excellent work!

Holy hell, new chess game just dropped! This is great and very satisfying, nice job.

Loved the game! hitbox on the knights and particularly the kings sword were harsh, got hit from a full player length away from the sword. Music was really great fit the atmosphere of the final battle perfectly! LOVED THE FINAL LEVEL felt great after the previous fight

The En passant move double damage helped, but I feel like I didn't end up using it very much, except in the king battle.

LOVED IT

EPIC

Tight gameplay overall, and an interesting spin on chess. That being said, it is WAY too difficult, and the hitboxes, especially on the king's sword, are too big and do not match the visuals. The UI is too big and often obstructs gameplay. Also only the first 2 cutscenes played.

Thanks for the feedback. We'll be updating the game after the jam to address everyone's criticisms. (Also, you didn't miss any cutscenes - the third cutscene is after the king fight.)

Really fun to play! Found the rooks hid behind the UI sometimes and it made them very tricky to hit, but other then that it was great. The little cutscenes were tons of fun and the victory lap at the end is always a nice bonus

Haaahah! This is really good! I like how you were able to adapt the different chess pieces into this genre - the way the knights thud as they jump the way the bishops zip in from across the board. It's very good. Once I internalized that "en passant" really wanted me to *pass* the enemies and not go through them, I started doing much better.

I love the little profile picture of our rambo pawn.

The victory lap ending level is great, too. It's always fun when there's a surprise final step at the end.

Really fun game!! I love how you interpreted classic chess mechanics and made them work with this kind of game. The knights are absolutely terrifying, btw

Holy hell! So cool to see another chess game in this jam. The art style and tone really reminded me of early 2000s flash games which was fun. I like how you built on the basic gameplay loop with interesting enemies, and it was cool to see how you interpreted their movement into this non-gridded gameplay. Very fun stuff.

Love chess so this game come as really fun to play

You definitely choose the right name for it

It's more challenging than I thought

Amazing game, really fun. Loved the music and the reimagining of the chess pieces. Bishops’ dash is very tricky to dodge, and the king’s sword hitbox is a bit too big, but apart from that it was really enjoyable.

Really cool.  I enjoyed the unexpected social class commentary lol.  I do think it is very hard and the pawns need to be slowed down quite a bit.  There were moments of fun, but I personally was really frustrated.  You did a good job though, fun story, fun game.

This game mimics the feel of some of the older flash games I would play as a kid. It's both fun and engaging!

I loved the idea of the game, the difficulty is a bit high though. Great work!

I love the art. The game is very fun and quite difficult too. Nice work!

Ah, funny way to use the 'en passant' thing. Apart from the UI blocking the bottom right (especially annoying against the boss), I feel like the game could use a bit safety after being hit, also the king's sword hitbox is way too big, I kept getting hit while being very obviously away from it.
