Lovely visuals and I also want to highlight the excellent writing! You have a real talent for it! I totally got into the world and characters. I was also very impressed with the central "hub world" screen which tied things together nicely.
I would have preferred things to spatially fit together because I did keep getting lost. 😅
The controls are certainly unique. In the end it somehow helped to imagine that my character was like a car, since you have to press "the gas" to go forward. 🚗 The minigame was really creative and fun, truly! It was very challengingand since I kinda felt like I was losing the whole time it would have boosted my spirit to see a "health bar" to know that I was gonna make it or not,.
Again I want to give props to the writing and overall concept, nice work!
Thanks for your notes! I think pretty much everyone is in agreement that the control scheme has got to go, but I'm glad you were able to wrap your head around it eventually.
The spatial misalignment of the rooms was intended to make the whole experience seem kind of surreal and dreamlike. Perhaps that could have been achieved some other way to make navigation a little less confusing. Something for me to think about!
Thank you for your compliments on the writing, too. That was a very important aspect of the project for me!
I like the story and concept you set up for this game and the music created for this, but I just couldn't enjoy it fully because it was kind of hard to move around and I felt I was going in circles everytime. Maybe its because I'm tired right now, but honestly, the controls were kind of a bit difficult to work with. Trying to remember which way would be up, left, right, down, and figuring out which way to go in was quite the confusion. The minigame also made it kind of hard for me to shoot the enemies and I realized too that players can easily just die in order to end the minigame. I really would of loved to see the alternate endings because I just like to see how creative it gets. If you could polish the controls a bit and rework the game a bit more, I would like to try this again.
Overall though, nice game!
Thanks for playing and for your notes! I definitely have a to-do list for after the jam evaluation period ends, and the control scheme is at the top.
Hey. I have some feedback.
Firstly, the game by itself is hard to start. ENTER did not work. Z?!?! Like seriously? I now remember Pico8 games work like that but you could have just told me on the menu "PRESS Z TO START"
Secondly, the font is unreadable. Like, I gotta read the font to understand stuff.
The movement is weird and hard to play with. ( Okay. I played the game again and now kind of understand *why* you did it like that, the minigame. However, you could have just made it so we have normal WASD then the arrow keys are used to aim and you shoot with space! Win-win! )
The map is confusing. I genuinely don't understand how the heck it works.
Lastly, you failed to tell me how to play the minigame. I only figured out that I have to kill the enemies after I "finished" the game by losing all the minigames, then looking at the game's page. Furthermore, it seems like 2 out of 3 times I reached the maximum time so I just lost and you did not even tell me why ( on the game itself )!
( I tried the minigame again now knowing that I can shoot, now are my thoughts after playing the minigame ) Please, let me know my score. stop with this "Hidden Score" bs. I want to know how close/far I was for beating the damn thing! Also, the minigame is super hard. Either increase the amount of time I have or lower the "Hidden Score" needed.
Could not beat any of the minigames the 2nd time I tried.
Thanks for your notes. Being my first game and game jam, I assumed players would read the page before jumping in, and I'm learning that isn't the case! So, something to do better next time for sure.
I agree PICO-8's font isn't the best, especially for something as text-heavy as I put together. Unfortunately, the web player doesn't allow remapping the buttons or it would have been WASD + space/enter for sure!
Always nice to see a PICO-8 game :)
Cool concept; I only got the normal ending- couldn’t master the battling!
I did find the controls a little mind bending; somehow the ‘turn/forward/back’ didn’t quite gel and I was forever trying to do ‘up/down/left/right’. I wonder if you could maintain the turning in place and use the (probably more intuitive?) top-down control scheme by having the character face the direction in the first frame, and start moving in the second. That way a light touch will turn, and a hold will walk.
Good game though :D
A bit more external playtesting probably would have revealed the difficulty of the controls. Testing it myself, I got so used to it that playing "normal" up/down/left/right became difficult lol. Thanks for playing and for your notes!
I can't do it. It's the controls, they mess with my head. Pressing down to go up if my char isn't facing the right way etc. Set that aside, I guess I'm not used to pico8 games, I couldn't figure out how to start the game without going to the options. I kept pressing enter to start. I like the visuals and the music. It was a cool style and looked like it could be fun, but the controls did me in, in the end.
The controls were a concern of mine. I needed the player to be able to turn in place, so I went back and forth between the "tank" control scheme and one in which you'd have to double tap to move in a different direction. Perhaps I chose poorly!
Thanks for the note about not being sure which button to use on the title screen, too. I had hoped my writeup on the page would avoid that frustration, but some "on-screen" guidance may have been better.
Thanks! I guess I'll always have a soft spot for the Atari 2600 era.
I love the visuals! it is kind of like minecraft 2.5d! I had some trouble figuring out what to do but after a few minutes of exploring, I was having fun! great job
Thank you!
