Great game. Loved pretty much everything about it. The music, the artwork and the simplistic yet challenging combat were all great. Did you make all this by yourself?

Developer

Hi! Thanks so much for playing! I'm really happy you enjoyed it.

Yes, I made the game solo (including art and music). Glad you liked the art and the music in addition to the combat!

Just out of curiosity, how far did you get? The game gets pretty tough towards the end, so I'm always impressed if someone's able to conquer the final boss!

Sorry for answering so late, I'm not really active on this site.
I played for 30-60mins before I had to go to bed, I know I got past the first boss at least. I'll probably try it out again soon now that I'm not so busy with work.

I would like to do something similar to this genre some day so it's really inspiring to me that you managed to do all this by yourself. I've been playing around with unity for a year soon so I'm starting to get a hang of programming part but the art part seems really daunting to me, as someone who's never really been into art before. Do you have any tips on how to get started? I thought your art looked really great, how long have you been practicing pixel art?

Developer

No worries for answering late, thanks for responding! I've been doing pixel art for about 1.5 years. I got started by watching youtube tutorials and other tutorials online.  HeartBeast's "let's pixel" series helped me a lot. I used that to just practice drawing random things. I also looked at this guy's patreon page a ton. He posts these fantastic 'one pager' tutorials on specific little things (for example, how to animate a 'top down attack').

The last thing I did was I would try to imitate art from games that I liked. I would frequently record myself playing games with good pixel art (i.e Hyper Light Drifter), and slow down the recordings frame-by-frame to try and see how they animated certain things (I think I would just use my iphone camera and record in slow-mo haha).

I hope that helped!

Thanks for the advice! Great idea to slow down and study games you like, I think I'll be using that method as well!

Really good game! Is there any way to avoid being hit by the green wave attack from the crystal? I also couldn't find any way to quit the game...

Developer

Hi! You can dash through the green wave attack from the crystal. As for quitting, you gotta just alt + f4 haha my bad. The game saves every room though, so you won't lose any progress.

I was playing on a Mac ;-)

This game is awesome! I spent a very long time on it.

The boss battle was fantastic! I loved how he changes attacks after his health gets low. I've tried Hyper Light Drifter before and it gives that feel with the top-down and dash ability. Well done though, I can tell a lot of work went into this game. I'd recommend finding your own twist on the style though. There's a lot that can be expanded upon and even ways you could improve upon what's already been done. Best of luck to you! And congrats on finishing a year long project!!!

Developer

Thanks so much for playing, and thanks for the kind words. I agree that there's a lot that I could have done to find a more unique style. I feel that I may have borrowed too much from existing games like Hyper Light Drifter, but I still really appreciate you playing. Were you able to finish the game by the way (just out of curiosity)?

Submitted

I wish I could! But no, I did not finish the whole game. I definitely raged trying to get the key to the left. I got the one to the right though. I feel like the dashing controls weren't always consistent. Like sometimes if I did it too quick it wouldn't register and I'd fall into the abyss.

Ahh I got you (no problem!). I definitely agree that dashing across platforms could be a little finicky.  I could have given the player a little more wiggle room when going from platform to platform (I'm pretty sure Hyper Light does this haha). Thanks so much for playing though!

Good job, it's a nice game.
