  • Pretty interesting attempt on a FPS Mario Bootleg
  • Wow that was a treat! The enemy deaths were super satisfying, the weapon choice felt awesome, and the levels were well made. Greatly enjoyed.
  • I love the idea of combining Duke Nukem and Mario! This game was really well done and made me laugh. Thanks for submitting!

Who worked on your submission?
Mostly me, with some voicelines from my buddy Zach (and tons of stock assets, full credits are in-game)

How does your submission fit the theme?
The protagonist is a knockoff parody of Mario and Duke Nukem mashed together into one character

Finally beat it, this was really fun! I liked it!!

Developer

Glad you liked it! Hopefully I didn't made it too hard, I basically don't play boomer shooters so I wasn't sure what's the right level of difficulty to aim for. ^^'

dafuq a 3d game with gamemaker, are you a gamedev semi god :D nice job ma dude!!

Developer(+1)

I've been messing around with GM's 3D functionality since the GM6.1 days so I've got like, over a decade of experience wrangling it :P

I definitely left in the default Game Maker splash screen just to make the 3D feel extra impressive though lol

Submitted(+1)

That is just as impressive to me :) I made a small project in gm but I keep returning to my beloved love2d 🤓🤓

Wow, this is really good.

sir the Actual Good Video Games Game Jam is down the hall

Right off the bat the controls/movement are real fun, enemies exploding on death is super satisfying, and i like the concept of the recharging nuclear weapon. One thing I've noticed is that your ammo doesn't reset if you fall out of the world/restart - not the biggest deal with the nuclear but I figured it was something you'd probably want to be aware of if it wasn't intentionally done like that lmao

Again, awesome stuff, very fun

Developer(+1)

Thank you! ^__^

Yeah, I'm aware that the only thing that's reset on death is health - originally it was me being lazy but I decided to keep it as part of the resource management. (I wanted to do the life system from Turok - since it shows up in the Mario games as well it would've been thematically appropriate - but ran out of time to implement it).

Incredibly satisfying to play, holy moly. The way things explode into blood, the feeling of the radiation throwing ability, it all feels very solid and I love the combining of boomer shooters and Mario to make a bootleg that combines both of them into one beast. Seriously fantastic work.

Developer(+1)

Thank you!! ^__^

I'm usually absolutely fed up with my projects when they're finally finished but this one feels promising, I feel like all FPSes are either "gritty realistic military sim" or "super bloody doom clone" and nobody's tapping into a setting that's more, y'know, FUN. And juxtaposing Mario elements with a completely different gameplay style also leads to some pretty interesting results, just a little thing like having a jump that's good enough to dodge bullets completely changes the dynamic of the game! I'm definitely gonna have to let this one cook a little bit more after the jam and see how it turns out.

Genuinely one of the most satisfying implementations of a grenade launcher I've ever seen in an fps. You should consider iterating on these weapons in future projects cause they are really, really good.

Developer(+1)

Thank you! ^__^

I spent like 2 days outta the jam budget just making/tweaking the weapons to feel right, it kinda hurt the amount of levels but since it's the main thing you're gonna be using to interact with the game I wanted to focus on getting them right. Deffo gonna be updating the visuals a bit though, I'm not happy with the explosion graphics at all and the bullets need something more to set them apart instead of all using the same literal model...

Submitted

Actually the explosion graphic is one of the things I liked most about it if you could believe it! I really liked how it portrayed how far it went while also being visually striking. It made lobbing grenades at enemies and leading shots really satisfying!

Developer(+1)

OK, I'll see what I can do... originally the explosion used a transparent texture, but depth sorting is broken so it blocked out the sprites of enemies you were blowing up (and bullets they were shooting back at you) so I had to change it into that on/off pixelated texture last second so you could actually tell what's happening. Ideally I wanna keep it being a sphere, but with a cool fire texture instead (so it actually LOOKS like an explosion)

Submitted(+1)

Ooh I can kinda see the vision with that. Very excited to see what you come up with!
