Enjoyed this a lot! It's interesting that when you 'lose control' you might occasionally be able to save yourself by running into another pill. I do feel like some of those pills are quite awkwardly placed, i.e. can't be grabbed while running and jumping, instead you often have to stop moving and jump directly up? In any case, it's addictive and I got better at it the more I played. Great presentation all round - the sprite animation and music is top-notch!

Thank you for all of the compliments. Totally agree that the pills could and should be placed better. I actually fixed this after the jam. :)
I'm glad you appreciate also that being in the out of control state doesn't necessarily mean game over. I feel like I still may add something to give the player extremely limited control like you can press a direction but he may not go that way or if you press jump he might not do it. That way he's still not getting it but you have more chances to luck out.

Seriously though, thank you for the compliments on the sprite animation and music. :) It means a lot.

Oh was going to say I'd play yours today but it looks like I already have. Haha. Great job again on Genre Hopper. Super fun! :)

Nice game! Is it just me, or this game is always on speedrun mode lol. I feel it could be cool if when the guy runs out of pills, he cant stop jumping or running forward. He could bounce on walls when running and out of control, so the player dont get stuck. :)

Developer(+1)

It is kind of a speedrunner dream. :) That was part of the idea of it so I'm glad you picked up on it. Eventually the levels would have multiple pathways: slow and easy, steady and medium, fast and difficult. Sadly I just had time to make some quick "Does this express the mechanic?" levels.

Eventually there will be an item where you can zap the guy. That said I've considered that maybe that's the wrong order. Maybe the game starts with the zapper, introduces you to the pills, and eventually you lose the zapper as a crutch? I dunno. It's definitely the number one question right now.

Thanks for playing and liking it on Twitter/following! :) I'll try to get to yours tonight.

Yeah, I think it would be a good aproach. Needs to be tested, of course.

Developer(+1)

Definitely, but thanks, I'll give it that version a shot. :)

Sorry for my bad rating but without gamepad plugged i can not experienced the game because keybord remains inactive.

Developer(+1)

Hmm that shouldn't be the case. Since it's a bug, I'd rather you just not rate it. I tested the game with gamepad and keyboard only and with both plugged in. Which keys are you using?

Developer

Just played through it on a PC with no gamepad. Works just fine. Keyboard controls are the arrow keys plus the space bar.

If your character is bouncing around and has run out of brain juice, then you can't control him unless he picks up a pill.

You'll need to hit R to restart.

Just played again and got it to work! I've edited my rating.

Developer

Thank you. I really appreciate the second try. :) I hope you liked it!

There's not really anything that can be done if you run out of control in a place that requires jumping tp advance or reach pills.

Developer

Hmm. That's not good. Could be developer/tester bias, but I've run the levels clean with both gamepad and keyboard (collecting every pill in the level).  The platforms should be close enough to make it to the end.  The reason it's not an instant game over is because there's a slim chance you could stumble over to a pill in certain situations and I wanted to allow for that.

That said, I agree with the note. There should be an alert to press the R key or Select + Start on the gamepad to restart the level in these early stages (this does actually work in the build I think).

In later stages, the plan was to introduce the mechanic of a zapper device that you can shock the character back to behaving. You don't get a full smart meter and you need batteries that you pick up to use it, but it would get you out of a jam. This element was finished by the submission deadline, but just barely and there was no level to show it off, so I didn't update the submission.

Thank you again for the note and thanks for playing! :) I appreciate it. I'll try to think of other elegant ways to solve the issue.
